How to make a jumpsuit out of old jeans with your own hands?
Jeans are truly versatile. They are not only incredibly comfortable and practical, but they can also serve us for several more years after they wear out. What people have not come up with to do from old jeans! Shorts, skirts, bags, children's outfits - and that's not all, because the imagination of needlewomen knows no boundaries.
Today we are going to tell you how to turn old jeans into an original jumpsuit. Overalls are comfortable summer clothes that are loved by both adult girls and the smallest fashionistas. Our tips will help you pattern, sew and decorate your jumpsuit so that it looks like a stylish designer item.
Which pattern is better to take?
If you are an experienced seamstress, you can make a pattern yourself, as it is quite simple. For beginner needlewomen, we advise you to use any pattern you like from a sewing and sewing magazine. A huge number of such patterns can be found on the Internet, on specialized sites dedicated to needlework.
You will need to prepare the following parts:
- yokes (4 pcs);
- the lower parts of the bodice (4 pieces);
- edging of the upper cut;
- patch pockets (optional).
Sewing master class
Consider the process of sewing a jumpsuit from old jeans using the example of a child's model. If you are not confident in your own abilities, it is recommended to start mastering new techniques with children's clothes, since they will take less materials and time.
For work we need:
- jeans;
- material for the top (it can be denim or any other dense fabric);
- threads to match;
- cutting scissors;
- crayon or remnant;
- a set of pins for sewing;
- tape measure;
- sewing machine;
- decorations for decor.
Progress:
- Transfer the selected pattern to the fabric and cut out all the details.
- We sew together the details of the front part in two: we sew the yoke to the bottom. If you want to supplement the jumpsuit with patch pockets and belt loops, they need to be sewn on at this stage of the work.
- Further, according to the same principle, we sew together the details of the rear part.
- Now you need to connect the two halves of the jumpsuit. We sew them along the side seams, then we sew them on a typewriter.
- Sew a stitched cuff from a different material along the lower edge of the front cut. If the main material of the product is not jeans, it is better to make the stitch from denim.
- We sew step seams. To make the jumpsuit look more effective, try to make a stitch similar to that of jeans manufacturers.
- The next step is to sew parts of the overalls along the seam of the seat. In the front part, we leave 10 cm free.Weave the seam allowances, then smooth them at the back and smooth them at the front.
- Then we move on to the straps. We will sew them from denim. We will sew the straps to the back, and attach special fasteners to the front.
- Now, using a pre-prepared facing, we connect the parts of the front and rear parts along the side seams. We overcast the side seams, cuts of the fasteners and the bottom of the piping.
- Sew the fastener sections in front, while leaving 10 cm free in the same way as before. We smooth out the allowances.
- Next, we pin on the sewing needles those parts that were left unstitched: shoulder straps and edging. We sew them to the overalls on a sewing machine.
- We turn the facing inside out, we sweep it out by hand, then we make a finishing line on a typewriter. The jumpsuit is ready!
You can also sew an adult model following this instruction. But for her, it is better to take denim as a basis, and make additional elements from auxiliary material.
Decor
A jumpsuit made from old jeans can be decorated to your liking. If we are talking about a child's model, then unusual buttons, beads, patches, appliqués, thermal stickers and other bright decorations that children love so much can be chosen as decorative elements.
A jumpsuit for an adult girl requires a completely different decor. Those who wish to follow modern fashion trends can complement the jumpsuit with scuffs and rips.
We already talked about how to artificially age a denim thing in the article "How to make leaky jeans at home?"
Denim overalls with inserts from other materials also look good. It is better to choose a fabric that is very different in texture from the product itself, for example, delicate lace or rough leather.
Advice
- If jeans with an elastic band suddenly become short for you or your child, you can make a jumpsuit with shorts out of them. To do this, you just need to cut off the legs, sew the breast to the front upper part of the jeans and attach the straps with fasteners to it. The breast can be sewn from any fabric, and the material from the cut-off trousers can be taken on the straps.
- If you are a fan of bold decor, we can advise you to paint your denim overalls in bright colors. For this, it is not necessary to use special paints for textiles, any means that are not washed off with water and are safe for the skin, for example, markers or water-based paint, are suitable.
