How to sew a dress for pregnant women with your own hands?
Styles
Many expectant mothers are wondering about fashion for pregnant women, because not everything offered in stores is to taste or affordable.
Styles and silhouettes never go out of style. Colors, prints, elements (sleeves, skirt, bodice) of unusual cut, asymmetry, decoration or mixing of styles change periodically.
Maternity dresses can be divided into several types:
- with a high waist;
- with a low waist;
- dress bag;
- trapezoid;
- case;
- sundress.
The first type includes models:
- in the empire style;
- wrap dresses;
- combined with a detachable bodice.
- tunic dresses;
- Greek.
The last two styles are also available with a low waist.
Peculiarities
Simple models of dresses for pregnant women do not require great sewing skills, for some they do not even need a pattern, since the number of seams is minimal.
To decorate them, you can use lace, embroidery, ribbons, bows. However, these elements will help to hide errors if something happens.
Difficulties can arise with trims, draperies, tucks and patterns with many details.
Pregnancy is not a time to save money on fabric. It should be natural and pleasant to the touch, be sure to match the season.
When choosing a material, it is important to pay attention to its structure and flowability.Severely crumbling edges will complicate sewing of a dress and spoil your nerves. Well, if the fabric stretches a little, then the fit will be perfect.
If the choice falls on a fabric with a floral or any other print, then it is important to follow the direction of the pattern. For the first dress, this may seem difficult, and then it is better to choose a plain fabric or sew a fly-apart sundress.
It is recommended that you follow the tips for placing the pattern on the fabric if it comes from a magazine. This will also reduce material consumption.

Greek dress
A delicate and airy dress in the Greek style can be made very quickly according to the principle of "wrapped and tied with a belt."
- The strap or shoulder straps are cleaved with pins or brooches.
- Ribbon and belt are also fixed under the bust.
- Now it remains to distribute the folds, it is advisable to call someone for help and grind the details.
Summer sundress
There is another interesting way to quickly sew a sundress.
You will need about 4 meters of heavyweight fabric, such as jersey, and braided belts. For them, you need 2 long pieces 2.5 cm wide.
Take a mannequin and wrap the fabric:
- Put the left edge behind the right shoulder and attach it around the neck, forming a drapery, and the right edge behind the left and attach it as well. You can call a friend for help and model a dress right on yourself;
- cut each piece for the belt into 2 parts and intertwine with a pigtail.
Be sure to try on so that the drapery covers the right places and is not uncomfortable. The fit should be perfect.
Make a loop and sew in the middle of the back. Sew braids to the edges of the drapery, intertwining them together, pull them into a loop and try on again, tying the belt in front.
Simple pattern
No pattern building is required. Just take fabric, preferably knitted, Whatman paper or wallpaper and sewing accessories.
- Circle the sleeveless jersey or T-shirt on the paper. Make the length to your liking. If you wish, you can cut out the sleeve using the usual pattern. Just make sure that the sleeves match the armhole.
- Cut out your pattern, place it on the fabric folded in half, and circle with soap or chalk.
- Place marks on the waist of the garment.
- On the sides of the front of the top from the mark, stitch up 25-30 cm and pull off a little.
- Trim the neckline and armholes or make a 1.5 cm hem, then sew 2 stitches. Make a hem at the bottom.
- Sew back and front.
Cocktail
Being in a position, you should not give up parties. In this case, you should sew a bright bustier dress. The bow will make the outfit more elegant and support the chest, and the folds will stretch the figure.
The advantage of this model is the ability to use it as a skirt after childbirth.
We need 2 rectangular cuts:
- One - for a dress, length 65 cm. The width is determined - the circumference of the abdomen, multiplied by 1.4.
- The second is for a bow, 40 cm wide and a length equal to two dress widths.
The sewing process is simple:
- Fold the bow in half and sew.
- Form folds at the top of the cut for the dress.
- Grind the side cuts.
- Sew a bow.
- Make a hem at the bottom.
Sheath dress for every day
For everyday wear, a model with a floral print and a three-quarter sleeve is suitable.
- Take a classic dress pattern.
- Raise the waistline by 10-15 cm, and remove the darts.
- Make a line from the shoulder seam, on the sides of the dart and to its top point, smooth.
Let's model the side of the front separately:
- At the level of the first waistline, dilute 3-4 cm.
- Draw a smooth line along the side cut.
- Tighten the hem 2 cm.
The cuts of the side and middle parts of the shelf must match. It may be necessary to increase the length of the middle part due to dilution.
Modeling the middle part:
- Separate the yoke from the skirt, cut off along the waist line,
- Draw the belt 1.5 - 2 cm wide.
- Make the neck deeper.
- Draw a pleat on the middle part of the skirt.
Model the back according to the pattern.
Make the sleeve to the desired length and remove the elbow dart.
The seams of the sleeve should be the same, and the bottom cut line should be smooth.
Cut out the details and do not forget to add allowances for all cuts - 1 cm, and for the hem of the bottom - 3-4 cm.
Short in front long in back
The hi-lo dress is also made on a pattern basis.
- Close the bust dart and transfer it to the waist.
- Add 6 cm to flare the hem.
- In the back, lengthen the hem by 10 cm and round.
- Trim the armholes and neckline.
Draw a triangular insert on a separate sheet of paper, equal to AB length and 30 cm wide. Round the hem.
Cut open
Uncover the following parts:
- 2 children front;
- 2 children back;
- 1 children triangular insert;
- piping of the armhole and neckline, which should be duplicated with thermal fabric.
Don't forget about seam allowances.
