DIY T-shirt dress
Many girls love exclusive outfits, but if you can't afford to order them from clothing designers, then you can show your imagination and sew an attractive and original dress from old T-shirts yourself. No special skills are needed, but only desire and a few old products.
Required materials and tools
The main material for creating a dress is a T-shirt. Better to give preference to cotton. Do not forget that worn-out things do not lend themselves to alteration.
A great solution would be a new T-shirt, but which simply does not fit your size, because most of the master classes tell you how to create a beautiful dress in size from a large T-shirt.
Before work, you should choose the style of the dress and decor, and then roughly estimate or you will have enough material to create a particular dress. Some dress styles will require two T-shirts, or more. They should be harmoniously combined in texture and color scheme.
As a decoration, you can purchase buttons, rhinestones, braid or thermoapplication. If you know how to draw, then you can draw an original pattern, print, or just use a stencil.
Required tools:
- Sewing machine. Although there are master classes in which you can create a dress from a T-shirt without using sewing.
- Cutting scissors or regular long-blade scissors.
- Needles and threads.
- Pins.
- Decorative items for decoration, if needed.
How to quickly do it?
In just a few minutes, you can create a stunning dress from a large T-shirt. You should have a T-shirt at hand, two sizes larger than yours, a centimeter for measuring your shapes, scissors and a sewing machine.
The manufacturing process will include several stages:
- The hips should be measured. The resulting figure must be divided by two.
- Now you can start working with the T-shirt. It should be folded in half, measure half of the hip circumference from the center and, given this size, draw a thin outline of the future dress. But do not forget to leave another two centimeters along the contour for seams and allowances.
- Next, the T-shirt needs to be cut into separate pieces. Cut off the sleeves, the upper part with the neckline. They will no longer be needed. The remaining material should be cut into two parts - the upper thin strip and the lower wide part.
- We sew thin strips on the sides so that a short top appears. We also sew the lower part on the sides using a zigzag seam. The result is a skirt.
- It remains to sew the top and bottom together, and a beautiful dress with a fitted cut is ready!
You can use more than just your old T-shirts to create a summer dress. It is very simple and easy to create an attractive model from a men's T-shirt:
- Usually, these models are wide enough, so first you need to reduce the width of the sleeves. You should measure your sleeve parameters, mark them on the fabric and cut off the excess.
- The edges must be carefully necked so that the fabric does not unravel when worn. The sides of the future dress can be sewn on a typewriter using an overlock seam.
- After that, the sleeves should be sewn along the outlined contours.
- The shirt must be turned inside out. An elastic band should be sewn onto the waistline, initially measuring your waist size. The elastic can be replaced with a strap or wide belt.
How to sew?
You can make a luxurious dress for the hot season yourself from an ordinary T-shirt and a small piece of fabric. The manufacturing process does not take much time, and does not require being a professional in this matter.
First you need to think about where the joint between the T-shirt and the fabric will be. You can create it on the waistline, hips or under the bust. The last two are the best options. The seam at the waist is only suitable for slender beauties with a thin waist.
The process of sewing a dress from a T-shirt and fabric includes the following stages:
- You need to take a square-shaped fabric. A circle should be cut in the center, the radius of which should correspond to the circumference of your hips. To get an even circle, the fabric must be folded in half twice.
- The technology of action is very similar to the one used at school when they made snowflakes out of paper. In the corner, which is the middle, draw a semicircular line. It will be about a quarter of your hip size. Next, carefully cut it out.
- The fabric needs to be sewn on to the bottom of the T-shirt if you want to create a connecting seam at hip level. If you want the seam to be under the bust, then you should shorten the T-shirt, and then sew on the fabric.
- All fabric seams should be overlocked.
- If you want to create an elegant version, then you can twist the corners of the fabric a little, as a result, the bottom of the dress will have a "sun" or "half sun" shape.
You can create an attractive dress from a T-shirt and a skirt. This outfit will suit girls with curvaceous forms, as it will not be too short.
The manufacturing process includes the following steps:
- The T-shirt should be smoothed well. Transfer your measurements to it (chest, waist and hips) and cut off excess material along the contour. It should be borne in mind that the T-shirt should be shortened approximately slightly below the waistline. When the size of the top is ready, you can move on to the bottom.
- You should take your skirt and carefully rip off the belt as you will no longer need it. If left in place, an ugly fold will form later.
- The place where the skirt and the top of the T-shirt are sewn can later be covered using an ordinary belt or a thin strip of fabric. The new belt should not create a scar on the tissue.
Similarly, you can create a dress from two T-shirts. The short T-shirt should be sewn with a strip from top to bottom from another T-shirt, but it must be the same color. The stitching line will be located under the bust. If you use a long model, then the products should be sewn along the hips.

We sew for girls
If you have a beautiful but large T-shirt, you can easily sew an original and amazing dress for your daughter. In a new outfit, she will definitely feel like a real princess.
Main steps:
- You need to take a large T-shirt and lay it out neatly on a flat surface.
- On top, you should place your daughter's dress, which is now suitable for her in size. The hem of the dress and the bottom of the T-shirt should be leveled. You need to be careful in measuring, because at this stage you can ruin everything. You should leave a few centimeters of fabric in reserve, which will later go to seams and allowances.
- Next, you need to cut a T-shirt along the contour of the dress. This should be done slowly, since two layers of fabric are cut out at once. It is worth starting with the A-shapes, cut out the armholes. When cutting out the top, do not forget that the future dress should have a collar.
- This will create two identical pieces of fabric. Their edges need to be processed with a zigzag seam, and then sewn on a typewriter.
- Cut out two rectangular pieces from the remnants of the T-shirt. They should be no more than 5 centimeters wide, and the length should be equal to the armhole for the future sleeve. These rectangles should be folded, ironed and carefully trimmed to the armhole.
- From the edge of the dress, you need to retreat only 5 millimeters. The fabric needs to be gathered and covered with seams, just like you did with the armhole for the sleeves.
- An unusual collar can become a decoration of the product. The braided version looks original and stylish. To create it, you need to cut out several strips of fabric and braid a pigtail. It should not be tight so that the child can stick his head.
- The pigtail should be sewn to the neck of the outfit. The dress is ready!
