Dress pattern with a bat sleeve and sewing technology
The 80s gave us an unusual version of the sleeves called the bat, applicable to any style of dress. These dresses are very popular because they are easy to sew, suitable for any situation, correct the figure and give freedom.
Fitting patterns to fit
The pattern of the dress with a bat sleeve resembles a rectangle to which a sleeve has been added. And the most important thing is that the sleeve does not need to be cut out separately and time wasted on stitching, although there are exceptions here.
You can sew a dress without a pattern, for example, by circling an old jacket, or you can model it yourself or find it in fashion magazines.
One of the ways is presented in the video.
In any case, without taking into account your parameters and knowledge of some of the intricacies of a beautiful outfit, it will not work.
- As a basis, you can take the pattern of the blouse you like and lengthen it to the desired size.
- On the existing dress pattern, you can also adjust the skirt length and sleeve size, as well as the neckline.
- Be sure to double-check the sleeve length and thigh width. It is calculated using the formula 1/4 thigh girth plus 1 cm for a free fit.
- Decide on a long cuff. Usually it is 13-17 cm. The length of the cuff is measured from the lower edge of the sleeve, a parallel line is drawn and the excess is cut off. Double cuffs are modeled separately.
- The back and front of the bat model are cut out using the same pattern.
- The length of the dress depends on the length of the fabric and is equal to two lengths of the product with an increase of 20 cm.
- Do not be lazy to decorate the acquired segment.
Choice of fabric
For sewing a dress, a bat is used any, but not very thick fabric. Heavy fabric heavily makes the silhouette heavier and it is impossible to achieve beautiful flowing folds, therefore soft, slightly elastic and well-draped dress fabrics are predominantly chosen.
Sheath dress
Let's look at an example of sewing a dress with a one-piece sleeve without using a pattern.
Cutting and sewing
- Fold the fabric in half, facing inward.
- Do the same with the blouse and line up the folds.
- Draw the outlines with chalk.
- Having measured the circumference of the chest, waist and hips, cut out the back, adding allowances for the seams.
- Circle the resulting back detail on a piece of fabric and cut out in front, deepening the neckline.
Make a belt loop from the remaining fabric. Cut out the strip, then stitch and turn it inside out.
Fold the front and back together with the wrong side up. Place belt loops on the sides of the waist and secure with pins. Sew the details.
Edging
- Cut out the piping of the neckline from the non-woven fabric and fabric, transferring the lines of the neckline of the back and front to the tracing paper.
- Sew the facing details and overcast the outer edge.
- Pin the piping to the neckline and sew on a typewriter.
- Press on, then hem with your hands.
Tunic dress
To build a pattern for a tunic dress, you need to take measurements:
- girth of the chest and hips;
- front length to waist and length from waist;
- side height.
The neckline on the pattern is wide. You can model it to your liking, even make it asymmetrical.
Short sleeve
It is not necessary to hide beautiful handles under the long sleeves. For a warm season, you can sew a dress with a short batwing sleeve.
The model of this dress has no darts, so the material should be dense and elastic to fit the body beautifully.
For sizes 44-46, you will need about 2.5 m of fabric.
The top of the dress is modeled to suit all breast sizes. And with the long one you can experiment.
The layout of the pattern on the fabric requires an additional seam on the back, which you can finish with a cut.
The sewing principle is simple. Stitch side seams as well as shoulder seams, overcast if necessary. The neckline is finished with facing, and the bottom of the dress is hemmed.
Pattern for a dress with a cut-off sleeve
The bat dress with a cut-off sleeve made of contrasting fabric in texture and color looks original.
The pattern consists of one front piece, two back pieces and two pieces for each sleeve. One-piece neck trim is also required.
- Redraw the pattern taking into account the seam allowances.
- Sew the back details, then darts.
- Sew the front and back together.
- Sew on the piping.
- Connect the elbows to the front and sew in the sleeves.
- Make a hem at the bottom.
Dress pattern bat with boat neckline
In this outfit, the skirt is straight and the sleeve is cuffed. Details are laid out on the fabric "jack".
Low-waist dress pattern
Taking the previous pattern as a basis, you can model a dress with a low waist and short bat sleeves.
The red dotted line indicates the cut-off line of the sleeve. The skirt is straight here. Its width is equal to the volume of the hips.
Better to cut in two steps. First fold the fabric and cut out the bodice, then fold the fabric to the width of the skirt and cut it out.
Keep a stock of dress patterns with a bat sleeve. They will be useful to you more than once.
