Denim items are so firmly settled in our wardrobes that it is difficult to imagine modern life without these comfortable everyday clothes. One of the main advantages of denim is that this material is very wearable. If you follow the simple rules of care, then denim does not lose its original appearance for many years.

This is why denim clothing is reworked so often. After all, if the thing no longer suits you in size or has time to get bored, but at the same time is in excellent condition, the most correct decision would be to give it a new life, turning it into something else.

In today's article, we'll show you how to update your old jeans by turning them into a cute, stylish sundress.

Which pattern is better to take?

The choice of a pattern for sewing a sundress from old jeans will depend on who the new thing is for. If you are planning to sew a sundress for a child, then you can take one of the dresses from the wardrobe of your little fashionista as a sample.

The main thing is to choose a thing in which the girl is comfortable and that fits her in size.

With an adult sundress, the situation is somewhat different. In this case, the pattern will have to be done independently. For beginner needlewomen it is better to choose the simplest option, consisting of three or four parts, for example, a sundress of the "apron" type.

You can find a suitable pattern in craft magazines and books or on specialized sites. Also circle the existing apron.

So, the old jeans are ready for rework, the pattern is selected and done.

Now we need to prepare tools and materials that will be useful to us in our work:

  • bright fabric for decoration and decor (you can use simple chintz);
  • fasteners (buttons or buttons);
  • threads;
  • sewing ripper;
  • crayon, remnant, or washable marker;
  • cutting scissors;
  • set of safety pins;
  • sewing machine;
  • iron;
  • decorations (optional).
  • The first step is to cut the jeans. First, cut the top off at about mid-thigh level. Then cut each leg along the center (but only in the front).
  • You should have two long canvases that need to be joined together and stitched. This will be the middle of the front of the piece. Press seam allowances in one direction from the right side. To better fix them, you can sew a line on a typewriter using matching threads.
  • Let's move on to designing the bib. In the upper part of the canvases we draw sleeve armholes and cut off the excess material according to the marking. Sections can be finished with a tape cut from a contrasting fabric. The same fabric will be used to make a frill at the hem and decorative elements.
  • You can buy a binding ready-made, or you can cut it yourself from any material you like. To sew a tape on one cut, cut a strip of fabric to the appropriate length. The width of the binding should be twice that of the finished edging (remember to take into account the seam allowances).
  • Sew the edges of the cuts on the back of the garment with a single stitch. Take the tape and press the seam allowances, fold the edges of the strip towards the center. Fold the tape in half widthwise and iron well. Then unfold the binding and attach one side to the edge of the cut. Next, the part should be stitched, leaving a couple of centimeters free to the fold line. Unscrew the strip to the right side and secure with pins. Use a typewriter to stitch along the edge. Such a facing can be made for all cuts, and a frill from the same fabric can be put on the bottom.
  • At the final stage, the finished sundress needs to be decorated to your liking. To do this, you can use all the tools and materials available to you: embroidery, applique, painting on fabric, rhinestones, beads, etc.

Sundress for girls

Sewing a children's sundress requires less time and effort, so we advise inexperienced needlewomen to start with models for girls.

Take a dress that is suitable for the silhouette as a sample, and transfer its contours to the fabric, taking into account the allowances. In addition, it is assumed that a denim sundress is worn with T-shirts and turtlenecks, so it should be somewhat looser than a regular dress.

When we transfer our "pattern" to the fabric, we should have two parts - front and back. This will be the body of a sundress, which must be supplemented with straps and a patch pocket.

We sew the straps from two rectangular pieces of fabric: from the seamy side, fold them in half, then sew, turn out and sew again. We also cut out the pocket from the remaining material. Along the edges, you can process it with a decorative stitch of bright threads and put the same stitch in the center of the straps.

Sew on the straps, supplement them with two rows of buttons so that you can adjust the length of the sundress. We decorate a sundress in any way you like, for example, you can decorate it with a fabric applique depicting your child's favorite cartoon character.

Advice

  • If you are not satisfied with the original color of the material, you can change it at home. For example, you can make the color of old, worn jeans more intense with special fabric dyes. And if you want to sew a dress with a fashionable worn effect, treat the fabric with a chlorine-based bleach.
  • If you want to add patch pockets to your garment, you don't have to cut them yourself. Just open the back pockets of jeans - decorated with a factory seam, they will look very stylish, even on a children's sarafan.
