How to make shorts from trousers?
With a slight movement of your hand ... Well, not in one movement, but in a very simple way, your favorite, but already fed up trousers turn into even more beloved and, one might say, new shorts. Jeans are best suited for this, just neat (this does not mean uninteresting) shorts will come out of ordinary trousers.
Materials (edit)
To get a new thing and feel like a fashion designer, you will need:
- Pants.
- Safety pins.
- Ruler.
- Chalk (pen, felt-tip pen, bar of soap).
- Scissors.
- Iron.
- A sewing machine or just a needle.
- Threads.
- If desired, something with which you will decorate the result.
Alteration stages
- We put on trousers and decide on the length. We mark it with something drawing or just pin it with a safety pin.
- We take off the trousers, lay them out on a table or other flat surface (you can just on the floor), align the trousers along the edge, on each of them, along a ruler, draw a line marked with chalk (pen, felt-tip pen) or a pin. Compare the height by placing the legs on top of each other.
- If we want to get shorts without cuffs at the exit, then we lay 4-5 cm down from the drawn line and depict the actual cutting line. This will be our hem. If you dream of shorts with a lapel (cuff), then add from 5 to 7 cm.If you really like creativity, for example, deliberately frayed edges, then 1-1.5 cm will be enough for you.
- The worst thing in this process is cutting along the bottom line. To make the cut line straight, you need to take into account the structure of the fabric of the former trousers or future shorts, as you like. Jeans are dense but loose, so it is better to cut them in one layer. Lighter fabrics can be cut in two layers, but then it is better to chop the pant leg along the cut line with pins so that the material does not move.
- Repeat one more time for the second leg.
- We take out the pins.
- You can try it on to make sure everything is in order. At the same time, the shorts should be longer than intended. Either the hem length, or the cuff length, or the fringe length. If it’s scary, don’t try it on, it’s already cut off anyway.
Edging options
Without processing
If for some reason you just need a raw edge, then congratulations - the shorts are ready. You can decorate them (see options below), you can do without it.
With fringe
If you like torn edges, then you can proceed to the actual "tatting". Can be machine washed, the edges will fray. Wash it again if it is not tousled properly. You can unwind the threads by hand with a large needle along the longitudinal row a couple of centimeters in height. Everything, you can put on a completely new thing. Or decorate it first.
Hemmed hem
If you want a neatly hemmed edge, then:
- bend the edges of each leg inward by 1 cm;
- go over the fold with a hot iron;
- bend again to the first line;
- iron it again;
- sew on the sewing machine or by hand with blind stitches.
- decorate or wear as is.
If you want a messy hemmed edge, then:
- fold the raw edge up from the front side;
- iron;
- sew each pant leg on a sewing machine or by hand;
- if you wish, you can decorate the new thing.
Lapel
If you feel strong enough, you can swing at the cuffs (cuffs) from the remaining parts of the trousers, or even at the cuffs from another (contrasting, checkered, floral) fabric.
Keep in mind that you cannot just sew the lapel to the shorts themselves, since the cut of the trousers is most often tapered, because the knee circumference is still less than the thigh circumference.
Therefore, the steps will be as follows:
- if you have trousers of a straight cut or widening from the knee, then take the remaining piece of trousers, find the place where its circumference coincides with the cutoff circumference on the shorts, cut the ring to the desired cuff height, do not forget about the seam and hem allowances (1-1.5 cm);
- if the pants taper down, use a different fabric for the cuff.
- if you are using a different fabric (note that the direction of the share thread should be located like your former trousers), then simply cut a tapered strip equal to the circumference of the cut from one long edge and 1-1.5 cm more from the other, the planned height cuffs with 1 cm seam allowances and sew it into a ring, machine the edges of the seam by machine or manually with an overlock stitch;
- baste the fabric ring to the leg, inserting it inside the wrong side to the wrong side;
- sew on the machine or by hand, leaving 1-1.5 cm allowances;
- iron the seams, directing them up to the belt;
- now you need to turn out the lapel and iron it with an iron, the seam will be located inside the leg;
- Blindstitch the cuff by hand or sew on a sewing machine.
Decor
If the soul asks, you can decorate a new thing. There are many options:
- scuffs, if the shorts were made from insufficient, in your opinion, worn jeans - use pumice stone or sandpaper for this;
- holes or cuts - nail scissors will help you, and to make the holes look really stylish, you need to wipe their edges and tousle the threads;
- rhinestones, metal or metal-like thorns - easy to glue, but can fall off during washing;
- lace (you can sew on the bottom, can be sewn over, you can sew on the sides, having previously cut out triangles in them, you can cut a hole and sew on the lace from the inside) - a very feminine and stylish option;
- buttons, chains, buttons - just sew them on.
Wear it with pleasure!
