How to make a skirt out of jeans with your own hands?
Jeans are incredibly comfortable and practical thing. High-quality jeans can last for years, but even with old, worn pants, sometimes you really don't want to stay. It is especially offensive if the presentation of the jeans is spoiled by a single hole in the knee or an indelible stain.
However, you don't have to throw out your favorite jeans if you can no longer wear them. A great way to give a second life to old things is to turn them into new ones. We suggest that you sew a stylish denim skirt from pants you no longer need. Read about how to do it yourself in our today's article.
Short denim skirt
There are dozens of varieties of denim skirts - short and long, tight and fluffy. Each of the models is sewn in different ways, taking into account the peculiarities of the style. The simplest option, which even an inexperienced seamstress can easily handle, is a mini-skirt.
To make a short skirt from old jeans, you will need the following materials and supplies:
- sewing ripper;
- crayon or remnant;
- safety pins;
- threads;
- cutting scissors;
- ruler or tailor's meter;
- sewing machine.
The first thing to do is decide on the length of the skirt. The ideal length for a short skirt can be determined by standing in front of a mirror and stretching your arms out at the seams. The line drawn from the fingertips of one hand to the other is the optimal hem length.
Armed with a ruler, draw a line on the jeans where they will be cut. Do not forget to leave 1.5-2 cm for the hem processing.
Then take a seam ripper and gently loosen the inner seams on the legs. The center seam must be ripped open all the way to the zipper.
Then overlap the two halves of the workpiece and sew a new center seam at the front and back.Fold the hem of the skirt inward and sew over the hem using a sewing machine.

Flared skirt
If you have at your disposal not skinny jeans-skinny or "pipes", but jeans with wide trousers like "pipes" or "bell-bottoms", then you can make a mid-length a-line skirt from them.
A flared skirt is sewn from the bottom of the pants, and the top can be used for other needs, for example, to make shorts out of it.
- Stage 1. First you need to take measurements - waist circumference, hip circumference and skirt length. Based on this data, you can determine at what height the jeans should be cut. Pants need to be cut not only at the top, but also at the bottom, since the old hem is probably already worn out and looks unpresentable. In the next step, all the seams on the cut-off legs should be ripped open. As a result, you should have four pieces of fabric. Iron and steam each part thoroughly.
- Stage 2. Now you can start sewing the product. The pattern is very simple: it is a trapezoidal detail. The top of the trapezoid is the waist circumference divided by four, and the bottom is the desired skirt width divided by four. The length of the sides of the trapezoid is the length of the skirt plus the hem. You need to cut such a detail from each piece of fabric.
- Step 3. Next, assemble the skirt from four trapezoidal elements. Sew together all the pieces, then place them on an elastic belt made from jeans scraps or any other material. The bottom edge is finished as usual.
Midi skirt
A mid-length straight skirt can be made from old jeans of any style. Skinny jeans are suitable for a tight-fitting pencil skirt, regular jeans for a simple straight skirt, and wide jeans for a flared model.
- To get a midi skirt, the pants will have to be cut at about knee level. Do not throw away the cut-off legs - with their help you will be able to "arrange" the skirt in width.
- After you have trimmed the jeans to the desired length, the most important step of the work follows - the unstitching of the inner seams. This must be done very carefully so as not to damage the fabric. It is best to use for these purposes a special sewing ripper, which resembles a pointed hook. Leave the side seams as they are.
- Lay the skirt blank on a flat, hard surface. Then place the rectangular piece of fabric cut from the cut-off legs between the legs. Pin it down. Observing a slight overlap, stitch the insert to the edges of the legs. Turn the skirt inside out and trim off any excess fabric.
- Then turn the garment inside out again and position it with the clasp down. Now you need to sew two trousers to each other. Pins first, then machine stitch.
- After trying on the skirt, you can start processing the bottom edge. There are several options here: fold over and stitch, overlock, or pull out a few threads from the hem, leaving a loose fringe.
Boho style
One of the most popular styles of the latest fashion seasons is boho. The name of this style comes from the word bohemian, that is, "bohemian". This is the style of creative people; it is a combination of seemingly incongruous components: gypsy motives, glamor, “grandmother's” things and elements of hippie culture.
Boho style clothes are layered skirts, colorful sundresses, vintage jewelry. Boho clothes are characterized by a slight touch of antiquity, so a skirt made of old, worn jeans will fit into it perfectly.
We suggest you not be content with denim alone, but add bright fabrics and floral designs. If you have a summer dress or dress that you have not worn for a long time, you can put it into business. Thus, from two unnecessary things you will get a new, stylish skirt, in which you pass more than one summer.
- The upper part of the skirt will be made of jeans, and the lower part of the skirt will be made of a sundress.First of all, you should cut jeans to the desired length (a few centimeters below the pockets) and cut off the bodice at the sundress. You don't need to throw away the cut pieces right away - you can use them to decorate your skirt or use them to create other things.
- From the cut-off legs, you need to cut several wide ribbons - these will be the ruffles of the skirt. You can also make ruffles from a lining or from a sundress bodice. Sew the cut ribbons from different fabrics into one long one. You will need as many long ribbons as there are ruffles you want to sew to the hem of your skirt.
- Stitch ruffles to the hem of your skirt. Be sure to trim the edges to prevent the fabric from fraying or slipping onto the threads. Sew the top and bottom of the skirt. The finished product can be decorated with flowers, patches, ribbons and frills made from scraps of fabric.
In the technique "Pechwork"
Patchwork, despite its modern name, is one of the oldest needlework techniques. Our thrifty ancestors have long been engaged in sewing from scraps of fabric - it was important for them to find a use for each piece of fabric.
If earlier, using the patchwork technique, they created household items - rugs, bedspreads, etc., today patchwork clothing and accessories are popular. To learn this technique, you should start with the simplest things, such as converting old jeans into a skirt.
The first thing to do is decide on the style of the skirt. Then take the necessary measurements and make a pattern. Its shape will depend on the selected product model.
From jeans, you will need not only the upper part, but also the trousers - they need to be cut into square or rectangular pieces of different sizes.
To make the skirt look more interesting, it is advisable to use several types of denim, so you can put several denim things into use at once. Other fabrics can be used besides denim.
- From the cut pieces, as if from a mosaic, assemble the lower part of the skirt in accordance with the pattern.
- First, the flaps need to be pinned, and then sewn on the hands or stitched on a typewriter.
- Next, you should sew the lower part of the skirt to the upper one, made of jeans. If desired, the product can be decorated with buttons, ribbons, lace and other decorative elements.
