The use of coarse calico bed linen is the case when products made of natural cotton from century to century confirm their high quality. The adherence of consumers to these products has been stable for a long time, which is fully explained by such qualities as environmental friendliness, hypoallergenicity, practicality and comfort, durability and long service life.

However, the fabrics produced are varied, and your comfort and quality of relaxation depend on the correct choice of density of the products you choose.

Advantages and disadvantages

Coarse calico is one of the many types of cotton fabric used in Russia since the 16th century. Initially, it was brought from Asia, and later they learned to produce it ourselves, in the famous textile town of Kashnema, Ivanovo district. In those days, military clothing was sewn from coarse calico, it was also used as a lining material for caftans. Later, when they learned to decorate coarse calico with patterns, it began to be used for the production of bed linen, clothes for children and women.

Its characteristic difference is a simplified way of weaving fibers - plain, in which the surfaces of the fabric on the front and back sides remain the same in structure, uniform with a matte shade.

There are four types of fabrics that differ in density and color.

  • Harsh - dense, unbleached and undyed, light. They are used for upholstering furniture from the inside and for sewing special clothing.
  • Whitewashed - slightly less dense fabrics used for the production of bedding.
  • Plain dyed fabrics, similar to bleached, but painted in different monotonous colors.They are used to produce bed linen, lining products.
  • Printed - products with color patterns throughout the entire canvas space. Fabrics are popular in bedding, clothing, and more.

For obvious reasons, the most popular and better quality printed products. When purchasing coarse calico, it is worth distinguishing between the levels of its density provided for by GOST (for linen).

  • 80 g / m² - thin coarse calico, in fact, is a chintz, but the standard classifies the fabric as coarse calico. Bedding made from this fabric is not durable and will wear out soon.
  • 110 g / m² - thin, but rather dense matter. Perfect for children's clothes and bedding accessories.
  • 125 g / m² - the product most used in the manufacture of linen for children and adolescents. Differs in durability, is excellently erased, does not fade, while acquiring sufficient softness.
  • 145 g / m² and more - fabrics of a denser consistency used in the manufacture of bedding used in hospitals, railway trains, barracks, etc.

In terms of quality indicators, coarse calico fabrics differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. For example, calico from Turkey, having good quality and rich shades, often still has up to 15% synthetic fibers in its composition, which differs from Russian fabrics. The composition of coarse calico from Pakistan includes up to 80% cotton fibers and up to 20% synthetic, it is distinguished by excellent strength and durability, while maintaining lightness and softness. The cost of such a fabric is high.

Among domestic coarse calico fabrics, we would like to mention Ivanovo fabrics and products of the Shuiskiye Chintz enterprise, which are distinguished by excellent quality, wonderful colors and budget prices.

It is important to understand that, according to technical conditions, the quality requirements for coarse calico in Pakistan, Turkey and China are lower, and viscose, acrylic, polyester, and lycra can be used as additives. Such additives significantly reduce the quality parameters of coarse calico, it becomes less strong, more rigid, less prone to electrification and deformation.

Gradually, as the industry developed, new types of coarse calico began to be produced, for example:

  • light;
  • suite;
  • comfort;
  • standard;
  • ranfors.

The clearly undeniable advantages of coarse calico include:

  • ease of use;
  • excellent hygienic properties;
  • high level of strength;
  • environmentally friendly and natural fibers;
  • long service life;
  • hypoallergenic properties;
  • ease of washing and ease of maintenance;
  • disinclination to deformations;
  • budget prices.

Disadvantages:

  • lack of elegant shine and the presence of some roughness;
  • quick burnout of dyes in inexpensive products;
  • some rigidity of certain types;
  • the appearance of pellets;
  • some species are noticeably crumpled.

These advantages contribute to a more extensive use of coarse calico, from which they produce:

  • clothes for workers, medical gowns, diapers from bleached and one-color types;
  • home textiles (curtains, curtains, tablecloths, etc.);
  • lining for overalls and overalls, as they are worn for a long time.

Coarse calico is used as a wiping and filtering material, due to its hygroscopicity and antistatic qualities.

How is it different from other materials?

These types of fabrics (satin and calico) are made from natural cotton threads and, in a sense, have similar parameters. However, satin has a number of significant differences, and the main one is the method of weaving threads.

  • Coarse calico with tactile sensations is rough, and satin has a smooth structure, it crumples a little. It is produced by the method of satin weaving, due to which the fabrics receive excellent external qualities, become silky.
  • In the manufacture of satin, silk, viscose, synthetics, mixed fibers are used.
  • Satin is also different in density - 155-160 g / cm2, it also does not shrink, does not become covered with pellets.
  • Comparing these materials, we note that satin is more expensive than coarse calico.Products made from it are similar to silk ones due to their smoothness.

Coarse calico - more practical and durable. They have their own parameters, and the most important of them are density indicators and size range. The types of finishing of canvases are also relevant.

What is the best density?

There are two types of tissue density - linear and superficial. The first is measured by the number of threads per 1 cm2, and the last - in g / m2. If the workpiece has a small number of threads, then its density will be low. The weight of the canvas is largely determined by the thickness of the threads. The parameter is subdivided into low, below average, average, above average, high and increased. Surface density is an individual indicator that is different for different types of textiles. It is influenced by a number of factors: the degree of twisting of the fibers, the level of the degree of adherence, the techniques of weaving threads.

All quality characteristics of products depend on the indicated density values. The higher these indicators are, the stronger the product is. High-quality coarse calico products have a density of 110-125 g / m², they are inexpensive, versatile and comfortable in texture. Railway enterprises and medical institutions use sets with a high density - 130-160 g / m2. For children and allergy sufferers, products of medium and low density are more comfortable, since a not very rigid canvas “breathes” better and has a delicate texture.

We recommend choosing more durable laundry for everyday use. Such products are characterized by resistance to wear and tear during washing, long-term preservation of colors under the influence of ultraviolet radiation.

According to the parameter "density", the types of canvases are distinguished:

  • sparse - 100 g / m2;
  • coarse calico "comfort" or "standard" 120 g / m2;
  • density 140 g / m2;
  • severe - 145 g / m2 and more;
  • "Luxury" - with refined threads;
  • "Ranforce" - with special treatment.

Dimensions (edit)

Coarse calico canvases are produced with a width of 80-220 cm, it depends on the types of canvases. Harsh - 90-164 cm. Bleached - 150-160 cm (for beds). More than 220 cm, used in the production of euro sets and sets for double beds. When purchasing imports, one should take into account the existing differences in the adopted standards. The Russian classification of bedding accessories by size differs from the European one both in numbers and in designations:

  • single sets - 1-bed or single;
  • 2 bedrooms - 2-bed, full or double;
  • queen - equal to the domestic "euro";
  • one and a half - 1,5-bed and extra-long single;
  • three-bedroom - king-size.

About sizes:

  • 1.5-bed accessories (now the smallest size unit), perfectly suited for single and one-and-a-half beds;
  • 2-bedroom - perfect for sofas no larger than 180x220 cm;
  • 2-bedroom "euro" - differ from the typical two-bedroom version with sheets of large dimensions 220x240 cm;
  • "Duet" (family options), where there are two duvet covers - 150x210 cm;
  • "Euro" (European standard KPB) sheets - 220x240 cm;
  • Euro-set "maxi" - with a large duvet cover - 220x240 cm.

Design

Initially, white canvases were used, rough, without patterns and colors. As the textile industry developed, coarse calico began to be dyed in different colors and patterns. This gave the products more variety and led to an expansion of the field of application. Canvases are distinguished by dyeing methods.

  • Plain colored - monochromatic canvases painted in different colors (black canvases, two-color canvases, etc.).
  • Printed - beautiful canvases with a variety of aesthetically selected patterns and colors (for the home), applied by a machine. Their field of application is extensive - from bedding and clothing to napkins and towels.

Care

Calico is an unpretentious fabric that does not require special care conditions. It is not necessary to wash it by hand; it is allowed to wash it in washing machines in different modes - 30 ° C for slightly dirty items and up to 90 ° C for very dirty items. However, the optimal temperature is considered to be about 60 ° C, since with it the laundry will certainly not fade and deform.

In some cases, coarse calico is even boiled, but the manufacturer will not be responsible for the safety of the drawing. Calico perfectly tolerates automatic drying without losing its shape. It is argued that bedding should not be ironed as the fibers will absorb sweat more and breathe more productively. However, the coarse calico is perfectly ironed both with an iron and with the help of a steaming device, losing little of its hygroscopic qualities.

It is not difficult to soften a coarse calico cloth; for this, washing is performed in a soft mode, using conditioners and subsequent steaming. In this case, it is desirable that the coarse calico be of low density. In the course of washing, you can use washing powders and conditioners, since the coarse calico is well tolerated by the effects of chemicals. And in order to preserve the color of the product (especially if it is new), it must be turned inside out, using powder for colored canvases.

Recommended modes of machine wash - "Cottons" or "Delicates". The highest temperature regime is 40 degrees. The number of revolutions is 800. The use of aggressive detergents, chlorine is contraindicated, otherwise there will be a loss of strength and color of the fabric.

Conditioners should be used (the laundry becomes softer and fresher).

A number of additional recommendations:

  • we recommend washing new things in warm water, this will eliminate paint odors and remove impregnation residues;
  • use of universal detergents is preferable;
  • set the degree of spinning to medium or minimum, since after a strong squeezing, the fabrics wrinkle and are more difficult to iron;
  • the starching process does not spoil the product;
  • shrinkage of products appears from an excessively high water temperature or excessive active spinning;
  • when shrinking, the wet canvas should be evenly stretched by the ends and carefully hung to dry;
  • for high quality fabrics, the standard allows for shrinkage of 5% in length and 2% in width.

Drying of linen is done both on ropes and by machine. We recommend drying the canvases in the fresh air. Before this, the linen must be shaken well - the fabric straightens better. Such linen is ironed better, when it is not overdried, it remains slightly damp.

If the canvas is embroidered, then it should be ironed exclusively from the inside out, otherwise you can damage your handwork. Store laundry in a ventilated cabinet.

Review overview

In its overwhelming majority, the nature of the reviews about coarse calico is positive. This is especially true for children's and adult bedding. The fabric is practical, easy to use and easy to wash. It dries relatively quickly, retains rich patterning for a long time, looks aesthetically pleasing and neat.

Good reviews are also heard in relation to Russian coarse calico products made from 100% cotton. The environmental friendliness and hypoallergenicity of coarse calico is often emphasized. Users are satisfied with the diverse design of products and their size range.
