Starching of bed linen is not a common procedure these days. Nevertheless, it has many advantages. What you need to starch things for, and how you can do it at home, will be discussed in the article.

Why is it necessary?

First of all, starching the bed linen makes it visually clean and gives it a pleasant creak, crunch and fresh aroma. Sleeping on a starched bed is doubly pleasant. However, this is not the only advantage of this procedure; it has many other advantages.

Thus, well-starched laundry significantly increases its density. Due to this, the wear resistance of the product also increases, and therefore it serves many times longer. Carrying out this procedure also allows you to give things a competitive shape, which will remain until the next wash. At the same time, the material will become more resistant to dirt, and therefore it will have to be washed significantly fewer times.

At the same time, the starched product is ironed much easier, it stops creasing too much. If the thing was white, then after starching it will return its snow-whiteness even if it has turned yellow during the entire period of operation.

How to do it manually?

To manually starch bed linen, the first step is to properly prepare the starch solution. To do this, you need directly the starch itself. To determine the amount of a component, you need to know exactly what concentration of the solution is needed. So, for a hard procedure, you will need 2 tablespoons of starch, for a medium one - 1 tablespoon, and for a soft one - 1 teaspoon.

If we talk about which starch is best suited for the procedure, it is potato starch. He shows himself best in the process of work and, plus everything, is freely available. However, if you're using corn, wheat, or rice starch, it doesn't matter. They are also suitable for starching products. All types of starch have similar properties and differ only in their degree of density when preparing solutions.

The required amount of the component is mixed with 200 milliliters of cool water and stirred so that no lumps remain in the solution. Otherwise, the mixture must be additionally filtered through a strainer or cheesecloth.

Separately, you need to boil an additional 800 milliliters of water and carefully pour the starch mixture into it. Pour it in a thin stream, while constantly stirring. In general, the mixture is almost ready. If it comes out too thick, add a little warm water to get the consistency you want. Next, the resulting solution is cooled and the procedure itself is started.

Before starching the product, you first need to wash and rinse it. To starch bed linen by hand, without the help of a washing machine, you need to pour the starch solution into a large container, place the product itself there so that it is completely wet. After that, the thing needs to be pulled out, squeezed out well and sent to dry.

Please note that it is not recommended to send starched products to dry in cold air; it is better to leave them to dry in a warm room.

In order to starch a thing correctly, it is worth considering some factors. So, if the item is made of delicate material, it needs to be placed in the mixture for just a few seconds. Openwork items take longer to starch, about 20 minutes. Bed linen, napkins and other things of this type should stay in the solution for about 15 minutes.

If you want to starch not the whole thing completely, but only a part of it, apply the prepared starch mixture to the required area, wait 20 minutes and go over this place with an iron.

How to starch in a washing machine?

To starch this or that product at home, you can also use an automatic washing machine. This is not difficult to do. The following sequence of actions must be observed: the starch is poured into the compartment intended for the liquid conditioner. After that, you need to start washing in such a mode, which is recommended for the fabric from which your bedding is made.

After completing the procedure, the drum of the washing machine will have to be cleaned. To do this, it must be thoroughly wiped from the inside with a damp cloth, and then just as thoroughly, but already dry.

No rinse aid is required during the procedure. And so that the thing after starching has a beautiful shine, you can add a little table salt to the mixture.

Before carrying out this procedure, it is worth considering that not every product allows this washing method. For example, if there is a floss embroidery on the item, the fibers will begin to shed and get tangled, which is fraught with damage to the thing. Silk and synthetic fabrics are also not recommended to be subjected to this procedure, but, for example, cotton, satin and linen can be starchy.
