The mattress topper serves as protection for the mattress, but itself is often exposed to various contamination factors. This is especially true when the covers are used for children or bedridden people. We will tell you how to quickly put in order a waterproof mattress topper, how and how to wash it.

General rules

A waterproof mattress cover periodically needs to be washed from stains, all kinds of dirt, but the specific structure of the material entails knowledge of special rules:

  • first of all, the mattress cover must be removed, if it is on an elastic band, then it will be quite simple to do this;
  • washing is performed infrequently, and so that the cover does not sit down, they do it at a water temperature of 40 degrees, not higher;
  • it is allowed to wash both manually and in an automated device on a delicate mode;
  • chlorine-containing products cannot be used for washing;
  • spinning only by hand - you cannot twist the mattress topper strongly.

Pay special attention to removing stains before washing. Let's dwell on the most common pollution.

  • To remove streaks from urine, make a saline solution with the addition of lemon juice. 1 tbsp. pour a spoonful of lemon concentrate and rub the stains. Leave it on for a while, and then remove the residue with a damp cloth.

Laundry soap and baby powder cope well with traces of urine.

  • Blood stains are removed with hydrogen peroxide. It is enough just to pour the composition onto the contaminated area.
  • The ammonia will help remove cosmetics (lipstick marks, etc.).
  • You can get rid of greasy dirt thanks to starch, salt, talcum powder or dish detergent. The stain is treated and after half an hour it is wiped with a damp cloth.
  • Gum or other sticky contamination will be removed with ice. A bag with pieces of frozen liquid is applied to the desired area - after freezing it can be easily scraped off.
  • If there are coffee or tea stains on the mattress topper, then you will deal with them by taking vinegar (table vinegar).

After removing various stains and dirt, you can take up the general wash. The mattress cover can be put in a special washing bag if you plan to use it in the machine, although this is not required.

It would not hurt to also get acquainted with the information from the manufacturer about the recommendations on how to wash the waterproof mattress topper.

Detergents

The mattress cover is washed only with special liquid compounds (you can make such a composition from grated laundry soap), it is forbidden to use powders containing chlorine compounds and aldehydes, as this can lead to damage to the material from which the cover (membrane) is sewn.

You can't even wash your waterproof mattress toppers with ordinary powder - and no bleach, conditioners, or stain removers. It is advisable to remove dirt only with folk remedies, then wash it by hand or in an automatic machine in a delicate wash mode.

If these rules are not followed, the cover may shrink, change in size, lose its appearance, the pores of the material (from the powder) may clog, which will lead to the loss of its functional features. So do not neglect the necessary recommendations.

Can the mattress topper be washed in the washing machine?

The manufacturer must give its recommendations on how to properly care for their products, but, as a rule, it is not forbidden to wash the mattress covers (including waterproof ones) in the washing machine. The main thing here is to observe a gentle regime and not to make the water temperature higher than 40 degrees.

And remember that we squeeze the cover manually, that is, we need to cancel the spinning in automatic mode. It is undesirable to wash any other things together with the cover. If you follow all the recommendations, the antibacterial layer (impregnation) of the mattress topper will withstand up to hundreds of washes.

It is also important to understand what the mattress topper is made of, for example, a wool cover is not recommended to be washed in an automatic machine, only hand washing is suitable for this type (however, we read information from the manufacturer: if there is no such prohibition, then in the most gentle version).

Be careful when washing your mattress cover with down. It is washed in the machine only if it is with a large drum (from 7 kg), otherwise the machine may be overloaded. To prevent the fluff from getting clumped, throw tennis balls or balls made of foil into the drum.

And no conditioner - this product is capable of sticking feathers and down. In general, it is better to wash down and woolen mattress covers by hand, making certain movements from side to side. Let us dwell on this process in more detail.

How to wash by hand?

For hand wash, proceed as follows:

  • collect slightly warm water (no more than 30 degrees);
  • dissolve a special liquid detergent for washing such products in water (if there are none, use liquid soap, shampoo or gel for washing woolen products) and immerse the cover;
  • move the cover from side to side and leave for about 1 hour;
  • again carry the product in the bathroom with wide movements from side to side (you can make smooth whipping movements this time);
  • drain the water;
  • take a new portion of rinse water;
  • rinse the cover several times (at least 3 times);
  • hang the mattress topper over the bathtub for dripping (use a special grate).

You do not need to rub the cover with your hands until you are exhausted, especially since before that you need to clean all the main dirt and remove stains. Even washing a waterproof mattress cover by hand should be gentle. And pay attention to the drying rules.

How to dry?

Dry the waterproof mattress cover only on the street or in a room where there is good air circulation, but not in the sun or heating appliances. If you hang the product on a radiator to dry, there is a chance of damaging the special moisture-repelling coating.

In a typewriter, the mattress topper is not automatically squeezed out (it is recommended to turn off the "spin" mode at all), you can gently remove the liquid with your hands, but it is better to spread it out in the bathroom so that the water is glass, and then place it on a horizontal surface in the fresh air for further drying (only not in sunny weather).

Remember that a wet mattress topper should not be hung on a rope. From this, it can lose its shape, it is laid out on the surface, constantly turning over and shaking slightly.

The drying process is long, but it is important to bring it to the end, otherwise the product will start to rot, it will exude an unpleasant odor - as a result, the protective layer is deformed.

The dried product is treated with a special impregnation to restore the water-repellent properties of the mattress topper. Well, the last step is to put on the mattress cover correctly so that there are no wrinkles that cause discomfort.

With proper care during washing and drying, the cover will remain in the same condition, without defects and deformations, and will last a long time.
