Ripple for short hair: what does it look like and how to do it correctly?
Hairstyles with corrugated strands always look beautiful and unusual. They do not look like regular curls, while creating additional volume and keeping their shape well. They can be made in the salon, or at home. The method is simple and effective.
What it is?
Ripple is waves that are made on the hair using a special iron. Waves can be both small and large, their size depends on the nozzle.
You can make corrugated strands on absolutely any hair length, including short ones. If you want to change the look of your hairstyle for a short while, ribbing can be the perfect way to do this.
Who is it suitable for?
For soft hair, fine corrugation is better, and with the help of a large one, you can structure and order tough, thick strands.
Ripple looks good on any shade of hair - light, dark, red, and the most exotic.
You can do corrugation on loose hair, or you can collect already curled strands in bunches, fasten them with invisible ones, and put them under a hoop.
As a rule, corrugated hair fits better into the hairstyle, especially the structure that is not stiff.
If you have a haircut with straight bangs, you can corrugate it only if you plan to remove it under the rim or put it back. Otherwise, it must be laid as usual. If the bangs are oblique, they can be laid with forceps along with the rest of the strands.
Necessary tools
In order to make the corrugation, you will need special ironing tongs. They are almost the same as those designed for straightening strands, but their nozzles are corrugated. Often these attachments are sold complete with straightening irons.
There are tongs that are protected from overheating. This means that in case of strong heating, the device will turn itself off.
The ionization function assumes the effect of negative ions on the hair, the reduction of static electricity and, as a result, the reduction of harm to the hair.
It is not difficult to use forceps, the vast majority of models are equipped with comfortable handles, excluding the possibility of accidental burns.
And also you will need:
- thermal protection agent (it is better to choose one that will not make the hair sticky, will remain invisible);
- styling mousse or foamif your hair does not keep the hairstyle without "doping" or needs an artificially created volume (in this case, you need to dry your hair with the chosen styling agent, and only then proceed to crimping).
To create a curled hairstyle, you need to follow a number of rules.
- Any electrical tool is harmful to the hair, so before you start curling, you should apply thermal protection to the strands. This can be a spray, mousse, or other product. It will help minimize the harm done.
- Hair must be dry. If you use tongs to handle wet strands, you can burn them and damage them.
- The "corrugation" hairstyle is created step by step, one strand at a time. Keep the strands clamped in one place for no more than 6-7 seconds. It is better to choose a tong with a wide "pitch" in order to catch more hair at once.
- Ripple on straight hair do immediately, but curly ones must first be straightened.
- In no case should such styling be done daily.... The maximum allowed is 1-2 times a week. And it is better to style your hair with an iron no more than once a month.
The fluffed hairstyle has a number of advantages.
- Long wear life. If the curls, wound on a curling iron, can lose their original appearance by lunchtime, especially without additional fixation, then the corrugated strands will remain in their original form until the evening.
- The hairstyle looks more voluminous, especially if the shallow nozzle is used.
- An unusual look, unlike the usual curls.
- The ability to easily create a hairstyle at home.
There are also disadvantages, and quite serious ones.
- It takes quite a long time to create such a hairstyle. The longer the strands (and the more they need to be ironed), the longer it will take.
- Thermal effect on the hair, and the need not to overexpose the iron on the strands.
How to do it right?
Styling with different wave sizes looks interesting:
- it adds volume to the hairstyle;
- makes it much more natural.
Large corrugation is the most capricious, most often it is performed on long hair, but it can also look good on an elongated bob.
The best option for short hair is the medium attachment, which produces medium-sized waves.
To get a neat hairstyle with fluted strands, you don't have to try to grab too much hair at once.
Corrugation takes a lot of patience to lay, and if done quickly, it will look sloppy and like a washcloth.
If you have coarse hair, be sure to wash it with a softening balm before styling. Then dry with a styling that tames your hair. Otherwise, you can get an "afro" on your head, which was not planned at all.
Professional methods
There is a service Boost up, which is stated as "Root volume 24 hours a day." However, in essence, the procedure is a chemistry-corrugation at the roots. As a result, a fleece forms in the root zone, which greatly spoils the hair. It is impossible to comb it due to the previously done chemical treatment. If the composition is overexposed, some of the hair falls off, breaking immediately after the procedure. And besides, growing back, Boost up looks very deplorable.
Therefore, it is better to refrain from any type of chemical treatment of hair to add volume-corrugation.
The procedure is more gentle on the hair. Ecovolume, based on the same principle of root corrugation, however, the strands in this method are fixed with corrugation stylers, after which they are treated with a special compound.
However, there is a possibility of creating a root volume using a corrugated iron (however, the effect will last a maximum of a day). The upper part of the hair must be separated from the lower and fastened with a clip or a hair clip. The lower part should be neatly, one strand at a time, corrugated only in the root zone. If the hair is very thick, you can divide it into 3 parts with horizontal parting and make a corrugation at the roots on the lower and middle parts. After that, you need to loosen and comb the upper part of the hair, making sure that the desired volume is obtained.
Important: the strands near the face in such a styling are not corrugated. Only the occipital and lateral parts of the hair. Otherwise, corrugation creases will be noticeable.
If you are planning to pull the strands into a lush knot, then you can create root volume on all hair under the top layer. In this case, even "babette" or "shell" will turn out.
At home
It is not difficult to create a hairstyle on short hair with the help of corrugation, but you need to do everything very carefully so that you do not get a "nest". That is why you need to stop in time so as not to give the hair an unnecessarily large volume.
First you need to wash, dry and comb your hair thoroughly. Next, apply a thermal protection agent. Make a side parting so that there is more hair on one side.
Where there are fewer of them, straighten the strands, and where there are more, corrugate through the strand. That is, half of the hair will have a grooved structure, half will not. Fix the hairstyle with varnish.
Styling "afro" looks very interesting, but only on condition that it suits your type of face. The structure of the hair should be rather rigid so that the "afro" does not hang, but keeps its shape. It should be done using fine corrugation, using mousse for fixing and thermal protection.
