What should be a programmer's workplace?
The programmer spends most of the working day at his workplace, so the organization of this space affects both his work activity and his health. For this reason, it is important to choose the right table and other furniture for the programmer's work, take care of the microclimate, ventilation and good lighting. Let's consider the main nuances of organizing a workplace for an IT specialist.
How to choose the right furniture?
The selection of the right furniture can significantly increase productivity and reduce the health risk of the programmer. When organizing a workplace, it is important that:
- furniture did not restrict freedom of movement in the room and at the workplace, and allowed frequent changes in body position;
- all items were placed optimally (those that are needed for work more often should be closer);
- the working posture did not cause quick fatigue;
- the furniture corresponded to anthropometric parameters and was adjustable in height.
The main furniture of the programmer's workplace is an armchair and a table. The chair should have a slightly concave surface and a slight backrest tilt back. Its height should change, and the whole structure should not interfere with the freedom of movement of the body and arms. It is desirable that the chair has armrests.
The table should have a height suitable for a particular person, and its lower part should be of such a design that it does not require tucking the legs. Glare should not appear on the surface of the table, which would interfere with the normal reading of information on the display. Optimum table dimensions are 1300 mm long and 650 mm wide and 710 mm high and at least 400 mm deep.
It is convenient if the desk has at least three drawers where you can put documents, office supplies, personal belongings.
As for the placement of the programmer's objects of labor, the monitor should be in the center of the table, the printer should be on the right, and the system unit should be on the left. The keyboard should be installed in the area where the worker's hands will be when he sits at the table. All documentation necessary for work is recommended to be stored on the left at arm's length, and temporarily unclaimed literature should be removed to the table.
Lighting
In order for the programmer to easily accomplish the tasks assigned to him, it is important that enough light falls in his place. In low light, the eyes get tired faster, the attention weakens. If the lighting is too bright, it will dazzle and provoke pain in the eyes, will cause irritability.
If the beams are incorrectly directed, glare and shadows appear in the workplace, which also interferes with normal activities.
In most cases, there is not enough natural light at the programmer's workplace, or there is none at all, so you need to choose the right sources of artificial lighting and their location. Fluorescent lamps are considered the best option, as they give a bright light, similar to daylight. In addition, they have a higher light output and a higher efficiency when compared to incandescent bulbs.
Fluorescent lamps also last much longer.
The number of luminaires is determined by the luminous flux method, taking into account the area, height and width of the room, the minimum illumination parameters and the safety factor. Having determined the luminous flux, they calculate how many lighting fixtures are required for a particular room, and then place them in two rows.
Microclimate
For comfortable work in the room where the programmer is located, there must be certain indicators of temperature and humidity. They create a microclimate that affects heat exchange with the environment, well-being and performance.
During the warm period of the year, the room where the programmer works should be + 20 ... 25 ° С (an indicator of up to + 28 ° С in the hottest months at 13 o'clock is also acceptable), in the cold - + 18 ... 21 ° С, and in transitional - + 17 ... 21 ° С. With regard to humidity, the optimal indicator is from 40% to 60%. The air movement in the room should be at a speed of less than 0.3 m / s, but for the cold period - up to 0.2 m / s, and in the summer heat - no higher than 0.5 m / s.
To organize comfortable conditions, pay attention to the heating system, ventilation, air conditioning... And it is also necessary to rationally plan the daily regimen, taking into account the time of year, so that there is an alternation of work with rest.
It's great if the programmer can go out into the green area during breaks, where there are ponds and benches.
Noise and vibration
The main source of noise and vibration for a programmer is the computer. Noise is also generated by ventilation equipment, a printer, and external sources. Excessive noise, especially if it affects the body for a long time, can reduce hearing and visual acuity, impair attention, and increase blood pressure. With prolonged strong noise, functional disorders of the nervous and cardiovascular systems are possible.
When organizing the work of the programmer, you should control the noise level in the room, comparing it with the standards for the sound pressure level. Adequate protection against noise must be taken care of even at the construction stage by making high-quality sound insulation. To reduce the impact of external noise, doors and windows should be sealed. Sound-absorbing surfaces are used indoors, for example, the ceiling is lined with fibrous-porous material.
