Sheet holders: what are they and how to use?
In the modern technological world, everything happens very quickly, so each person tries to optimize routine tasks as much as possible so that they do not take too much time. Nothing is more annoying than a sheet knotted in the corner when you're just getting comfortable in bed, or when you’re already late for work, and naughty bedding that has slipped off the mattress doesn’t want to take its place. In this article, we will discuss the tools that securely hold the bedspread and save you the trouble of making your bed regularly.
Peculiarities
There are quite a few ways to securely attach a bedding to your bed, and each is designed for different situations. To choose a suitable holder for a sheet, you first need to decide on the reason why the fabric gets confused or wrinkled.
Let's take a look at a few of the main reasons laundry can slip off the mattress.
- Movement while sleeping. If you move very actively in a dream, constantly turn over and fidget, the sheet may not only get lost somewhere on the edge of the bed, but even fall to the floor. In such a situation, a strong fixation is needed, perhaps even in two ways at once.
- Bed linen is not the right size. The sheet must be selected much larger than the mattress so that the edges can be wrapped under it. In the case when the fabric covers the sides of the mattress by only a few centimeters, it is not easy to avoid slipping.
- Bed material. The bedspreads made of synthetics, silk and satin are very slippery, so even if you turn over in a dream just a couple of times, the sheet can easily slide off. Products made from natural fibers, such as cotton and linen, have a rougher surface, moreover, they absorb moisture well and do not stick to the body.
- Mattress material. Covers on old down and wadded mattresses were made of coarse, dense fabrics that did not allow bed linen to wrinkle. Modern mattresses are made from ecological materials - they have become softer, more pleasant to the touch and comfortable to use, but at the same time, their surface has become more slippery. The sheet on these bedding is more likely to fall into the corner of the bed.
In the event that the sheet is long and wide enough, you can try to solve the problem by tucking the edges of the fabric under the mattress, instead of leaving them hanging loose. When your bedding is made from natural materials, and the reason for slipping is a new mattress, try getting a mattress topper made of rough, rough fabric: a natural bedspread will not slip.
If these methods do not help, and the sheet is still wrinkled, you need to purchase special fasteners for the sheet.
Materials (edit)
The easiest way to securely fasten a sheet is to purchase special clips from a furniture store or the Internet. There are several types of such devices: plastic clothespins with an elastic band, metal braces with an elastic band and plastic clips. Let's take a closer look at each type of mount.
- Plastic clothespins. Such an attachment is suitable only for thin fabrics, the device cannot even hold dense materials in one layer. The fasteners look like two clothespins, fastened together with an elastic band, there are four of them in total - one for each corner of the sheet. The product cannot harm thin fabrics, because the clamps have a very unusual grip - it consists of two parts: the upper part is presented in the form of a plastic loop, tapering towards the tip, and the lower part, in the form of a plate with a cap on a thin leg. To secure the sheet, you need to insert its edge between these parts and fasten them together.
- Metal clips. The device is of three types: with two fixation points, with three fixation points, as well as a product with an elastic band length adjuster. The principle of operation of such a fastener is approximately the same as that of suspenders for pants. With the help of the clamps, the sheets are very easy to pull on the mattress, it is enough just to fix the clothespins at the corners of the bedspread. Depending on the model, the elastic can stretch from 30 to 170 cm - this allows you to secure the bedding in several different ways.
- Plastic clamps on the pipe. An unusual device from China, which is quite simple to use - you need to insert a pipe under the sheet and the mattress topper, and then attach special clothespins to the top of the tube. The mechanism is suitable for all types of fabrics from which bed linen is made.
Store fasteners will perfectly help in solving the problem of a slipping sheet, but it is almost impossible to find it in the nearest store, and a purchase on the Internet will have to wait for several days, sometimes months. If you have enough patience, you can wait for the parcel, but you can also solve the problem much faster - with the help of improvised means.
How to do it yourself?
If the necessary product was not in the nearest furniture store, and you need to fix the sheet now, you can use homemade fasteners.
Consider several ways to secure the bedspread with improvised means.
- Curtain pegs or paper clips. With the help of such devices, the sheet is securely attached to the mattress topper. In order for the material to hold tightly enough, it is necessary to grab the bedspread and the mattress topper with 4-5 clothespins at each corner.If the bedding is made of fine fabrics, do not tighten the tension too much, otherwise the bedding may tear.
- Velcro. To secure the sheet with Velcro, you need to sew parts of it to the sheet and mattress. Sewing the fastener to the fabric is quite simple: it can be stitched to the bedspread on a sewing machine, and it will be more convenient to sew it to the mattress by hand. Unfortunately, Velcro does not last long - from 5 to 10 washes, nevertheless it is quite easy to replace them with new material.
- Buttonholes and buttons. A fairly simple way of attaching the sheet - for it you just need to sew a button to the mattress and an eyelet to the sheet. The buttonhole is usually made from elastic, tape, cord, or a finished piece of fabric. When there is such a convenient fastening on the mattress, the bed will not hesitate and will not have to be corrected often. Ribbons can rip quite quickly and elastic can stretch out, so it's best to use a piece of shoe lace or a processed fabric buttonhole.
- Additional bedding. You can secure the bedspread with a frill with an elastic band - you just need to put it on over the covered sheet. Such a product is sometimes sold in a set of bedding, but you can also sew it yourself from fabrics that are similar in color and material to bedding.
Some holders, such as binders and crocodiles, can damage or even tear the thin fabric of the bedspread with prolonged use, so it is best to use them only as a temporary measure rather than on a permanent basis. Nevertheless such fasteners are very convenient for disposable roll-up sheets, because they are very easy to put on and take off.
How to use?
Using store-bought plastic or metal fasteners is quite simple, you must first lay the sheet evenly on the bed, and then follow the instructions:
- open the plastic clip or metal clothespin and attach to one side of the corner;
- lift the mattress and stretch the elastic of the device under it;
- attach the second side of the fastener to the second side of the corner, at the same distance from its top;
- follow the same procedure for each corner of the cover, keeping the same tension.
In the event that the retainer has three attachment points, you must first attach one of them to the top of the corner, and then repeat the instructions.
To attach the sheet using binders or crocodiles, tuck the edges of the sheet under the mattress topper, and then attach 4-5 clothespins at each corner. The fixation with the help of loops and buttons is very convenient, because the sheet is securely fixed, and, if necessary, the fittings can be easily changed.
It is most convenient to sew the loop to the edge of the sheet, and the buttons to the mattress, then the small accessories will not come off when washed in the washing machine.
