What sizes are the sheets?

It is easy to get lost when looking at the variety of bedding on store shelves. This applies to both sets and items of underwear sold separately. You can get confused not only in the abundance of colors, but also in sizes. Even models with the same name have a significant difference in actual dimensions.

To make it easier for you to navigate in all this splendor, we will tell you about the main dimensions of such a familiar piece of linen as a sheet. Moreover, there are practically no strict rules governing the size. Some manufacturers, calling the sheet "one and a half", for example, strictly follow the remaining GOST standards, others may seriously deviate from the numbers indicated there. Therefore, in addition to the name, pay attention to the characteristics indicated on the packaging.

Sets marked "single" are no longer on sale, but buying such a sheet separately will not be a problem.

The surviving GOSTs dictate the dimensions of 203x120 or 214x120 for this format. In stores, you can find models 210x120, 210x100, 250x120, 200x100. If suddenly you can't find a perfect mattress for your mattress, you can safely take a larger size, for a 90x200 cm mattress, a lorry lorry is already suitable without any problems.

GOST calls for calling "one-and-a-half" options with a size of 214x130, in reality this is a huge range of sizes: 240x150, 240x140, 220x160, 220x155, 220x150, 215x150, 210x150. A foreign manufacturer usually marks sets with sheets of this size extra long single. In America and Europe, their width starts from 155 cm, in Russia, Asia - from 140.

Sheets for children should be noted as a separate item. They can be divided into those intended for:

• newborns and children under 3 years old;
• children under 12 years old;
• teenage.

GOST says that the size of the latter should be 180x100 cm, and options for children can be 159x100, 138x100 or 117x100. In reality, the choice of children's bedding is much wider, and for a teenager it is even easier to choose a one-and-a-half set, given the modern variety of designs.

The size for the smallest is chosen a little differently than for adults - the width of the sheet should be twice the width of the mattress. The exception is models with an elastic band, here everything should be clear according to the parameters of the mattress. The size range of sheets with an elastic band for children is huge: 90 by 200, 80x200, 80 by 160, 85x170, 75x160, 70x140, 65x125 and so on.

Among other things, there are rubberized baby sheets, which cannot be ignored. Usually these are models with an elastic band, the front side of which is no different from ordinary linen or is made of soft terry cloth, and the back material is rubberized. Perfect for kids who are not yet fully potty trained.

From the smallest we will move on to those that until recently were considered the largest - to double. Old standards regulated their parameters as 160x200 and 214x150. Now the first option is already a lorry, and GOST calls the following parameters: 230x150, 214x150 and 214x145.

In reality, linen tables give the most controversial options for the size of a double sheet. Most often, 214x220 appears, since this can be easily placed on any bed, the width of which fits in the range from 1.20 m to 1.80 m, that is, both on one and a half and on a double bed. For mattresses and beds that go beyond 1.80 m, sheets with a size of 220x240 or 220x260 are suitable - the maximum of the double sheets, which are already next to the euro. You can also find sizes smaller than those indicated in GOST - 210x180.

There are also different types of double bed linen:

• usual (European marking double);
• more than standard by about 5 cm (full);
• family.

If your bed is larger than standard, or different from the usual shape, do not despair. You have a wide choice.

To begin with, there are sets of "Eurostandard" (European marking - queen, 220x240, 240x260), "Euromaxi" (260x280, 245x270, 240x280, 240x260), however, the latter is not found in manufacturers from Russia. On large models, you can also find the name king size.

Another simple solution is to use 2 one and a half or one with an elastic band. The latter have their own size range, which we have already touched upon in the discussion of children's sheets.

They are produced in several versions:

• with an elastic band sewn in only at the corners - such sheets are easy to put on, but due to incomplete fixation, they can get lost;
• with a stretching tape sewn in at the corners, extending onto the long sides of the sheet - it is used with expensive linen made of delicate fabric, since a hard elastic band can damage it (the pros and cons are the same as for the type above);
• with elastic around the entire perimeter - much more difficult to put on the mattress, but the fixation and tension, with the correct size, are almost perfect.

Sheets with an elastic band are less wrinkled during sleep, and in addition, they completely cover the mattress, which is important for many from the aesthetic point of view. In addition, they can be used on non-standard beds, you just need to know the parameters of your mattress.

On the packaging of the product, in addition to the length and width, the height will be indicated. There are three options for how this will look:

• width x length + height (140x200 + 30);
• width * length * height (140 * 200 * 30);
• width x length, side n (140x200, side 30).

And now a few words about choosing the right size for a regular sheet. It should hide the mattress from 3 sides, ideally, refuel from the fourth without any problems. Let's take a berth measuring 170 by 210, mattress height 20 cm.

The calculation scheme is as follows:

• width + (height x 2) = ideal width of the sheet (170+ (20x2) = 210);
• length + height = ideal length (210 + 20 = 230).

As a result, we get 210 by 230, respectively, the model with the size 220 by 240 is quite suitable. The long free part, well tucked in, prevents the sheet from sliding, ensures a restful sleep.

Finally, a couple more tips for choosing a sheet:

• be careful with sets of linen made in Germany and Austria - the sheet may simply not be included;
• carefully inspect the conformity of the size of the product indicated on the package;
• inspect the edges and seams where the elastic is installed - their poor-quality processing will significantly reduce the service life of the product;
• take into account the material when calculating the size - some fabrics shrink strongly after the first wash;
• if you are not sure about your memory, print or save a size chart to your smartphone before going to the store;
• choose underwear from trusted manufacturers.
