Choosing yarn for washcloths
A washcloth is an essential attribute of any person's hygiene procedures. I always want this part of the toilet not only to clean well, but also to be pleasant to the body. It is quite possible to knit such a product yourself.
In the article we will talk about which threads are suitable for this, how to choose the right yarn, and which is better - a natural base or synthetics.
Peculiarities
Washcloths are knitted from natural and artificial materials, which are called synthetic. Natural ones are considered more useful, but their service life is much shorter, moreover, pathogens can start in them, they rot and mold if not properly stored and maintained.
You can use the most natural products for a bath for no longer than 1 month, then you need to replace such a washcloth. Therefore, it is more effective to take synthetic threads for knitting washcloths. It is recommended to use such products for up to 3 months, although they retain their shape and strength much longer - a year or more.
Washcloths made of polypropylene are quite strong, they form a foam well when soaped, they cope with sweat, fat, and are even able to cleanse dead cells.
Washcloths are knitted not only for body care (for an adult or a child - there are some nuances here), but also for washing dishes. Depending on the purpose, the yarn will have its own characteristics.
For example, a steel wire loofah cannot be used if you are following personal hygiene procedures.
Next, we will tell you more about the types of yarn for knitting these products.

Loofah yarn comes with natural fibers and synthetic base. The first include:
-
jute - burlap and twine are made from it, from which, in turn, products for the bath are knitted;
-
manila fiber from spinning banana;
-
bast - extracted from the bark of a linden tree or willow bark;
-
cotton - this yarn is great for crocheting items, but as for washcloths, such accessories are short-lived;
-
flax fiber - processed from flax straw;
-
wool - they often knit washcloths for children;
-
exotic materials - granite wool, stone wool, basalt wool, birch bark;
-
steel fiber - scourers for washing dishes are knitted from it.
There is also a natural ingredient called "Crazy Cucumber" or "Bastard Pumpkin". The dried core of this "fruit" is a ready-made sponge, but you can separate out the fibers (loofah) in order to make a loofah of plant origin in a shape convenient for you.
However, this natural component, like other natural fibers, does not last long.
Synthetic materials include:
-
nylon and nylon threads (suitable as an independent base for washcloths, and as additives to woolen yarn);
-
rayon threads;
-
polyethylene;
-
acrylic;
-
rubber yarn - a mixture of natural and artificial bases;
-
polypropylene threads are the most suitable option for knitting bath accessories for the body.
Polypropylene yarn is characterized by high strength, it is pliable in the formation of a pattern when knitting. Products made from these threads are durable and are not afraid of a humid environment. When choosing a yarn, proceed from the practicality of using a washcloth, the condition of the skin, as well as the desired shape of the product.
How to choose?
Although it is believed that natural washcloths have a healing effect on the skin, such products will last a short time. Well, the fact that pathogenic organisms can start in them is also not encouraging. Therefore, it is still better to choose a synthetic yarn of your favorite color or combine a color scheme and knit not only a convenient, but also a beautiful thing.
Such washcloths are more reliable and durable, they are easy to wash or handle with the right products if necessary. With proper care, synthetic washcloths are more hygienic than natural ones, they are less likely to harbor germs.
Before deciding on the choice of thread, you need to clearly understand what kind of loofah you want. There are hard washcloths, they are knitted from thick yarn, thinner products are obtained from soft ones (starting from No. 2 and higher). Experienced craftsmen advise buying polypropylene, viscose or woolen threads for knitting washcloths from such Russian manufacturers as:
-
"Needlewoman" (a factory in the Moscow region);
-
"Hostess-needlewoman" (Yekaterinburg factory);
-
Semyonovskaya Yarn (Moscow Wool Spinning Production);
-
"Craftswoman" (Samara factory).
If the price-quality ratio matters, then this yarn corresponds to this parameter. For those who use the services of online stores, the price will become even more affordable.
Natural materials, besides being short-lived, are not yet so easy to buy on the Russian market. The choice of such yarn is limited, and special care is needed for such products: they constantly need additional processing, regular washing so that such washcloths do not grow moldy and maintain their hygiene. In addition, the price of everything natural is much higher.
When choosing a material for knitting a baby washcloth, you need to take into account the anti-allergenic factor and the fact that the skin of children is more delicate than that of adults. Linen and cotton - such a base is quite suitable for children and those with sensitive skin.
For those who, on the contrary, have coarse skin, flat massage sponges are recommended. Such accessories can be knitted from sisal. The most convenient and practical thread for making hygienic knitted items is a polypropylene base. On sale you will find this thread in its pure form, well, in a mixed structure, where some of the fibers will be made of polypropylene.
Such a base is perfectly combined with both synthetic thread and natural compounds, and ideally the result will be an excellent product where there is a combination of all materials.
In the absence of yarn at hand, you can knit a loofah from nylon tights. Many do not throw away the used nylon, but put it into action: they cut it into strips 3-4 cm wide and knit products for washing.
A rather beautiful, and most importantly, practical piece for a bath can be knitted from burlap.
Collect the sugar and flour bags, wash them, dissolve the used base, and try piling a masterpiece for a bath.
Any connected washcloth is recommended to be soaked in hot water for 10-15 minutes before use: the product will soften, fluff up, and it will be more pleasant for them to wash.
The exception is bath accessories of this type, knitted from wool. And to wash with them, by the way, is recommended only in cold and cool water. If you dip a woolen cloth in hot water, be prepared for the fact that it will instantly "shrink": it will decrease in size and become tough.
Of the rest of the materials, the degree of hardness and softness can be adjusted by knitting density. Beginners are advised to use yarn from fibers with different textures, for example, where there is a mixture of cotton and acrylic.
