Handicrafts have always been and will be in demand. Nowadays, knitted toys are especially popular. A few years ago, needlewomen knitted them from ordinary yarn, and now there is an opportunity to purchase special threads. There are several varieties of yarn for making toys.

Peculiarities

The yarn for knitting toys differs not only in color, but also in other parameters. These include: thread thickness, hairiness level, elasticity, and even cost.

The distinctive characteristics of such yarn are the following points:

  • variety of colors and shades;

  • allows you to create patterns of different types;

  • the yarn is pleasant to the touch;

  • has a relatively low cost.

It is noteworthy that it is easier to work with certain types of yarn, while others are a little more difficult.

Materials (edit)

All threads for knitting toys can be divided into several types. They differ primarily in composition. The type and quality of future products depend on this.

Acrylic

Acrylic is considered to be the most widespread type of yarn used to create toys. Acrylic yarns have gained such popularity due to their pliability in work. Acrylic toys keep their shape perfectly, regardless of the variety.

The advantages of this type of thread include low cost and good texture. Acrylic products are quite smooth and pleasant to hold in your hands. If the toy needs to be fluffy, then it can be easily created using a comb for animals or ordinary Velcro.

As disadvantages, it should be noted the unpleasant squeak, which is obtained if acrylic threads are rubbed against each other.

Pilling may appear on toys after washing. In order to minimize the negative aspects, it is recommended to choose proper quality acrylic yarns.

Cotton

The main advantage of cotton is its natural origin. The threads are pleasant to the touch, smooth. If we compare with the previous version, then there is already no squeak, unpleasant to the ear. The peculiarity of this type of yarn is that only smooth products can be knitted from it. It is impossible to comb it. If you try to do this with a slicker, the product will be irretrievably damaged.

Experienced craftsmen prefer to use this type of yarn to create rattles, jewelry and dolls. As an additional benefit, it should be noted that it is hypoallergenic. There is only one drawback of cotton yarn - high cost.

Wool

Woolen yarn is practically not used to create a product as the main one. Its purpose is decorative parts. Such threads are indispensable if a knitted doll needs to make hair, and a lion cub needs a mane.

If, nevertheless, a decision is made to knit a toy from this particular type of yarn, all possible disadvantages should be taken into account:

  • may cause allergies;

  • has a fairly high cost;

  • pricks;

  • not available in bright colors;

  • after washing, in most cases, it shrinks significantly.

The advantage lies in the natural composition.

"Grass"

A yarn called "weed" is suitable for creating fluffy products that are pleasant to the touch. It is soft, has many colors and shades, but it will be quite difficult for beginners to cope with it.

When working with this yarn, it must be borne in mind that it must be knitted on the wrong side, since the pile will remain on this side. The disadvantages include: knitting at random, in which you have to sort out the loops, the risk of rolling the pile. Products made of "grass" threads are more decorative. If you give such a thing to a child for permanent use, then soon it will come into an inappropriate form.

Iris

Yarn of this type can also be called decorative. It is suitable for embroidery or creating small details, for example, jewelry, decorating the front of dolls.

The threads are thin, smooth, pleasant to the touch and inexpensive. There are many color options. Of the shortcomings, one can note the painstaking work that will have to be done when using the material.

Plush

This yarn is most suitable for making amigurumi toys. She is characterized by such definitions: fluffy, marshmallow and velor. The yarn is produced in various delicate shades, pleasant to the touch. Toys knitted from such threads turn out to be delicate, cute and beautiful.

The disadvantage is the high cost. Plus, such yarn will be quite difficult for beginners to cope with.

How to choose?

In order to decide on the choice of a suitable yarn, you need to decide what kind of toy you want to create. You should decide on the tools. Crochet and knitting needles are traditional in knitting.

The hook is more suitable for making amigurumi toys. It will be convenient to use knitting needles with fine yarn. Depending on the type of knitting, you should also initially determine the tool numbers.

The choice of threads must be done according to the following criteria.

  1. It is very easy to knit from cotton. This material is recommended for beginners. The toys are smooth and neat, and the loops themselves are very even.

  2. From acrylic threads the same smooth products are obtained, but in this case there is already a slight fluffiness.

  3. Cotton stretch - is also a good option, but some skills are already required here. Most suitable for crocheting. The thread is elastic, the loop is not always obvious.

  4. Threads with pile perfect combination with both crochet and knitting needles. You will have to knit on the seamy side.

Fluffy yarns of any type are inherently more difficult than fluffy yarns. This circumstance must be taken into account. It is better to start with smooth threads, gradually developing your skills, and move on to working with fluffy yarn.

It is very important not only to choose the type of yarn, but also to take care of its quality. Even experienced craftsmen are unlikely to be able to create a beautiful product from yarn of inadequate quality. To protect yourself from working with fakes of different levels, it is recommended to purchase materials only in specialized and trusted stores.

Any toy will turn out to be really beautiful and of high quality, if you observe some of the nuances.

  1. To create toys, you need to choose a hook smaller than the one recommended by the yarn manufacturer on the package.

  2. In the process of work, it is important to control both the seamy side and the front side.

  3. The filler for products should not stick out from the loops or be knitted into the fabric.

  4. All parts of toys must be connected as accurately as possible using a needle and thread.

  5. Tools must meet quality criteria.

Knitting toys is a pretty interesting activity. If you want the thing to turn out really beautiful, and the work process was as comfortable as possible, you need to correctly decide on the choice of the right material. If all the conditions are met, then with the existing skill, creating a small toy in time will take only a few hours.
