Angora yarn
Now handicrafts are gaining more and more popularity. However, needlewomen often face the question of which yarn is best to knit. Having familiarized themselves with many options, knitters give preference to angora. We will talk about the features of such yarn in the article.
What it is?
Angora can be called a versatile yarn. This material allows you to make a durable sweater, coat, plaid and many other products. It does not require much maintenance, but it is also durable. Prices often "bite", but you can close your eyes to this, feeling the warmth of the product. Previously, Angora was the name given to the wool of Angora goats, which were bred by the inhabitants of Turkey. Due to its unique properties, it was highly valued.
The people of China tried to create a parody of this rabbit wool yarn. In this regard, the yarn of Turkey received a new name - mohair, and mohair is a more expensive material than angora. Rabbits are sheared and combed out to obtain natural Angora wool. Due to the minimal consumption of fibers, the yarn is quite economical. Angora received the title of "comfortable elegance" from designers because of its strength, lightness and airiness.
Mohair is produced by shearing young kids “to zero”. The material is silky and delicate, of high quality. The wool of adult animals is used for the manufacture of outerwear.
The best angora is produced by:
- Italy;
- France;
- Japan.

There are only two types of angora yarn. However, both of them are distinguished by fluffy fibers, which make angora products airy and soft. Mohair, for example, is very durable. Angora is smooth and silky, which makes it weakly adhered to the yarn being produced. Now angora in the composition of the yarn does not exceed 80%; acrylic, polyamide or nylon are often added to it.
Animal wool, which is used in the manufacture of angora, should reach a length of 6 to 12 centimeters, however, yarn with a pile length of up to 50 centimeters is also found. It is worth remembering that the longer the pile, the more expensive the yarn.
Net
Pure yarn is called angora yarn without any impurities. However, at the moment, it is almost impossible to meet such. The natural yarn palette is not abundant. White hair is often found as it is usually cut or combed from albinos.
However, sometimes you can find gray or black yarn. But angora is easy to paint, so choosing the right shade is not difficult.
Mixed
To make the yarn look more natural, merino wool is often added to it. Thanks to this trick, the yarn becomes much stronger and more resistant to mechanical stress. Also, yarn with angora often contains mohair or silk: this makes the thread stronger and warmer, and the product retains its shape for a long time. However, such yarn costs a lot of money, compared even with ordinary angora, so it can be classified as elite.
Manufacturers
Of course, any knitter will have a question about where you can buy natural designer yarn without adding synthetics and other materials. Many manufacturers are now behaving dishonestly towards customers: often unnatural impurities can be found in angora yarn. However, only an experienced look can determine this, but novice needlewomen will have a hard time. It will be difficult for them to understand whether the manufacturer is cheating or is really selling a quality product.
You should always remember that natural angora costs a lot. You don't have to immediately run to a store where prices for angora are low. Most likely, it is unnatural.
Below is a list of companies that have established themselves as producers of natural yarn from angora:
- Rabbit;
- Ram;
- Gold Simli;
- Magic Angora Delicate;
- Star;
- Anny Blatt;
- Batik;
- Papatya Angora Cake.
Beautiful products are obtained from angora yarn with an ombre effect: they are soft, warm, like a cloud. Many needlewomen prefer to purchase BBB yarn number 19, which has the most pleasant shade.
What can be linked?
Angora is a delicate, light and fluffy yarn. Any angora product will be very light and quite warm. That is why it is recommended to make only clothes from it. It is good to knit warm winter clothes from angora yarn, you can even knit outerwear. However, a blouse for a cool summer evening will be very useful. A dress, shawl or outerwear will look great, and the tactile sensations of the product will be simply indescribable.
However, some needlewomen do not like the way the products are made, therefore they treat them negatively. The quality of items that contain angora can vary greatly. Manufacturers who dishonestly treat their customers and sell low-quality and fake yarn will not be considered now. We are talking about those who use only natural wool and natural additives in the composition.
For example, yarn that contains 100% angora (yes, there is one, but it is very expensive), will be very soft and warm. However, there is no reason to hope for the durability of such a product, because the wool of angora goats or an analogue from rabbits does not hold on by itself. It is not for nothing that angora is called a fluffy cloud: it earned this name due to its softness. But, like a cloud that cannot make up one continuous mass for a long time, an angora also cannot be in one product for a long time. The wool begins to climb in all directions, so the thread gradually becomes thinner. However, hats from this composition will be very warm and pleasant.
The yarn, which contains a certain small percentage of angora wool, is much stronger. Such yarn can be used to knit a coat, warm cape or any other product for the cold season.Therefore, we conclude that almost any product can be knitted from yarn containing Angora wool. The main thing is to choose the right composition at the same time, and then the thing will turn out to be durable, warm, soft and warming not only the body, but also the soul with its warmth. When knitting things, you can use not only skills, but also imagination, fantasy. You can knit a bolero with buttons, a cape with an airy pattern, a warm hat in a delicate color and much more. Nobody can forbid to do what the soul desires.
How to take care of your products?
Products from angora are very delicate, therefore, they should be treated with special tenderness. However, this does not mean that they should be worn rarely or washed frequently. In contrast, Angora wool has amazing ability to self-purify, therefore, the frequency of washing is about once a month. But it only depends on how often the item is put on.
It is advisable to wash things manually... It is not even recommended to wring out the thing in the washing machine, as this spoils it very much. During automatic washing, the product will begin to "climb" and roll, which will have an extremely negative effect on its appearance. When washing clothes, it is better to use powder for delicate items, handicrafts or for wool. However, many needlewomen, along with other laundry detergents, recommend using shampoo.
Note: Shampoo for colored, fine or brittle hair will not work. It is important to purchase a special baby shampoo that does not sting the eyes and does not corrode the hair. Accordingly, the wool of the product will remain in the same state, only cleaner.
It is necessary to wash it exclusively in 30-degree water, as the product will "sit down" in hot, and the fibers will not open enough in cold. It is important to check the temperature of the water, if possible, with a thermometer, since the hand, especially its back side, for each person individually perceives the ambient temperature. When washing, in no case should you rub the thing with your hands and even more so with foreign objects. Angora yarn is very delicate, so such an effect will negatively affect its condition.
You need to wash the product with extremely smooth and gentle movements. It is necessary to gently squeeze clothes without applying strong pressure. Also, do not take the product out of the water and lower it back, as the inhabitants of the USSR are used to doing. After washing, the clothes should be thoroughly rinsed and wrung out. Let's see how this can be done correctly.
- Pull clothes out of the water, holding them in palms folded in a boat. It is important that not a single piece of fabric hangs from your hands: this way it can stretch very much.
- Squeeze your hands so that water comes out of the product to the maximum. In no case should you twist or shake the thing.
- Put a bath towel in one or two layers (as far as the size of the towel and the product allows) and carefully place the thing in its middle, while straightening every fold on it.
- Roll up the towel together with the product inside with a straw. You should get a kind of roller. Now this roller needs to be gently squeezed out: to do this, you need to gently press on one end of it, gradually transferring the pressure to the other side.
Dry the product only in a horizontal position. You cannot hang it by the edges and even in half, as many are used to. Firstly, with such drying, a fold strip will remain on the product, which will immediately ruin the whole look.
Secondly, the thing can stretch more than twice. Especially often novice needlewomen make the following mistake: they do not completely squeeze the product and hang it by the edges. After such actions, you can get a floor-length dress from a short blouse. You can put the item to dry on a clean table surface or any other horizontal surface.
