All About Melange Yarn
Melange yarn is, first of all, uniqueness in knitting. In the article we will consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a yarn, we will tell you from what composition this thread is made, which products from it will look better, and also how to care for them.
Advantages and disadvantages
As with any yarn, melange yarn has its advantages and disadvantages. Let's consider these points in more detail. Let's start with the pros of melange.
- This is a heterogeneous thread - both in composition and in color. The unusual color allows you to knit original things from it. This is the most profitable solution for beginners, since the variegation will smooth out the unevenness of the knitting, and the inhomogeneous composition of the yarn will literally “eat up” mistakes.
- Melange thread does not require intricate patterns and ornate openwork, since a product, knitted only with front loops, turns out to be completely self-sufficient. It is no coincidence that this type of yarn is called designer.
- Melange knitting of simple clothes of elementary cut makes this work original, exclusive primarily due to the color scheme.
- For products knitted from melange threads, additional decoration in the form of accessories and other trinkets is not required - it is always stylish, fashionable and individual.
- The heterogeneity of the composition of the yarn makes the thing practical, and wearing such a product causes pleasant sensations on the body.
And by choosing textured melange or fancy melange thread, you can knit the only thing that only you have. However, let's look at the disadvantages - there are also quite a few disadvantages.
- So, not everyone likes it, because not everyone loves colorful canvases. In this case, variegation is both a strong and a weak side.
- Not always a heterogeneous yarn composition is a good thing. If the fibers are selected incorrectly, or their ratio is violated, then the thread can shrink or stretch in knitting.
- Fancy melange yarn is not easy to knit, you need to get used to the process and get used to it. In general, the knitting speed decreases when working with such a thread.
- The final result can be disappointing: in melange knitting, you can never predict how a pattern of differently colored fibers will form.
- Different colors of fibers do not always allow you to find the right thread. If the whole range is suitable, then one shade that does not suit you can ruin everything, and you will be forced to abandon such yarn.
However, everything is fixable, and the desired combination of colors can be selected, abandoning the unloved catchy shades, choosing everything in one tonality. And a variety of compositions will allow you to find the option that suits you for knitting.
The biggest plus of melange is that it hides the volume of the body, which is a salvation for a certain category of people. A multi-colored canvas can reduce the figure. Agree that against this background, all other shortcomings of this yarn fade into the background.
Composition
At the present stage, a melange thread of summer and winter collections has appeared. Domestic manufacturers are actively producing series without contrasting threads - this is usually wool + synthetic base. They make quite practical socks, mittens and other products. The domestic market is full of the following varieties of Russian melange (category "winter threads").
- "Troitsky melange" from wool and acrylic in a ratio of 70% and 30%.
- "Arina" (production of the Semyonov factory) from wool and acrylic in a ratio of 50 to 50.
- Melange yarn "Lisa"consisting of acrylic and angora and wool.
- Uniform melange thread "Pekhorka" consists only of wool.
But a wide range of summer melange can be found in foreign manufacturers. These threads contain more cotton and other natural fibers.
What can be linked?
Natural particles in the melange make it possible to knit products from it for both adults and children. They even tie them to pets, create decorative elements and other trinkets. The yarn is pliable in work, it "sits" well on the hook and knitting needles. Multi-colored threads are especially relevant for the summer, gray shades for the autumn-winter period. It looks interesting from melange as knitted summer tops with a deep neckline, T-shirts, light capes, and sweaters, cardigans, vests, coats, scarves.
A set of a hat and a scarf or a lace made of melange threads will make the image expressive and memorable. Sometimes, to emphasize the individual style, it is enough to take a handbag or a clutch made of melange with you. These accessories also knit for both winter and summer. Design items such as pillows, rugs for chairs, napkins, rugs and other decorations and accessories for the home, which are also knitted from melange, are always relevant and in trend. All this gives a unique style to any room.
Melange children's toys are a great alternative to factory dolls, bunnies, bears and so on. Little fashionistas always like bright, colorful clothes, so feel free to choose melange for knitting blouses and sweaters, pants, sandpipers. Children in multi-colored overalls and suits look especially attractive. The same goes for pets. An increasing number of knitters are choosing blended yarns for the manufacture of protective clothing for dogs. But some craftswomen, in addition to overalls and sweaters, knit melange hats and socks for their favorites. Such products have no functionality, but they look very funny on small dogs.
By the way, to get a melange effect when knitting, it is not necessary to buy a melange thread. You can create it yourself by combining yarn of different colors. So, you can take brown threads and add beige and white to them.In another combination, it is brown + beige + light brown or add gray + white to brown. Black goes well with green and brown tones, black + raspberry gives an interesting range. If you are not satisfied with the variegated colors of the factory melange yarn, create your own version of the melange by combining your favorite shades.
With an independent choice, you can achieve softer transitions from one color to another.
How to care?
Experienced knitters recommend making a sample before starting knitting - this way it will be possible to determine the knitting density and make the necessary calculations. And in order to understand whether a sweater (or other type of clothing) "shrinks" or not, it is also better to wash this sample. Based on the results, it will become clear whether the thread "stretches" or "shrinks" when washing. Well, the yarn should be matched to the model. For a sweater, for example, it is better to choose melange, which includes wool (accordingly, choose the thickness).
And for summer clothes, be sure to choose natural compounds with a cotton base - such knitting will allow the skin to breathe. For care, proceed from the composition of the fibers in the yarn. Usually knitted products are stored not on hangers, but folded.
After washing, dry such clothes unfolded on a flat surface. She is not ironed. The maximum can be steamed on a special function with a steamer for clothes, but with proper storage and proper drying after washing, such things do not need additional ironing. If the thread consists of wool, cotton and artificial fibers, then when leaving, be guided by the component that is included in the larger percentage. Another important point: when you buy factory melange, such a thread should not shed during washing - the manufacturer guarantees color fastness.
But if you decide to knit a thing from threads that you picked up yourself from monochromatic compositions, then there is no guarantee that some color will not "float" by smearing the knitted fabric. In this case, it is better to play it safe and add a little vinegar when washing or use industrial specialized formulations.
