Cords for knitting are familiar ropes, reminiscent of those inserted into the hoods of windbreakers and jackets. They are classified according to the type of structure and production method. For example, they are round and flat, thin and voluminous.
The size of the diameter determines the footage of the material in the reel. So, 150-200 m are wound on a reel with a diameter of half a meter. A reel with thicker ropes with a diameter of 1.2 m can hold up to 600 m. Very thick bundles of 2000 m correspond to a reel diameter of 2 m.
By structure
Based on the type of execution, modifications are divided into 2 types: with and without a core. Products of the first group are thin ropes placed in a braid. They are more elastic, resistant to stretching and deformation. Like the braid, the core can be made from different materials. Due to their positive properties, their cost is higher.
Coreless counterparts have greater softness and elasticity. They have excellent stretch during knitting, which reduces the length of the ropes used. Each type of knitting cord can be of a wide variety of colors. In this case, the quality of the options with a core is considered the best.
With a difference of 1 mm, products with a core cost 2 times more. If, for example, a 5 mm thickness is indicated in a master class, and a 4 mm version without an internal cord is purchased, its actual thickness will be noticeably less.
This kind of rope will stretch a lot during knitting. As a result, the product will be 1/3 smaller and thinner. The thickness of the ropes depends on the purpose and can be from 2 to 10 mm for products without a core. Varieties with a core are thicker: this indicator varies between 3-16 mm.
By manufacturing method
The cord in question is braided and knitted. Products of the first type are made from artificial materials of different composition. They are strong and durable. They are made on special equipment from different amounts of fibers (8–52). The strength of a product is related to the number of threads used. The more there are, the more dense and durable the cord is.
Braiding is made by interweaving strands with equal but opposite twist. This ensures product uniformity. The core of braided cords can be solid and twisted.
Varieties of the second type are knitted and crocheted using yarn for the hand process. In comparison with previous counterparts, they are not so elastic and dissolve like any knitted product.
Materials (edit)
In the production of knitting ropes, CB (cotton), polypropylene and other artificial fibers are used, which determine the quality of the finished product. The cotton cord is hypoallergenic and environmentally friendly. Does not "emit" odors, is safe for human health. It has different colors, however, in comparison with other analogs, it is not so elastic and easy to use. It is characterized by high consumption.
Cotton knitting products are more expensive. In comparison with synthetic counterparts, they make heavier things that lie perfectly on the floor.
The polypropylene knitted counterpart has the characteristic sheen of artificial materials. Depending on the design, it can have golden or silver lurex fibers interwoven. It is characterized by slipping and squeaking during knitting.
However, it is more convenient to use in comparison with other types. Easy to wash and clean from dirt.
The polymer look is made of polyester yarns for a pleasant tactile feel. Such products stretch and spring well. They do not deform and retain their shape.
Acrylic cord is often bright and matte. It is inert to fading and in some properties resembles an analogue made from cotton. Does not electrify, has dust-repellent properties. Suitable for knitting textured items.
Also, the cord can be jute and satin. Variants of the second type have a pleasant glossy shimmer in the light. They are not used as often as other analogues. Used for the production of souvenirs, including necklaces and jewelry. Polyamide varieties have maximum strength and reliability.
They do not deteriorate by insects and are inert to decay, the influence of weak alkalis and acids. Their disadvantages are high electrification and extensibility.
Top manufacturers
Various brands specializing in the production of goods of this type are engaged in the production of knitting cords. "Promtex" supplies polyester products with a thickness of 3 mm to the shelves of our stores, cotton and polyester varieties 4 and 5 mm thick with a core. The products of the domestic manufacturer are sold online, delivered by various means of logistics (for example, through the Russian Post).
The Osttex factory produces knitting cords from different raw materials with a thickness of 3–16 mm. The length of the windings varies between 10–500 m (for thin ropes) and 100–3500 m (for thick ones). In addition, knitting cords can be purchased at many craft stores and specialty sites. Such products are referred to as "finishing" or "clothing" cords.
The average assortment of products is available on the "Balls and Baskets" portal. The store's catalog contains cotton and polyester ropes in coils 100 m long (different diameters and shades).
