Features and signs of perverse narcissism
In modern medicine, various kinds of psychological disorders that a person may face are described in sufficient detail. Such disorders include perverse narcissism. The state when a person does not notice anyone but himself can sometimes go beyond and in this case can already be considered a pathology. It is difficult to diagnose this psychological disease, because it is impossible to diagnose a person for sure without having the appropriate knowledge in psychology and psychiatry. This article will describe in more detail the features of this disease, its signs and methods of treatment.
Peculiarities
Perverse narcissism is a specific disorder of personality and certain behavior patterns that can manifest itself equally in women and men. People with this disorder are popularly called "narcissists." However, it is not worth calling every overly self-loving person like that, because this disease is difficult to determine without being a professional doctor. Moreover, this disease has different forms, when a person suffering from this disease does not pose any danger to society. The features of perverse narcissism also include:
- unreasonable high personal self-esteem;
- lack of feelings of regret or experience in relation to other people;
- a feeling of superiority over all other members of society.
Speaking about a “narcissist” man who suffers from severe pathology, we can mention that such individuals “play” their own games against the opposite sex. Which, in turn, often negatively affects the latter. Women begin to suffer from depression, and sometimes more serious psychological trauma.
Perverse narcissists have a peculiar and even specific demeanor, which they develop for more than one year. Such people very often deny their actions and often do not do what they promise. These people almost always try to subjugate the will of their interlocutor or partner.
Perverse narcissists love to manipulate the feelings of others without experiencing true feelings. They are simply alien to them. Such people never consider the opinions of others. Many doctors believe that people with advanced pathology are absolutely cold-blooded and insensitive.
The causes and formation of pathology
To date, there is no clear answer from experts why this disorder occurs. But, like many other disorders and complexes, it can have roots in childhood. This may also be associated with an inferiority complex, dissatisfaction with their appearance or position in society. The provocation of this disease can be caused by improper upbringing or insufficient attention given to the child.
Sometimes experts even talk about a genetic predisposition for this type of disorder. And sometimes this disorder can be a symptom of even more dangerous diseases, for example, it may well be schizophrenia.
Signs
It is rather difficult to list all the signs of a “narcissist”, because each person is inherently very individual, and therefore the disease can manifest itself in one way or another in different ways. Nonetheless, the most significant general points that make it possible to recognize a "narcissist" include:
- very strong fantasies of great success, which the alleged narcissist constantly talks about;
- the presence of desires for reverence on the part of specific people and society as a whole;
- arrogance and excessive ambition, not supported by any actions;
- open negativity to any criticism in your direction;
- all kinds of disguise of complexes;
- using other people for their own selfish purposes.
Men and women with this pathology are never interested in the success of other people, including those close to them. They often talk about idols, and then despise them in every possible way. There are certain signs that are of a gender nature. So, male narcissists are always very arrogant, have desires to become very rich and famous at all costs.
Such men, as a rule, do not deny themselves anything, even if they are not allowed to do so. They very often neglect the attitude of the fair sex. Moreover, men are very demanding and proud. Typical male narcissists are financially dependent on their parents or a lady of the heart. As a rule, they think about the family at the last moment or do not think at all, putting themselves in the foreground. As for women, their pathology of perverse narcissism manifests itself in the following:
- they excessively monitor their appearance, reaching the point of absurdity;
- looking for rich and wealthy partners, even if they understand that they are not a match for them;
- admire themselves at every opportunity, praising themselves in every possible way;
- very often, in pursuit of an ideal appearance, narcissistic women resort to plastic surgeries, other surgical interventions and excessive use of decorative cosmetics.
Despite the fact that a lady may have this type of pathology, it is rather difficult to identify it. In appearance, such well-groomed persons do not at all seem mentally unhealthy and looking for their own benefit, on the contrary, they are often admired.Such girls, like male narcissists, do not prefer to earn money on their own, most often they are financed by their parents. In any case, some people may simply have high self-esteem and this does not mean at all that they are sick.
Therefore, it is worth noting once again that it is impossible to simply diagnose a neighbor, relative, or some strange person, even despite knowing certain features of this pathologist.
Developing a relationship with a narcissist
Many individuals, when starting a conversation with interlocutors, cannot immediately recognize a narcissist. It is also very difficult to identify it just by looking at it. People with pathology are very gallant and often make a good first impression, which makes them enjoyable to interact with. It is almost impossible to suspect anything until a certain time.
The first stages of a relationship with a man or woman suffering from perverse narcissism can seem very “sweet”. Many researchers even call them "honeymoon", but then everything changes radically and the relationship begins to be completely different. Because people with narcissistic perversion have severe personality disorder, they often feel unhappy without showing it. But when their partner gets tired of them, they stop hiding it, showing their true essence. Then the relationship can literally turn into a real nightmare.
It is difficult to say whether it is difficult to say whether to start friendly relations with such people, it all depends on the form of the disease and on how neglected the behavior itself is. But if we talk about serious pathology and directly about the relationship of the couple, then this relationship is a dead end. If they develop for a certain time and bring some kind of pleasure, then in the future they will not bring anything good.
Of course, there may be exceptions in couples, especially if the “narcissistic nature” still wants to be cured.
Typical Techniques of Moral Violence
Despite the fact that the behavior of a narcissist is difficult to predict, experts note certain clichés and specific techniques that people with this pathology skillfully use. So, the technique is referred to as data.
- Exaggerating any problems, embellishing situations in your favor.
- Unwillingness to listen to a partner, to understand his feelings and emotions. Frequent "switching" of full attention to yourself, while the partner is discussing something important and vital. In doing so, the narcissist can use ridicule, dramatically changing the topic of the conversation.
- The fact that the narcissistic partner will misinterpret the words of his interlocutor can also be a wake-up call.
- Also, people with such a disease can simply boycott those with whom they communicate, without explaining the reasons to them.
- And, finally, they can show sudden attacks of aggression, even towards close people and relatives. They can very often be angry when something goes wrong.
A perverse narcissist will always try to destroy another person in order to gain all power over him. And many weak personalities, unfortunately, succumb to such influence.
Treatment methods
The diagnosis and any therapeutic measures must be prescribed by a professional. This disease, as a rule, is not detected at the very beginning of its onset, and therefore it becomes chronic, as a result of which therapy sessions can be problematic. As a rule, specialists develop a certain course of treatment, trying to interest the patient and push him towards self-healing. It is psychotherapy sessions that show the best indicators in healing, and not treatment with medications. It is advisable to prescribe the latter in the event that, in addition to one disorder, a person has depression, panic attacks or any phobias, all this requires mandatory adjustment.
In any specific situations with mixed disorders, a specialist can prescribe to the patient tranquilizers, antidepressants, other sedatives and herbal remedies. However, medications to a greater extent dull the symptoms of a particular disorder without curing the ailment. To achieve the best result, complex therapy should be applied, which necessarily includes meetings with a psychotherapist.
Tips for the victim
Of course, the best way to avoid problems is not to contact such people at all, since it is very difficult to resist them. Perverse narcissists seem to feed on the energy of those they target, it's hard to do anything about it. As a rule, if a man-narcissist is dismissive of his woman in everyday life and in many other things, as far as the family is concerned, then it is difficult to do anything here. Most often, specialists and family psychologists solve problems of more simple situations associated with domestic quarrels.
But if we are talking specifically about the narcissist, then either long-term therapy will be required here, or people will have to disperse.... Sometimes women choose humility, but again, they are not enough for a long time. A woman should realize that if it so happened that her chosen one suffers from this pathology and is a tyrant, then this is not his fault. This has already happened. But this is not at all a reason to endure and allow yourself to be mocked in every possible way.
In rare cases, behavioral correction with the help of a specialist bears fruit, but only if the narcissistic pervert himself is interested in it, and not his victim. It should also be understood that narcissistic people very often suffer from sensations that destroy them from the inside. Some of them even suffer from loneliness, because they cannot control themselves.
