Any air travel should begin with clarifying the norms and sizes of hand luggage provided by the airline. If you do not specify this in advance (and these parameters may differ for each airline), then you run the risk of being fined.

In order not to overshadow your trip, we will tell in this article about the rules and regulations for carrying hand luggage, about the size of the backpack that flight attendants will allow to take on the plane, and also clarify what can and cannot be carried on the plane.

We will also give recommendations on choosing the right backpacks, but first, let's figure out what a carry-on baggage is.

Is it considered carry-on baggage?

A bag for women, a child's or an adult's backpack, a transformer - in order to figure out whether it is hand luggage or personal belongings, you need to study the baggage policy of the airline whose preference you have given for the flight.

It all depends on the size and weight. If the backpack is oversized and weighty (up to 5 kg), then you can simply take it in addition to your carry-on baggage for free. The best assistants in this matter, of course, are the airport workers, who will tell you exactly where the carry-on luggage is, what to put in the luggage compartment, and what can be brought into the cabin as personal belongings.

The latter are not subject to weighing, but hand luggage must be paid attention to at the check-in counter and put it on the scales. An overweight in excess of the norm can lead to penalties, or you will simply not be allowed on the plane, if you nevertheless decide to carry such luggage with you to the cabin.

2017 was the year of revision by airlines of changes to the existing rules for the carriage of baggage and carry-on baggage on the plane. The travel and flight backpack, which the passenger can now take on board free of charge, has the following requirements:

  • He must fit to size (average indicators in length, width and height - 55x38x20 cm, no more than 12-15 kg, but each air carrier may have their own numbers) and fit in the designated place for hand luggage;

  • in carry-on luggage there should be no items prohibited for carriage on the plane;

  • travel backpack as a whole should comply with safety regulations for employees and other passengers of the airliner.

Airlines may have different parameters in terms of dimensions or for the carriage of some items, but in general this is a guideline for all air carriers. In any case, they are allowed on board after a thorough check of what you want to take with you on the plane.

Carriage norms

Each air carrier independently decides what the client can take with him to the cabin - we are talking about weight restrictions. Usually, carry-on baggage weight ranges from 7 to 12 kg (plus or minus for different companies). Anything heavier must be checked in.

Usually, those companies that offer budget flights have more restrictions. From more expensive air carriers, you can bring personal items into the cabin and take hand luggage up to 23 kg. One important caveat: if earlier, in addition to hand luggage, it was possible to carry a handbag or a briefcase with papers inside the plane, now a backpack, if its weight does not exceed 5 kg.

It is no longer the size that matters, but the weight. If the backpack is small, but filled with gold bars or bricks, such a bag will not be taken on board the liner. Speaking about the norms of carriage, you need to study the list of permitted things that airlines offer their customers.

It may vary slightly, but it is better to use the general guidelines from the Federal Aviation Regulations. Clause 133 of these rules, No. 82, clearly indicates what can be carried in the cabin of the aircraft, and what are the norms of carriage. In addition to personal items (including outerwear) and carry-on baggage with established dimensions in size and weight, you will be allowed to take on board:

  • flowers (a bouquet of no more than 15 buds);

  • food for babies;

  • baby carriage (cradle) or other device for moving a child up to 2 years old;

  • medicines needed by the passenger during the air travel (some air carriers may require a corresponding medical confirmation);

  • smart suit in a garment bag;

  • cane, crutch (1 or pair), folding device for the movement of a disabled person;

  • goods purchased in the Duty Free trade network.

As for the laptop, it is better to check with the representative of the airline from which you preferred to buy a ticket.

Dimensions (edit)

Average values for allowable numbers for carry-on baggage - 55x38x20 cm. However, you will often notice that the flight attendant is skipping if the width is 2 cm more. The Russian airline Pobeda, on the contrary, has reduced the parameters not only of the width of the backpack for carry-on luggage, but also the length and height.

As a result, you will be allowed into the plane from Pobeda only if you have a bag (or backpack) 36 cm long, 30 cm wide and no more than 27 cm high. Experts note that this is most likely , an exception.

No one will measure your hand luggage with a ruler.... Airport staff will simply ask you to place your carry-on baggage in a special frame with specified dimensions (validator). Therefore, choose backpacks and bags for air travel. made of soft fabric.

They are more flexible when placed in a validator: this way you can hide an extra centimeter of length, width or height. True, you shouldn't abuse it. Although the responsible persons are trying to close their eyes to this.

For those passengers who once again do not want to boggle their heads with unnecessary information, and will not specify the necessary parameters from their air carrier, experts have determinedSome of the most important rules for a carry-on bag.

  1. It is better not to stuff a backpack with 10 kg, if you are flying in economy class. In business class, the weight of hand luggage is allowed up to 15 kg.

  2. It is better to keep within the following dimensions in size: 55x38x20 cm. Then you can meet the norms when a little more is allowed. But doing the opposite will be more difficult.

  3. Do not take in carry-on baggage piercing and cutting objects, poisonous and flammable substances.

  4. Liquid formulations are allowed to be carried on the plane exactly 1 liter, moreover, each liquid (perfume, shampoo, gel, etc.) is packed in a container with a volume of 100 ml.

Don't go past the check-in counters. Check your baggage not only that you check into the hold of the aircraft, but also that you intend to carry in the cabin of the aircraft. This is important, because if the general rules are not followed, your trip will either not take place or will be spoiled by penalties. You will not get on a plane with a large, heavy suitcase.

Prohibited items

Even if the carry-on baggage meets all the parameters in terms of size and weight, but you have prohibited items in your backpack, then you will have to check in such a bag as your luggage.

Let's list what you need to leave at home if you are flying with only personal belongings and carry-on luggage.

  • Manicure set. The ban is associated with the sharpness of manicure items.

  • Other sharp objects (corkscrew, knives, knitting needles, etc.)

  • Needles for sewing and injection (the latter can be brought in if you have a document from a doctor that you need to make an injection during the flight).

  • Umbrellas (beach type), ski poles. It is checked into the aircraft hold.

  • Aerosol cans.

  • Perfume and other liquid with a volume of more than 100 milliliters.

All of the above that they did not manage to hide in the checked-in luggage will remain at the disposal of the airport staff. Pay special attention to this rule so as not to part with any objects.

How to choose?

Experienced travelers, when choosing a backpack for air travel, pay attention not only to the size and optimal volume.

Here are some other criteria.

  1. High-quality material and reliable fittings - the guarantee of any successful trip, including for a flight.

  2. Backpack weight for any travel it doesn't have to be great. Choose a bag made of lightweight fabric, preferably waterproof.

  3. The simpler and more concise the design, the more comfortable the backpack is on the road. There should be few pockets, so that later in a hurry you do not get confused about where to get what, but even without pockets and compartments it is inconvenient.

Well, you should not give preference to hard, plastic products for hand luggage. This can then play against you when such a bag does not fit in the validator. In any case, before you take off, read the general rules for the carriage of hand luggage, as well as the rules established by your air carriers, and then the flight will be pleasant and calm!
