In Soviet times, one of the most common gifts for weddings, anniversaries, family celebrations was a set. This exquisite set of dishes became an adornment of any interior. The presence of the service was a sign of the wealth of the owners. The Madonna canteens, tea and coffee sets were very popular. In the article we will understand what caused such a high demand for this German-made porcelain set.

History of appearance

Porcelain tableware production began in Germany in the 18th century. The quality of the manufactured products was in no way inferior to the world famous Chinese porcelain. The production of porcelain tableware did not stop during the Second World War. The product has been exported to many European countries.

After the Soviet troops entered Germany, an active interest arose in the Soviet Union in German porcelain tableware, which was distinguished by its excellent quality and aesthetic appearance. Soon, all over the territory of the GDR began the restoration of factories that were engaged in the production of porcelain products.

How did Soviet people know about German porcelain? Why did they make a real boom in the 70s of the last century?

The German service "Madonna" appeared in the USSR thanks to Soviet soldiers, who, returning to their homeland, brought it as a present to their relatives and friends. The exquisite design of the dishes immediately delighted the Soviet people. Now every wealthy family wanted him, because his presence in the house spoke of the prosperity of the owners.

Later, in the early 70s of the twentieth century, tourists, specialists sent on a business trip, began to go to Germany and bring Madonna sets from there as a souvenir. The wide demand for these products has led to the need to expand production.New factories appeared in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Its popularity lasted until 1995. Today, Madonna porcelain sets are practically not produced in Germany; Ilmenau and Kahla are one of the few factories. Their most large-scale production continues in the Czech Republic (Leander plant, Carlsbad) and Poland. True connoisseurs of German porcelain believe that the originals of the sets were produced in Germany in the 50-70s of the XX century, their beauty cannot be compared with modern counterparts.

A distinctive feature of this service was the Baroque painting, which was often complemented by decorations in the form of gilded painting. The image of scenes with half-naked girls looked exquisite.

Today the service is highly regarded among collectors of antique tableware. The older the set, the higher its cost. Unfortunately, we often come across fakes of the service, so in order to easily distinguish the original, a special stamp is applied to each element of the set, which indicates the year of manufacture, as well as the plant where it was made.

You can buy a German porcelain set in specialized crockery stores. As for the Madonna sets, made at the porcelain factories of the GDR, they can be bought at special auctions, but their price will be an order of magnitude higher than modern sets of Czech or Polish production. Modern sets can always be supplemented with new elements from the same collection - salad bowls, various dishes, a cake plate, an egg tray, a tray, a fruit bowl and others.

And also antique sets can be purchased from a private person, but here it is important to immediately check the authenticity of the service so as not to stumble upon a fake.
