Cobalt Mesh Sets
The article will discuss such a unique concept as cobalt mesh. And this is not only a pattern - it is the corporate identity of the Imperial Porcelain Factory (formerly the Lomonosov Porcelain Factory). This is how not only dishes are decorated, but also other things: caskets, candlesticks, decor. The blue range, in combination with white, generously shaded with 22-carat gold, creates an impression of triumph and splendor.
This is a visiting card of the whole of St. Petersburg - one cannot fail to notice here the sea blue, and the sparkling of domes and spiers, and the exquisite lattice of parks.
History of creation
Cobalt netting - a unique pattern reminiscent of the Northern capital - has an amazing history dating back more than half a century. The painting appeared on the dishes in 1944 thanks to the talented artist Anna Yatskevich. In the 30s, Anna Adamovna, after graduating from an art-industrial school in Leningrad, went to work at the Leningrad Factory, to which she gave 20 years.
True, initially the pattern was not cobalt - the first batch of sets was with a gold mesh. Having critically examined the product with the artist's eyes, Anna Adamovna replaced the gold in the drawing with blue. This is how the first tulip-shaped tea set was painted in blue. And today it looks the same as it did then - against a snow-white background, a dark blue check, decorated with accents at the intersection of lines made of 22 carat gold.
There are two versions of the origin of the cobalt ornament on the dishes.
- Anna Yatskevich created this pattern when she looked at the sealed windows in besieged Leningrad. These lines allegedly attracted the attention of the artist, born in Leningrad, who remained at home during the blockade. This pattern seemed interesting to Anna, and she decided to try to paint the porcelain in this way.
- According to another version, these are snowflakes in the bright rays of the northern sun.
Historians have a completely different version, supported by facts. They believe that the idea of a mesh pattern was inspired by the artist's old service, made by order of Elizabeth Petrovna in the 18th century. by Dmitry Vinogradov himself, who is considered the founder of the production of Russian porcelain.
Be that as it may, the exquisite and ceremonial pattern was adopted. For this innovation, Anna Adamovna received a government award - the Order of the Red Star.
In 1958, at the Brussels World Exhibition, the plant from Leningrad presented an impressive collection of its best products. At the same time, they showed the products that were in force at that time. They did not develop anything specially, the task was different - they wanted to acquaint visitors with a wide range of products, while not trying to somehow capture the imagination. And so, quite unexpectedly, the Tulip service, decorated with a cobalt net, was awarded a gold medal for its pattern and shape.
After a while, the ornament was also noted in our country, assigning the product the "Quality Mark of the USSR", which was very honorable at that time. This is how the triumphal procession of cobalt mesh began not only across the country, but around the world.
When the USSR collapsed, the plant was in decline for some time. The year 1997 was the year of its reorganization. Products began to be produced, including for export.
Since 1997, more than 45 thousand pieces of porcelain with cobalt patterns have been sold.
Service overview
For a long time, the technology was the same - a cobalt mesh was manually applied to the fired biscuit. Then the porcelain is fired again, then glaze is applied. At the final stage, the "bugs" were also manually drawn with 22-carat gold leaf.
Currently, the painting technology has been simplified. Initially, it was used to decorate the service, made in the graceful Tulip shape, for which it was designed. The decor looks great on other models, such as "Wave", "Youth", "Gift".
More than 150 models with branded cobalt netting today in the assortment of the plant are not only sets, but also plates, sets for wine, as well as jugs, tureens and much more.
