Like all dogs of dwarf breeds, the Spitz needs constant care of the owner. The most common among the representatives of this breed is the Pomeranian. Lovely affectionate dogs, resembling a miniature bear cub, were bred in Germany. This is a convenient and compact breed for keeping in conditions of even small apartments.

Features of the breed

The appearance of the Spitz, especially the muzzle, resembles a fox - a round head and not far-set, medium-sized ears. Small rounded nose, usually brown or black. Pomeranians have a short body with a deep chest and round ribs.

This purebred dog is available in black, white, tan with black or blue colors. Also, a fluffy coat can be brown, cream, brown, orange, dark chocolate, black and red as standard.

Small "cubs" have standard parameters: in height they are from 19 to no more than 30 cm, at the withers - 19-22 cm, the weight of the pet is from 1 to 4 kg. The maximum age that Spitz can reach is 15 years.

The main difference between Pomeranians is their beautiful, soft and thick fur. Thanks to the dense undercoat, it is lifted up, as if it were specially blown-dry. The maximum amount of hair grows on the Spitz's neck, shoulders, hind legs and tail.

From birth Pomeranian pretty good health. External attractiveness often provides the breed representatives with first places at exhibitions. A more detailed description of the breed will make it possible to understand whether the potential owner will be able to fully take care of the pet, and will also help prepare himself and the house for meeting and training the puppy.

Pomeranian ideal for urban living. The dog does not need intensive care and can become a faithful companion to a caring owner. Suitable for an experienced dog breeder and a simple lover of four-legged friends. But it is important to acquire a reference sample puppy in a specialized nursery, contacting only a trusted breeder. First, you need to ask about the pedigree of the fluffy baby.

Having once seen a tiny Pomeranian, it is impossible not to fall in love with him. This is an affectionate, easy-going, loyal fluffy dog. He is so outgoing that he simply cannot stand being alone. Wherever the owner is, the little pet will strive to faithfully follow him.

The Spitz has a friendly but courageous character. A young dog is not aware of its small size and fearlessly rushes at large animals. This behavior may not be safe for him.

If other animals live nearby, babies are more restrained with them, especially if they grew up next to them. The miniature companion has a playful, cheerful disposition. This is an energetic dog, obedient and extremely quick-witted.

Spitz have excellent hearing and a tendency to take the owner "for the main". That's why dogs are easy to train and understand commands very well.

These clever dogs everywhere seek to protect their companion. Spitz are endowed with high intelligence, devotees, with a pronounced sense of their own dignity. They get along well with small family members and are very fond of games and communication. For these pets needs a lot of attention... Spitz are strangers incredulous, but not aggressive.

The puppy's growing up period is long. If he exhibits inappropriate behavior, it is not worth bringing him up physically. This form of upbringing will not lead to anything good. In the case of the Pomeranian, it is important to find compromises.

The best option is to distract the pet's attention, or rather, switch it. And all valuable things should be removed from his field of vision for a while. If expensive shoes or a favorite trinket remained within the reach of the baby and was gnawed by him, then the responsibility for what happened lies with the owners. The periods of activity in the Spitz are replaced by the position of passive observation.

Where to lodge?

The little dog is a big "adventure seeker" who will explore all corners of the apartment with curiosity. Therefore, it is important to eliminate all cracks in advance. It is better to move the refrigerator and heavy furniture closer to the wall.

If there is an open balcony in the house it is important to take care of the safety of the structure for a small pet... An inquisitive puppy can squeeze through the fence and fall. It is also necessary to think about the floor covering if it is slippery for the Spitz. So that the baby's hind legs develop correctly, he should not slide them on the floor.

The mat will help to avoid troubles with the development of the baby.

All the following things should be hidden from the Spitz:

  • drugs with a chemical composition;
  • everything is small and sharp;
  • rubbish.

It is also advisable to remove dishwashing liquid and trash can away from the dog. If the latter does not work out, then the bucket must be covered with a tight lid.

    Where the Spitz lives, it should not show through. Small pets catch colds easily. But there is no place for babies near batteries either. The puppy will feel most comfortable in a special mobile plastic box, bought in a pet store, or in a basket with soft diapers.

    It is advisable to place the "bed" in the bedroom so that the small pet is not lonely at night. But in no case should a Spitz be taken to bed. So you can accidentally injure the dog, and besides, then it will not work to wean it from the habit of sleeping next to the owner. So that the kid gets used to his place faster, you can periodically put various "dog" toys and tasty treats there.They will evoke pleasant associations with the place of sleep in the baby and thus he will become attached to him.

    Feeding

    After purchasing a Pomeranian, it is important to think over its nutrition. At first, it is better to feed the dog with the food that the breeder fed him. If this is not possible, the introduction of a new feed should be gradual, no sooner than 7 days after settling in a new place.

    It is advisable to feed a miniature pet professional dry food with a high protein content of animal and vegetable origin, enriched with vitamins.

    Natural food from the master's table may not suit the baby. Meals are distributed according to the recommendations indicated on the food packaging and taking into account the age of the dog.

    Sometimes it is shown to add fermented milk products, vegetables and local fruits in their natural fresh form, boiled meat to the menu. Proper nutrition is usually like this:

    • high quality water;
    • lack of pork meat, sweets, sausages and smoked meats, salty, spicy food;
    • limiting dairy products, fresh cabbage and legumes.

    A natural daily menu should include:

    • lean beef fillet;
    • chicken (pulp);
    • sea fish;
    • boiled eggs;
    • fermented milk products with a reduced percentage of fat;
    • vegetables;
    • crackers or unleavened biscuits;
    • cereals (no added oils and unsweetened).

    You can not treat the dog:

    • pasta, bread and rolls, legumes;
    • potatoes;
    • delicacies not for dogs;
    • small bones.

    You should never follow the lead of a dog begging for something from a common table. It is necessary to cook for him separately and daily so that the food is always balanced and fresh.

          Veterinarians do not mind the use of dry food for daily nutrition. The only rule is that "drying" should be of premium class. These feeds are more expensive than the economy class, but they are made from extra-quality products with the maintenance of the balance of all valuable vitamins and minerals.

          Mixed meals are allowed for oranges. But with this mode, you cannot mix dry food and natural food in one step. If the pet was first fed "drying" and later it was decided to transfer to "natural", the factory feed does not need to be changed all at once. Once you start cooking for him yourself, switch to fresh food gradually. Mixed meals are recommended first.

          Check your dog's health carefully. When liquid feces appear, veterinarians recommend returning to the previous diet. You can try again the transition to "natural" later, when the dog's stool is completely normal.

          Diet monthly

          From the age of three weeks, minced meat is added to the mother's milk in the baby's menu. If the monthly Pomeranian is weaned from the bitch, you need to feed him 6 times a day with liquid porridge with fresh milk, homemade cottage cheese, minced meat with vegetable puree.

          At the age of 2 months, the Spitz continues to eat in the same way, but exactly 5 times a day. It should be borne in mind that the food is made for the baby, so the portions should not be large.

          As soon as the fluffy crumbs are 3 months old, the minced meat is gradually replaced with larger pieces. It is convenient to add them to porridge made from rice or buckwheat. This is necessary for the dog to gradually get used to eating solid food.

          During this age period, the Spitz's need for "milk" is declining. To replace milk, broths on meat are introduced into porridge. The number of feedings is reduced to 4. On a mixed diet, pieces of dry food are pre-soaked with broth or canned food is used for the first time to preserve the baby's teeth.

          The diet of a 6-month-old Pomeranian is undergoing changes again. Now the dog needs to be given food three times a day. The predominant component of the menu is meat in small pieces. Rice (buckwheat) porridge, carrots, pumpkin, zucchini, broccoli, cottage cheese, yoghurts and yogurt are used as auxiliary products.

          Twice a week, the dog should be treated with boiled eggs added to cottage cheese or porridge.

          From 8 months, the orange goes to an adult feeding regime - twice a day. It is important to provide the dog with free access to drinking water.

          Vitamins

          When thinking about buying a vitamin complex for a Pomeranian, you must first get a recommendation from a veterinarian. A specialist competent in this matter will personally assess the condition of the pet, the quality of its wool and teeth, and hear from the owner details about the diet. Based on the information received, the veterinarian will conclude which nutrients the dog needs. When feeding a Spitz with food from the premium class segment, it is possible to do without vitamins altogether. Such feeds already contain all the necessary complex of nutrients.

          But there are times when, even when consuming the most selected food, the dog needs to be given vitamins for additional support. This is the period of molting and pregnancy, after an illness or operation, a change of teeth.

          How to care for a Spitz?

          For a beloved pet to live a long and healthy life with comfort, it needs to be provided with the right maintenance. First of all, you need to keep his coat, teeth in order and observe the daily regimen. The key to caring for a fluffy coat is combing it thoroughly. The fur should not be allowed to gather in lumps. Also, the pet needs a vaccination at the age of 4 months and an annual vaccination.

          In outdoor walks, the Spitz must participate in any season of the year, but the dog must also be trained to the litter box without fail.

          Proper care is also a certain routine of the day. You need to feed and walk the orange at the same time. Thus, the animal will be disciplined, and the owner will be able to streamline his regime based on what the pet needs.

          Before you take a Pomeranian puppy into your home, you need to prepare a personal "home" for him, convenient dishes for food and water, a tray, special hygiene products, brushes for combing wool, including a high-quality slicker. It is advisable to purchase special scissors for the dog with rounded ends, a muzzle and ear drops. All of these accessories should be purchased with a focus on a small small breed puppy.

          You need to take care of such a pet carefully and carefully. Only then will the master's efforts be appreciated by the four-legged friend. In response, he will tirelessly give him his good mood and demonstrate vigorous health.

          Eyes

          It is important to handle them correctly. This should be done with a sponge or cotton swab dipped in cooled boiled water. The procedure is carried out as soon as it gets dirty. It is allowed to use a decoction of chamomile or marigolds (calendula) heated to a warm state instead of water. Immediately after the procedure, you should not take the dog for a walk because of the risk of weathering the eyes.

          Teeth

          It is imperative to take care of them at home, as they are the most vulnerable spot in small dogs. To care for the teeth of a Spitz, you need to get a special toothpaste and a brush. To prevent plaque accumulation on the dog's teeth, it must be removed once a week.

          You can use folk remedies for this. Perfectly cleanses the oral cavity solution of 1 tsp. soda with the same amount of salt per glass of water. If you don't have a brush, a piece of gauze will do.

          During the period when the Spitz's teeth begin to change, it is necessary to contact the veterinary office.

          Claws

          Their spitz needs to be trimmed regularly. They themselves do not grind, which is typical of some other breeds. It is wiser to entrust the cutting of the claws to a specialist so as not to damage the vessels inside the claw due to inexperience.

          But if you want to carry out the procedure yourself, you need to use special high-quality nail clippers. It will not be superfluous to prepare a hemostatic agent. Trim the claws with forceps by 1-2 mm. At the same time, you need to talk affectionately with the dog and firmly fix the paw in your hand.

          Ears

          They also need regular care. Healthy ears appear pink and clean. It is not difficult to maintain them in this state. You need to gently clean them twice a week with cotton swabs. In case of redness or swelling of the ears, the dog must be urgently shown to the veterinarian.

          Wool

          The main advantage and attractive external quality of the Pomeranian is its thick and shiny coat. Taking care of her is quite simple, having the necessary tools in the arsenal. Caring for a luxurious orange fur coat consists in brushing it twice a week with a special brush that comb out excess fluff. Then the fur is combed with a regular comb. The procedure cannot be done daily, since there is a risk of combing out the entire undercoat of the pet.

          As for the orange cut, it shouldn't be global by standard. The "fur coat" is only slightly trimmed, carefully cutting off excess hair near the anus. During the molting period, the fluffy coat is combed twice a day to avoid the formation of tangles. This is done very delicately and carefully with a soft brush.

          The Spitz is washed with shampoo intended for long-haired dogs. This is done no more than once a month. An exception is the upcoming exhibition. It is imperative to bathe your dog before going to the "show". Before bathing the dog, you need to comb it out thoroughly.

          It is necessary to comb the pet often and carry out treatment from ticks and fleas. During molting, a taboo is imposed on water procedures. Bathing during this period will ruin the Spitz's coat, it will begin to curl and lose its exterior and well-groomed appearance.

          It would be good to dry a bathed Spitz with a hairdryer, but, of course, not with hot air, but warm air.

          If the dog dries on its own, fungus and even mold can grow in the undercoat.

          Toilet training

          A small pet can be sloppy at first. After all, the dog is used to being watched by his mother. If a fluffy puppy gets dirty while relieving it, wash it off with warm water and wipe it off with a paper towel or soft cloth.

          Slowly and persistently teach your pet to go to the litter box so that he does not make unpleasant surprises later. For example, when it will not be possible to take him on a planned walk.

          Necessary toys

          If a furry family member has a variety of dog toys to choose from, he probably won't be naughty with your furniture and household items. Therefore, it is important to take this point into account and purchase all kinds of children's tweeters made of dense rubber. Plush animals with plastic and metal elements are not suitable for a dog. Playing with such objects can damage the dog's teeth. Better to buy toys in a special section of the pet store.

          Walking

          Walking with a puppy is allowed only after vaccination. The dog needs not only care, but also vaccinations. Until that moment, you shouldn't take him on a visit, but on the street he should be strictly in the hands of the owner.

          After all the vaccines have been received, the Pomeranian can be trained to take short walks. For the first walk, 20-25 minutes of “promenade” is enough 2 times a day, so that he does not get too tired. The duration of the walk is gradually increased.

          It is unacceptable for an orange to be under the scorching sun because of the risk of getting heatstroke. In rainy and windy weather, you need to walk, but you need to put on a special dog jumpsuit on your baby. This will save your pet from colds.

          It is undesirable to walk the Spitz in deserted places, as the pet needs to socialize. It is better to choose parks and squares for walking. From his youth, a Spitz needs to get used to seeing other people and "communicating" with dogs. Otherwise, he may grow up to be a cowardly couch potato.

          Before "going out" with a Pomeranian, it is important to learn basic commands. The main team is “to me”. The main thing is that the dog unquestioningly goes to the owner's call.You need to keep the baby only on a leash, which is necessary for its safety. It is better to accustom a pet to a collar gradually, putting it on at first only at home for a short time. Only after he stops noticing the collar on him, you can attach the leash to it.

          Vaccination

          It is possible to vaccinate Pomeranian Spitz in extremely healthy condition. Two weeks before vaccination, antiparasitic prophylaxis is required. Anthelmintic drugs can be given once a quarter, but not more often.

          After being vaccinated at 12 weeks, the puppy can only be walked outside after 21 days. In the future, the dog will be vaccinated at the age of one year, after the change of teeth, and then annually. Veterinarians advise giving polyvalent vaccinations. These vaccines contain protection against distemper, hepatitis, rabies and other diseases.
