Light curtains for the living room: what are they and how to choose the right one?
Light curtains in the living room can add air and visual volume to the room. This is especially valuable in rooms of a small area with one window, as well as in those rooms that do not face the sunny side. Veil or organza curtains are the best option when you want the room to remain filled with fresh air and sunlight.
Peculiarities
Since curtains are most often made from voile or organza, as well as tulle, they have excellent transmission properties for light and air. Due to their thinness and weightlessness, they do not impede the movement of air currents in the room at all. They can be natural or artificial, and both look great. Curtains made from natural fibers are much more expensive, so they are used less often.
You can decorate window openings with light curtains in any living room. High-tech or eco style can be organically complemented with linen curtains, possibly coarse-woven. Provence or country styles are decorated with finely printed curtains with a floral pattern (in the first case) and geometric (in the second). Translucent double-layer curtains are ideal for creating the effect of diffused sunlight, so loved by many for the feeling of coziness and comfort.
Distinctive properties of the veil
To the main features of translucent interior fabrics can be attributed:
- excellent ability to transmit light and air;
- pleasant texture, soft and smooth;
- the widest choice;
- the ability to maintain a given shape, excellent drape;
- susceptibility to mechanical damage - it is not difficult to hook, break, burn with an iron such products;
- fabrics wrinkle very much;
- do not lose their properties for a long time with proper use.
Color palette
The most popular are white curtains made of light fabric; they can be used as an independent element of decor or as a component of a composition with roller blinds, Roman blinds or with a curtain. Neutral options are no less in demand: beige, milky, champagne, light gray, light coffee. Most often, they decorate living rooms, designed in classic or modern styles.
As for bright curtains, they can be a wonderful accent color. Due to the translucent texture of the material, such curtains will not “hit” the eyes with color and at the same time will add sharpness and piquancy to the interior. Mediterranean style, hi-tech, boho, ethnic - this is a small list of design types where bright color accents can be applied.
The most popular shades are: lemon, turquoise, mustard, orange, coral, mint, lavender.
Taking into account the excellent drape properties of lightweight materials, it is easy to combine different colors with each other, creating both two-tone compositions and using more shades. These can be contrasting tones or different shades of the same color. Due to the lightness of the veil, its multi-colored cuts can be sketched, layered, crossed with each other, or simply hung on the cornices next to each other. Thus, unexpected and very original combinations are obtained.
Dimensions (edit)
To correctly calculate the size of future curtains, you need to imagine how they will look. Will they go down to the floor or slightly cover the windowsill? If the room has a balcony and, accordingly, a balcony door, you should consider the composition of curtains on the window and door so that it looks harmonious. In addition, it is necessary to take into account how the curtains will be attached - on the cornice-rod or on the string (then a slight sagging of the structure must be provided).
If the material simply hangs, reaching the floor, then the calculation of the length is as follows: the height from the floor to the eaves plus 25-30 cm. If you plan to drape the cuts, twisting or twisting, the calculations will have to be carried out on the spot, measuring everything with a tape measure.
It is better to take a fabric with a small margin so that it spreads elegantly on the floor than it looks like a "short ponytail".
How to choose the right one?
When making a choice, you must first of all proceed from the style in which your living room is decorated. Bright scarlet or gold curtains are suitable for an art deco hall. And juicy turquoise or lemon curtains - for a Mediterranean-style living room. The curtains should, among other things, be in harmony with the window frame. When deciding to decorate a room with printed curtains, you should proceed with caution. A thin veil can be "overloaded" with a print, on the contrary, a drawing can be illegible on a translucent fabric.
In order not to be disappointed in your choice, you should imagine how your curtains will look in the final form. Your expectations may not coincide with the real state of affairs, in most cases this happens precisely when a person does not represent the difference between a sample and a large web of material. To prevent this from happening, when buying, you should focus on how the fabric looks on the window, on the cornice. It is undesirable to select only on the basis of a tissue sample.
