Pros and cons of corgi breed
These fluffy little dogs captured the hearts of many, but the first to appreciate their beauty and cuteness was the English queen, who was the founder of their breeding.
Origin
The breed is more than one hundred years old, the first mention of the Welsh Corgi was in the 10th century in Wales. It is known that these dogs were excellent shepherds. Having short legs, they could easily dodge the hooves of animals when helping in the herding business. This breed is one of the first related to the shepherd. Welsh Corgi is divided into 2 types:
- welsh corgi cardigan;
- welsh corgi pembroke.
One of the legends says that these dogs were introduced to people by forest nymphs, who used them as sled dogs. This explains the spot on the back of the Pembroke, which resembles a saddle. It is customary for Welsh Corgi to belong to the family of shepherd dogs, only dwarf ones.
Despite their attractive appearance, the dogs of this breed were not popular, but acquired it in 1892 after the first participation in the exhibition. And half a century later, the breed gained worldwide fame when the King of Great Britain presented such puppies to his 2 daughters. One of them, Elizabeth II, started breeding Welsh Corgi.
Description
The Welsh Corgi Cardigan and the Welsh Corgi Pembroke differ from each other quite significantly from the point of view of professional breeders. Although a common man in the street is unlikely to distinguish that the species are different. The Pembroke Corgi is smaller in stature and has a different head shape than the Cardigan. The cardigan corgi has longer legs, which makes it more efficient than the Pembroke. In the latter, more and more deviations from the norm in both weight and height have recently been observed, and the legs remain unchanged in length, which makes the ground clearance even smaller, due to which they seem less agile and suitable as a domestic decorative dog.
Cardigans also have a wider chest, excellent posture, an aristocratic skull shape and resemble the mini-face of a large German shepherd. And Pembrokes, in turn, evoke a smile of affection more. The contoured mouth makes the Pembroke Corgi appear to be smiling. They have the shape of a fox's head.
The color of the Pembrokes differs from the color of cardigans in more saturated tones. The colors are varied: from golden-red with white spots to black, but this is very rare. The most common are tricolor colors: brown-white-black with different shades. And cardigans are known for their brindle color.
The length of the dog's coat is almost the same as that of the Shepherd Dog, but the Cardigan has a stiffer coat than the Pembroke. The undercoat is thick and water-repellent. The growth of cardigans by the standard is from 26 to 13 cm, and the weight ranges from 12 to 17 kg, depending on the sex of the dog. Pembrokes reach a height of 25 to 30 cm, and weigh 13 - 20 kg.
Another significant difference is that Pembrokes were often born scanty, or their tails were docked until they were banned in many countries, and it is simply impossible to find a bobtail cardigan. In this regard, the Pembrokes began to look even more like foxes, when it turned out that their tail was fluffy, and the muzzle also very much resembles a fox.
The lifespan of the cardigan is slightly longer than that of the pembroke. The average is 12 to 15 years.

Disadvantages:
- Price. Due to its popularity, this breed is quite expensive. A thoroughbred puppy from professional breeders will cost about 60 thousand rubles.
- A clear voice. The breed is not very talkative, but if your pet has been taught to bark, then the dog's voice will amaze you. When you can't see who is making the sounds, you might think that the German Shepherd is barking, and not this baby. If the dog is not weaned from barking, then he will do it with pleasure and very often. Therefore, if you are not satisfied with this alignment, engage in re-education of the dog.
- Due to their direct appointment as a shepherd, corgi often bite people on the heels. Apparently, the instinct, when in this way these dogs influenced the livestock in the performance of their herding duties. If from childhood you do not wean from this habit, then the dog will always strive to bite you and the household by the leg.
- Voracity. It is necessary to be very scrupulous about the diet of this dog.Otherwise, the corgi is threatened with obesity, and with it the diseases associated with this misfortune.
- Activity... The fact is that these shepherd dogs are used to moving a lot. You should throw out the accumulated energy by walking 3 times a day, otherwise the corgi puppy will turn your cozy home into a gnawed one.
- They are completely unsuitable for the role of a security guard. Don't try to get the corgi to guard the house. Because of their soft, harmless nature, these dogs love everyone and everyone, so in order not to endanger the dog himself, you should not assign him the duties of a watchman.
- Requires careful maintenance: it is necessary to comb out constantly.
Owner reviews
Reviews about the breed are positive. According to most owners, dogs are distinguished by intelligence, cheerfulness, kindness, and learning ability. The disadvantages, judging by the reviews, include the fact that the dog needs to be bathed often: because of its short paws, the fur on the belly is constantly getting dirty, especially in rainy weather.
All owners also confirm that you need to walk a corgi for a long time, otherwise the unused energy will badly affect the furniture in the house.
