A product called Pedigree is one of the most recognizable pet food products around. It has been sold in Russia for almost 30 years, and the demand for the products is beyond doubt. The very history of the brand began in 1957, and the Chappi company is considered its creator.

Previously, the product was supplied to Russia from Germany; today, feed is produced at Russian factories. Those who are looking not only for good dog food, but also for a brand with an excellent reputation, Pedigree will love: the company pays a lot of attention to organizing dog shows and charitable projects.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the product is its relatively low cost. This feed is an affordable segment, which is determined by its composition. Roughly speaking, the manufacturer does not raise the price beyond a reasonable correlation with the base of the composition, which is stated in the formula. This means that a popular pet product works not so much on marketing as on an already established positive reputation, composition and availability that are understandable to the buyer.

Other pluses of the feed:

  • it is not difficult to find it in stores, it is, indeed, available, it is present on the shelves of pet supplies in almost all supermarkets (most of them);
  • a complex mineral supplement in the composition of the feed is an excellent solution, because the standard composition is significantly enriched;
  • a wide range of products includes canned food, pouches, and even products for cleaning a dog's teeth.

In principle, this list is already enough for the buyer to take the product of this brand from the shelf. But if you look further, the disadvantages are also obvious.

Cons of food:

  • the proportion of meat ingredients is small;
  • the percentage of ingredients on the package cannot be found;
  • there are a lot of by-products in the composition, but what exactly is used is not indicated on the package;
  • there are claims to the quality of cereals;
  • not the richest composition.

And here you have to make a choice. Either look for something more nutritious with a more transparent composition for your pug or shepherd dog, or agree to an affordable, inexpensive option that has been on the market for a very long time (which means that it is not difficult to find reviews, take recommendations from a veterinarian).

Features of the composition

The Pedigree product line used in Russia does not quite match the European and American brand products. And great emphasis should be placed on the product category: this is not a luxury food, but an economy product. For some, this is a severe restriction, for some it is a reason to mix inexpensive food with another, or use it as an addition to the basis of the diet, represented by natural products. The composition can be viewed using the example of a popular offer of food for adult dogs.

  • Protein... It is represented by chicken and meat flour. The beef in the feed is 4%. True, the manufacturer indicates not the percentage of the ingredient in the product, but its weight. Therefore, without preparation, it is impossible to understand how much meat is in feed or fiber, for example.
  • Carbohydrates... Rice, wheat and corn are what the growers have chosen. But rice, alas, is not the most popular, much more is put in wheat and corn feed. But rice is healthier and more valuable for a dog.
  • Cellulose... Presented with beet pulp. This is a good ingredient for regulating your dog's blood sugar to optimize digestion.
  • Fats... Animal fat and sunflower oil, everything is standard here.
  • Minerals and vitamins. These are brewer's yeast, complex compounds. In this sense, the food is really not bad, even if you include the maximum criticism of the composition.

It is very common for Pedigree to contain by-products. It's bad that there is still no specifics on this issue from the manufacturer. For Pedigree economy feed, it is quite a normal option, predictable, popular, with understandable expectations. But in the tops of the best, if he meets, then he certainly does not lead.

Comparison with other brands

There are brands that are more often compared to Pedigree. Probably because their price segment is approximately equal. Take Darling (Purina) for example. This is a French product based on cereals. The manufacturer, by the way, also does not indicate what kind of cereals are in the composition. Protein is meat and by-products, again, without a clear indication. In this sense, Darling loses to Pedigree: its description is even more impersonal, it is difficult to make out the composition, and the prices for feed are quite comparable. In addition, dyes were used, which, again, are not indicated.

Pedigree also competes with Dilli, a domestic product in dry granules, produced in the Altai Territory. It contains a lot of protein, but it is vegetable protein from soybean meal, corn gluten and wheat germ. Many buyers are attracted by the 22% - the protein indicator on the package, but vegetable protein is absorbed by the dog's digestive system much worse. The allergenic index is also high.

Finally, Pedigree and Chappi are often compared, although they are not direct competitors, because they are produced by the same company. And the composition of Chappi needs detailing just as much. It says that there are cereals in the feed, but which ones are not indicated. But a dog may be allergic to a certain cereal, therefore it is dangerous to buy food without detailing. That the meat in this feed is also not indicated, or chicken, or beef, there is a note in the name of the feed, but not a word in the composition. And also Chappi assumes the use of vegetable protein ingredients in the composition, again, without specific indication.

It turns out that both Chappi, Dilly and Darling are no better foods than Pedigree. But this comparison as a whole, it is not always correct, because the product line is represented by different names.

Range of food for adult dogs

Dog food today is varied - from wet pates to dry granules.Various desserts are also produced that dogs cannot eat on an ongoing basis, but from time to time you can allow them such a treat.

For all breeds

Examples of such products are complete beef food for adult dogs of all breeds. The manufacturer states that the product is formulated with the physiological needs of the animals in mind and that research initiated by the company has shown that dogs that regularly receive Pedigree have improved digestive problems. And the company also warns that for the health of the dog, you need to combine wet and dry food. The package contains instructions on how to introduce food into the pet's diet so that it adapts to new food for itself.

Among wet feeds, it can be noted Pedigree for adult dogs (with veal and liver, jelly). It contains meat, offal, cereals, beet pulp, vitamins. The manufacturer assures that this food will give the dog vitality, heal his coat and skin, and improve digestion. In the "Treats" section, biscuit bones, which use chicken, lamb, and beef, are considered a popular product.

And also this product has specially added calcium, which supports healthy bones, and also Omega-3. This is a 200 gram sachet that you can treat to an adult Labrador, for example.

For miniature

And this category of pets is presented with a complete feed with beef. Pellets are used less, and their density is different, just to make it easier for small breed dogs to eat food. It contains bird meal, rice, corn, wheat, meat meal, animal fat and more. The product is well fortified, due to which, according to the manufacturer, the pet's immunity can be increased.

Wet (liquid) food is popular feed with beef and vegetables in sauce... The composition, in addition to the standard ingredients, contains zinc and linoleic acid, which are important for the dog's skin and coat. The composition of the feed is represented by components with excellent absorption, there is a lot of fiber in the feed for a comfortable digestion. The product is used as a "tasty treat" for small breed dogs Pedigree Jumbone Mini tasty bone - chewing sticks, which clean the dog's teeth well, gently massage his gums. The composition contains beef and chicken liver, herbs and plant extracts.

Types of food for puppies

The manufacturer also worried about the diet of the babies. There are probably no breeders who do not understand the importance of separating the rations of an adult dog and a puppy. For example, for puppies of all breeds, Pedigree is a complete chicken feed. During the period when babies are growing very quickly, they need special nutrition with minerals and vitamins, a special, complete composition. You can buy packaging in 0.6 kg, 2.2 kg, as well as 13 kg.

This product, by the way, is marked with the Roskachestvo mark. It guarantees the protection of the dog's immunity, the health of his teeth, skin, coat, comfortable digestion, as well as healthy joints. Wet food for puppies from 1 month can be with lamb or beef. The product contains cereals, oil, beet pulp, vitamins and minerals. Food is sold in bags of 85 g.

If you feel like pampering your puppy, you can get the Pedigree Tasty Minis with added chicken. This option is very good for training and encouraging the baby. It contains a lot of calcium to strengthen the bones and teeth of the puppy. Lockable packaging, so you don't have to worry about accidentally spilling product. This product can be fed to puppies 4-18 months old.

The product Pedigree "First Complementary Food", a large package (not 15 kg, but 4.3, also economically), is also in great demand. A three-week-old baby is no longer enough breast milk, so it's time to introduce complementary foods. The granules mix with warm water, swell, and are easy for babies to eat. This nutrition should be offered to the puppy before the mother's milk, so that he can feel the difference, and so that saturation occurs faster. Then he will painlessly give up breast milk.

Review overview

What do dog owners say about the brand, how they explain their choice - this is one of the most weighty arguments when searching for the optimal food. The following are the most common comments you see in reviews (if you put them together):

  • feed cheap (both dry, and wet, and a spider), the composition is far from ideal, but as an option for supporting the main diet is quite suitable;
  • ruler products interesting, you can find dog "snacks" that even have a healing effect;
  • veterinarians are not particularly fond of this food (as well as most of the economic products);
  • there are a lot of sales, feed stocks, in economic terms, its benefits are almost undeniable;
  • not an option for kids, problems with digestion may arise - unless it is included in the diet from time to time, not to be done with the main food;
  • suitable for sheltersbecause for selected dogs, overexposed dogs, a better quality product is almost an unrealistic option;
  • there are products that are already in another segment, but also with a half-secret composition, using dyes, which shows the relativity of many assessment categories and classes (premium and economy do not necessarily differ significantly from each other).

Pedigree is a popular food, due to its availability and price, it is predictably in demand. You can look for compromise solutions: sticking to a natural diet (using pure products), add Pedigree products as "desserts" that will not form the basis of the dog's nutrition, but will successfully complement it.
