How to stop a dog from chewing on everything?
A dog in a house is a friend, faithful and sincere, attached to a person and ready to serve him. It is a joy for many years and pleasant chores. True, these troubles are not always harmless. If the dog chews on everything, the owners grab the head, scold the dog, but they rarely realize who is to blame for such pet mischief. And the fault lies with the owner himself.
Why do dogs chew on everything?
There are several reasons leading to the fact that in the absence of the owner (and sometimes with him), the dog gnaws what comes under his teeth.
The first possible reason for such hooliganism is that the dog is not accustomed to the place.
She should have her own bed, her own rug or rug, where he should be while the owners are not at home. From the very beginning it is worth explaining to the dog that in the absence of the owners, he must be in his place: you can go to the bowl of food, but he cannot wander around the house, looking for something to shred.
Someone may think such a restriction is wild: the dog is literally tied to the couch, a step to the right and a step to the left is already punished. But this is not savagery and not cruelty, but training the dog to the rules that regulate his relations with the owners, and which organize his own safety. And if the dog goes to the bath, takes out the washing powder and pats it - poisoning is assured.
But so that the dog does not get bored in his place, he needs to be taken. Regular dog toys.
And this is also a master's omission, if the toys are not left to the dog.
He has a tendency to gnaw, this is normal, but it is also normal for a dog to know what to chew and what not. Toys exist for this, so that the dog can hone bickering.
Suitable as toys:
- small balls, always made of hard rubber;
- toys made of leather, hooves, tendons;
- special game bones.
If you thought old stuffed animals, newspapers, and unnecessary clothing would pass for pet toys, you are wrong. Firstly, the dog will cope with them very quickly, but he will want to chew and gnaw again, so he will go in search of a “new victim”. Secondly, shredded soft toys and newspapers are still a sight to behold, the cleaning will be serious.
So, a dog needs tough toys without filler. They should not succumb to the dog's teeth: you can gnaw, slightly deform them, but the dog will not be able to shred them into small pieces. The dog makes stuffed meat out of soft toys, and most importantly, she can swallow the filler, and this is already very dangerous.
What else can the owner be guilty of is that after the deed the dog was not punished. And this is an obligatory educational move. Scratching things for a dog can become a way of relaxation, it quickly turns into a habit from which it is difficult to wean a pet. If the owner offered a toy, and more than once, and the dog again takes up the old one, you will have to scold him, and also slap him lightly with a newspaper on a soft place. It's not about hurting the dog, but about making it understand that the owner is angry and why he is doing it.
Finally, sometimes things gnawed by a dog are a reproach towards a not very neat owner. If they are scattered, it is worth taking a closer look at the order in the house. More than once, cases have been described when a woman left home for a while, a man could not cope with a full-fledged cleaning, and a dog, accustomed to order, thus (squabbling things) protested.
Methods for correcting behavior
Is it worth it to be angry with a young dog, which has so much energy and strength, if, out of boredom, she found no other occupation for herself than to chop the owner's things.
Remember: do not offer your puppy an alternative, he will not stop chewing on everything.
To stop your dog from chewing on things, ruining furniture and wallpaper, there are proven methods that must be followed.
- Go to the nearest pet store, buy a couple of toys for the dog and teach him to play only with them. Praise the dog for frolicking with the things intended for this, scold for deviations to the side.
- Use special sprays. Theoretically, you can use the power of the smell: special sprays are sold in zoo pharmacies, the composition of which has such a negative effect on the dog that it does not fit into the corner where the spray smell is noticeable. It is better to check with your veterinarian which specific product to buy.
- Apply citrus essential oil. If you buy essential oil of orange and grapefruit and apply it to the corners of furniture, walls, or anywhere in the house that the dog does not spare, he will begin to bypass it. For people, such smells are pleasant (because you yourself will not suffer), but animals do not tolerate the smell of citrus fruits, for them it is harsh.
- Establish training for teams. Finally, use intelligent weaning techniques. The dog must clearly distinguish between forbidding commands - "fu" and "no". These limit words are pronounced in a stern voice with an appropriate facial expression. They need to be said every time the dog decided to ruffle the master's slippers or arrange for street shoes to be tested with his teeth. The upbringing process requires rigor: no playful form and meaningful intonations - the dog will clearly catch this and will not refuse to play with you. The owner of a naughty puppy squeezes the withers and says "no" or "fu" in a strict commanding voice. It is no longer possible for an adult dog to squeeze the withers - this humiliates her.
- Walk the dog a lot. Sometimes it’s just that. It happens that a pet chews on one person's shoes or starts dragging his shoes, thereby showing that he yearns for walks. This can be done by puppies who, due to their age, are still inconsistent and wayward. Of course, it is impossible to praise the dog for such a peculiar resourcefulness, but you need to listen to such "requests".If the dog has frolicked enough on the street, if he is satiated with communicating with the owner, he will not have the strength for domestic destructive activity.
- Give him soft bones. So the animal will be able to satisfy its own instinct of the hunter, and your things will remain intact.
- Make sure you successfully resist worming your dog. There is an opinion that it is the worms that cause concern to the animal, and it expresses it in excessive bickering. Tablets for helminths should be given to the pet according to the schedule received by the veterinarian (usually once every 3 months).
- Train your dog not to be afraid to be alone at home. This is an important psychological moment based on building a "master-dog" trust scheme. Many dogs are simply bored, they are afraid of the forced loneliness, so they start to break down with bickering. The more you communicate with the animal, the more you show your joy when you come home, the faster it realizes that it is okay to be alone sometimes. Leaving for work, talk to the puppy, and explain: "I'll be back soon, behave yourself, here are your toys." And when you come home, praise your cleanliness and obedience.
- Walk with the dog according to the regime. If the dog knows that it's time to walk soon, he will be calm and will not chew on everything.
Finally, take responsibility for all educational activities yourself. Do not make indulgences, be strict in your requirements. In the meantime, the puppy is growing and can commit pranks, do not leave valuables in its access zone. Provocation is not a method of education.
What methods don't work?
The very first wrong method is delayed punishment. If you decide to scold the dog a few hours after you found the torn shoes, there will be no sense in your lectures. The animal simply will not understand why the punishment for an obvious violation came so late, and will not be able to adequately perceive it.
Tactics such as waiting for the dog to mature will not work either. Many owners "pierce" on it. Human logic: the dog is still small, stupid, all the puppies tear and gnaw things, nothing, will outgrow. It is immediately evident that the dog was brought in without any understanding that it needs to be brought up.
Lack of punishment is a serious blunder, you cannot raise an intelligent, obedient, well-bred dog in this way.
Common mistakes of owners
The mistake of the owners is that they perceive the physiological need of the dog for bickering as self-indulgence. You need to clearly understand: there is an age when the pet begins to cut teeth, this gives him discomfort, and therefore he begins to gnaw everything he sees. There is no need to scold him for the fact that his gums itch, but leave an alternative way of discharging for teething teeth.
Let him gnaw toys, let him do it often and a lot - they do not scold him for this. But remove all valuable things from the dog's field of vision, at this age he is a weak master of his instincts.
Physical punishment is the most common mistake... It's one thing to lightly slap the doggy on the bottom with a newspaper (and just for the cause), and quite another to beat the dog. Fear, humiliation, resentment and revenge are what such instructive methods are fraught with. Beating an animal inflicts moral trauma on it, and with it, no obedience matters.
Another mistake of the owner is the alternative for bickering in the form of old shoes. Since the dog likes to gnaw his shoes so much, the owner decides to offer him a replacement - to give those that are no longer a pity. But shoes, even the most decrepit, should be inviolable, and the puppy should understand this right away.
Respect, education, severity and attention - that's what a dog needs. Don't beat, be consistent in your demands. Finally, when starting a dog, understand that he needs your time and energy. And then she will not be out of boredom, lack of upbringing and clear requirements to gnaw on everything.
