Having received an offer from one of the firms in your city or region, which responded specifically to your announcement of cooperation, but realizing that you will have to leave on this, behave correctly and carefully. Rudeness and haste can hurt you. Life is such that you may still have to work together: the requirements for the applicant and the conditions for future work will change.

What reasons can be used?

The reasons why the applicant refuses to interview the employer are as follows.

  • Deterioration in health. There is no need to write down the details, up to the exact diagnosis, but it is not superfluous to make it clear that you will not be able to work in this position for reasons such as loss of working capacity due to such and such an injury.
  • Family circumstances, not tolerating any postponement of the date of the proposed business meeting. Anything happens in life. For example, some misfortune or incident happened to one of your family members, you should hurry to help him. However, this should not be abused.

Do not refuse a meeting just because, say, you have an entertaining trip planned, a trip out of town, which may well be postponed. Unscrupulous applicants who maliciously violate the rules and etiquette are simply put on a life-long blacklist - as long as a particular applicant is alive or "alive" the company that ran into his unjustified refusal.

If this is a group of firms that are partners or work under the supervision of a common PJSC, LLC or other founder / structure, then what one company knows will be learned overnight by another.

  • You have found another vacancy. Do not in any way touch upon the financial issue, do not bring obvious and unflattering comparisons. An appeal to someone else's "rates" never disposed to the possibility of repeated, different further cooperation. But contact with a specific representative (head of a department, HR manager, etc.) and / or the company as a whole will be immediately broken. But sometimes you can hint about finding another place of work - closer to your residence address.
  • Change of the physical address of a company or its subdivision: it will take a long time for you to get to the renewed (or new) place of work. Explain that you live too far away and that moving to a new place of work is not part of your plans today. Driving to the workplace through traffic jams, obstructed traffic for three hours - with a rise for this at dawn - is obvious. Before ending the conversation, ask if there is another, similar vacancy closer to you, but from the same company.
  • This vacancy does not interfere with your activity at allthat you would like to pay close attention to for at least the next few years. Make it clear that, unfortunately, you are not ready to do it: no education, no experience, etc.
  • You are not satisfied with specific aspects: there is no readiness for frequent business trips, production that is too harmful to health (there are contraindications for doctors), a non-standard schedule (for example, night work) and / or some other points.

Having clearly understood your position, the employer, the representative of the company, the firm will select an alternative candidate for the still open position. Remember that even in the case of your initially positive answer, the sooner you reliably inform why you are still forced to pass by the position offered to you, the more adequately your refusal will be perceived.

How long does it take to refuse?

It is necessary to refuse the invitation when such a need has become clear, but the applicant has already agreed, as soon as possible. Even when something is not completely clear to you, but you forgot to find out everything completely when talking on the phone, immediately analyze the proposal of the company that has established contact with you. Perhaps some information has escaped your attention. When everything becomes clear, you may still have to say your "no". And the sooner this is done, the more profitable you will present yourself from this position.

It is categorically impossible to refuse for a few minutes, less than an hour before the time of the appointment. After all, the representative or the head of this company spent his time on you, it seems that contact has been established, and you are grossly violating his plans. Have respect for other people's work, employment: from your lack of punctuality, lack of assembly, the business of a company that has not decided on time with a suitable candidate for its new employees will suffer in one way or another. And you, in turn, make yourself look bad.

The ideal option is to refuse on the same day if the meeting is rescheduled for tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or on a specific date. And at the same hour, if you made an appointment at 9 am, say, at 2 pm.

Ways to cancel a business meeting

Politeness coupled with punctuality is your green light in finding and finding a specific job that suits you. It is also useful to know what means of communication can be used.

  • Telephone call. This is a traditional, “warm”, “lively” way to negotiate. At all times, starting almost with the invention of the telephone as a means of communication at a distance, this method is in great demand. If you want to cancel an appointment, you'd better call right away and arrange. However, have a clear idea of ​​how, without deviating from a benevolent, but businesslike style, without familiarity and familiarity, but with proper subordination, you will build a dialogue about what exactly should be said, tell your failed employer.
  • Email. It makes sense to use this method if you are sure that the representatives of the company where you tried to get a job, but were forced to refuse them, has a system of instant notifications about new letters. They are not obliged to respond to your letter instantly - they have dozens, hundreds of requests a day from other applicants. But this method is not bad if you cannot get through to an employee of this company (the phone is busy, the person does not pick up the phone, is not present, etc.). Write when they do not answer the call - an alternative way out.
  • Messenger... The most "advanced" way. Does not work with direct landline or toll-free (starting with 8-800) numbers. However, if a company representative indicated his working federal cell number (starting with 8-9 ...), you can try to find it in the following messengers: Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram, Skype, VKontakte, Twitter and several similar ones. It is often better to leave a free voice message: a “live” messenger is a worthy alternative to calling a mobile or office number.
  • SMS... A message sent as an SMS is the last measure, when other options (dialing, voice or text message, letter) did not work on time, the deadlines are tight, but you still need to “shout out” to a company representative. Do not use this option as your first choice.

    Finally, be gentle and friendly. You can apply the following phrases.

    1. "I'm sorry, but I have to refuse ..." ("Unfortunately, I cannot accept your offer").
    2. "Thank you for your attention, but the circumstances are such that, alas, I cannot come."
    3. “I realize that I have created an inconvenience for you and yet there is no possibility to appear at the indicated time.”
    4. “Perhaps in the future we will come to an agreement. Today, I’m unlikely to accept your offer. I wish you to find a worthy candidate for this job. "
    5. “I am afraid that I will have to refuse. And yet it is. "
    6. "Thank you for the invitation, and yet I will decline."

    An applicant recommended “by acquaintance” must clearly and unobtrusively explain why he suddenly changed his mind, refused to cooperate this time.

    The address at the beginning, before the name, should begin politely, with "Dear ...". Option - "Dear (name), I greet you." Or in a simple way - "Good day, (name)." No "Hello", this option is possible with rare exceptions when the company provides for a not very strict style of communication (judging by the advertising of the created image), but for high-ranking officials still use a more traditional business address.

    At the end of a letter, voice message, or when you call, wish the representative of the company good luck (in the sense of finding a new, more suitable candidate). Wish "All the best" can supplement or replace the same phrase "I wish you good luck."
