Narrow wardrobes in the bedroom: varieties and tips for choosing
To furnish a room, you need furniture of different sizes, including narrow ones. Despite its size, such a wardrobe can be equally beautiful and comfortable.
Peculiarities
Narrow cabinets usually mean 40-45 cm wide cabinets. Due to their elongated rectangular shape, they are also called pencil cases. The depth usually does not exceed 50 cm, and in most cases it is even less (35-40 cm). If you increase the depth, then it will be difficult to get the content when the space is narrow. The height depends on the cabinet design:
- for floor-standing ones, it varies from 120 to 220 cm;
- for hinged (wall) products, the height usually does not exceed 150 cm, since such bulky furniture, and even filled with things, will not withstand fastenings.
Most narrow cabinets have their own advantages:
- save space, especially if the bedroom is small;
- varied design of facades - you can choose an option that is suitable in appearance;
- several possibilities of internal filling - with the correct layout, such a cabinet can be made quite roomy;
- you can use both a free-standing version and a module in a furniture set;
- due to its narrowness, the product can be installed almost anywhere in the bedroom: in the corner, near the wall, in a niche or wall next to the window;
- shallow depth provides access to any, even hard-to-reach corner of the interior space.
Narrow models also have disadvantages. Such furniture cannot completely replace an ordinary wide wardrobe, even if you put several of them in one row. Large items cannot fit here. Therefore, to store them, you need to determine another place. A tall pencil case will also be less stable. To protect yourself and your loved ones, you must definitely attach such furniture to the wall.
Internal filling
How the cabinet will look from the inside depends on its purpose. When drawing up any furniture project, first of all, you need to carefully consider its capacity and functionality. Comfort is important in the bedroom, and for this it is necessary to correctly place all the available things. A narrow cabinet can be used to store:
- clothes, shoes and accessories (wardrobe);
- home textiles (bed linen, etc.);
- educational and fictional literature (book);
- equipment for work or hobby;
- toys.
Narrow wardrobes are especially needed in a bedroom if it is used not only for sleeping and relaxing, but also for solving work tasks, learning, creativity or even games. Then they can accommodate a lot of little things that should always be at hand.
The pencil case can be of two types.
- Open, in the form of a rack. Plus - it is convenient to quickly find things. The downside is the lack of protection from dust, ultraviolet radiation, etc.
- Closed, with one large or several smaller facades.
Among the internal filling in the cabinet, the following elements can be distinguished.
- Hanger bar... With a depth of 50 cm, it can hold up to ten hangers. Of course, this does not apply to outerwear. The booms can be arranged in two levels to save space.
- Drawers of different heights... Usually used for laundry and other small items. Their small size does not require additional dividers.
- Shelves (regular and retractable mesh). Ideal for stacking folded clothing, bedding and other textiles.
For shelves, both in a closed cabinet and in a rack, it is better to use baskets or containers.
They help to compactly store and sort things. And if the closet is tall, you can separate the top and bottom shelves to accommodate boxes of shoes or items that are less frequently used.
Material and design
A modern wardrobe, despite its size, should:
- be convenient to use, strong and durable;
- look attractive;
- have an affordable cost.
All these characteristics depend on what materials its components are made of: facades and frame (bottom, top, sides and shelves). The most affordable material is laminated chipboard (or chipboard). In addition, this material has a fairly large selection of colors. But for use in a bedroom, its quality is important, as well as the availability of documents for compliance with permissible standards for the content of harmful substances. Both facades and a frame are made of chipboard.
The next in cost is MDF. It is used for the production of facades and visible sidewalls, and in order to reduce the cost of the product, everything else is made of chipboard. MDF has more possibilities: here you can make frame and curved facades, milling, rounding at the edges instead of the edge.
In terms of its strength, the material is almost identical to the previous one. Various film coatings are possible: textured, smooth, glossy, matte, plain or patterned.
The most expensive option is solid wood. The strength and appearance depends on the type of wood. The product will be heavy and more capricious to changes in humidity than coated with MDF or chipboard. But here the respectable appearance is more appreciated - with a woody texture and natural colors. For more modern options wooden cabinets are painted and the facades are stylized in shape.
Deserve special attention display cabinets. The frame for such facades can be made not only of the above materials, but also of metal. The insert can be glass (transparent, mirror, tinted or satin) or plastic (colored or translucent). If desired, the shelves in the display cabinet can be replaced with glass ones.For such doors, you should choose the handles more carefully or replace them with another opening system.
In addition to the materials of the frame and facades, fittings also deserve close attention. With modern hinges, the doors open easily and close silently. The same applies to pull-out elements: it is better to choose them with a closer and quiet, smooth running.
Good steel fittings guarantee a long cabinet life. This is definitely not worth saving on.
Interesting examples in the interior
The simplest technique that can be applied when arranging furniture in a bedroom is symmetrical arrangement. For example, narrow cabinets can be positioned on the sides of a bed, window or desk - so they will highlight the central part of the room without cluttering it. The same applies to shelving cabinets.
Open shelves, located at a convenient level, can successfully replace bedside tables: you should set an alarm clock on them, fix lamps or put a book to read before bed. The cabinet does not have to be made completely, one or two shelves are enough, which will unload the structure with a dull facade.
To hide tall cabinets, they can be placed in the corners of the room. This will also be helped by the absence of conspicuous decorative details and neutral colors, selected in the same scale with the surrounding objects.
Narrow wardrobes do not have to be set separately, they look great together with other furniture. If the pencil case is used as a module, it is important to maintain the uniformity of the style of all parts of the furniture wall. But the color of the facades of such an ensemble can be either the same or contrasting (if appropriate).
Often, narrow pencil cases become part of the design that decorates the head of the bed - this is not only beautiful, but also practical. They look equally good in bedrooms for all ages. In a room intended for a child or teenager, such a closet will surely have a place for various toys or textbooks.
Even with small cabinets, you can change the room. For example, if the room is narrow and dark, you can add light to it and visually expand the area. For this, only light colors and surfaces with a reflective effect should be present in the interior - for example, mirrors on the facades of cabinets, located in pairs along one of the walls.
