The bedroom is the most important part of an apartment or house, as it is created for relaxation and rejuvenation. Everything in it should tune in to peace and relaxation, while meeting the owner's taste preferences. Here, the color of the walls, the texture of the finish, the convenience of the furniture and, of course, the quality of lighting matter. What types of lighting can be used in the bedroom and what are their features, we will describe in this article.

What should be the lighting?

Bedroom fixtures can vary in many ways. It's not only about the taste preferences of buyers, but also about the purpose of the devices: directly for lighting, to create a special atmosphere, for reading, etc. Bedroom lighting should fulfill its main function - lighting. You should be comfortable dressing in this room, finding the things you need, reading books and magazines, and doing makeup in the dark.

The light shouldn't be too bright. Always a powerful light in a room serving as a rest room will at least be inappropriate. The intensity of illumination should be easily regulated, since this parameter greatly affects the psychological state of a person.

Sometimes you want to be alone with yourself in the twilight, and sometimes, on the contrary, you want the space to shine as intensely as possible.

The luminaires should be within arm's reach and turn on without undue effort. This is especially important for bedside sconces, for example. If this is not possible in your case, then purchase lamps with a remote control.

In the bedroom, you should not hang modern lamps in which a naked lamp is clearly visible.... This is more suitable for a hallway or a loft-style workshop, while the bedroom assumes the presence of a variety of fabric caps, mosaic lampshades or simply graceful shades that gently diffuse light into the surrounding space.

Accommodation in the interior

If you are the owner of a compact bedroom, then the lamps should not be huge, otherwise they will emphasize the small size of the room. In large rooms, you need to illuminate every corner, which means that zone and spot lighting may well coexist with one large light source.

The size of most bedrooms still allows you to combine several types of lighting. First of all, a central lamp is installed, which serves as the brightest light source. Local lighting can highlight several objects:

  • it is best to put the same light sources on both sides by the bed;
  • mirror in the bedroom;
  • work area, such as a desk

Sources of decorative illumination are also used whenever possible. Night lamps, lamps in the form of flowers, LED strips, etc. fall into this category. The dim and diffused light they create is also very important - it creates a magical and unique atmosphere, brings comfort and coziness to the room.

It is important to plan a lighting system at the beginning of a renovation, as changing it in the process or at the end can be problematic. Think in advance where you would like to see the light sources or consult an interior designer.

Varieties of lighting fixtures

The bedroom gives a wide scope for the owner's imagination, since the light sources here can be varied.

Chandeliers

If the ceilings in the room are not very high, then the chandeliers are mounted directly on it. If the distance allows, then the chandelier is hung on a chain. The height from the floor must be more than 2 meters. With this landing, the light is scattered more widely. When the bulbs are directed towards the ceiling, shadows appear on it, which does not always look good. To avoid this phenomenon, you need to pay attention to the design of the lamps. They are able to act as not just the main, but the only light source in the bedroom, but this option cannot be called successful.

Hanging chandeliers are susceptible to dust pollution, so they need wet cleaning. It is easy to break them during children's games, and the transportation of the device to the house should be as accurate as possible. When installing a chandelier, there are certain inconveniences with wiring.

Sconce

Glass and plastic wall lights are often used in bedroom designs. The lamps in them can be switched on in different ways - using a switch or a cord on its body. The second option can usually be seen by the bed or near the mirrors.

Sconces involve the installation of not too bright lamps, otherwise individual parts of the device may overheat and even melt.

Floor lamp

This is a pedestal lamp that can be placed directly on the floor in a convenient place. Usually, for stability, it is equipped with a tripod or a solid part that prevents it from falling. They are good not only in the bedroom by the bed, but also near the armchair with a coffee table. There are models of floor lamps that are equipped with a mini-table. Turning on is usually done by means of a button located on the luminaire itself, or on the wire that powers it.

Floor lamps are optimally suited for reading books, since due to the design features of the device, the light falls just downward. The variety of styles allows you to find a specific floor lamp for any interior. Also a plus is that a not very powerful light bulb is enough for this additional light source, which means it saves energy. The disadvantage of such a lamp is its relatively weak stability. The floor lamp may fall if there are playful pets or children in the apartment.

Night lights

They focus light on a ceiling or wall, creating a soft, warm atmosphere. Usually shades of nightlights have a dull color of yellow, green or white. Easy to connect, they have a variety of unusual shapes, because most often such a light source serves as a "watchman" in the children's room.

Point

This type of lighting is widely used when installing stretch ceilings. Each light bulb is small, but as a group, they create a spectacular ambience of diffused light in the room, and also allow you to simulate ornate structures on the ceiling, making the interior exclusive. There are options for 220V lamps, as well as 12V - the latter come with a power supply.

On ropes

Cable or track lights - model popular in youth interiors. Such suspensions are a constant companion of high-tech or loft interiors. Such interiors are not often used for bedroom decoration, but such a modern option is still worth mentioning. They are good for large bedrooms with zoning, various ceilings and high ceilings. On a cable from wall to wall, a number of rotary lamps are attached, a tension line is drawn - and a stylish attribute of a modern home is ready.

Tabletop

They can create both diffused and directional light, depending on the model and its design features. A writing desk is the main place for a table lamp, but some people put it on bedside tables as well.

How to choose?

Not everyone thinks about how economical the use of this or that lamp will be. The most affordable are spot lamps and those with an E14 or E27 base. If you want to save on electricity, then the lamp you choose should fit them. When reading the instructions for the luminaire, pay attention to lamps of what maximum power can be used with it. If this information is not followed, the light source may overheat.

Now let's look at the choice of luminaires in terms of their function and location.

Main light

As we said above, the main light source is a chandelier. For many of us, it is associated with childhood and comfort, since they were previously present in all apartments. When choosing it, keep in mind that when suspended, the chandelier must be at least 210 cm from the floor.

Instead of one large chandelier, you can use several ceiling lamps located in different parts of the ceiling as the main light.

A point light can even replace a chandelier if there is a lot of it. Many designs of modern stretch ceilings assume a lighting scheme that gives maximum illumination. By the way, in America, many do not use chandeliers, preferring only floor lamps, sconces, etc. This solution is especially appropriate for rooms with a low ceiling, so as not to focus on it.

Light at the head of the bed

It is helped to create table lamps, plafonds hanging from the ceiling, bedside sconces, bedside lamps, long LED strips and spotlights.

According to generally accepted standards, the source should be located at a distance of half a meter from the bedside table and 120–160 cm from the floor. Then its location will not cause discomfort. And, of course, before buying a lamp, you need to make sure that its light will not hit your eyes sharply - models with matte shades that scatter too bright rays are ideal.

Light in the work area or in the reading area

A sconce or floor lamp works well for a chair you like to read in. If reading usually takes place in bed, then a suitable night light is usually placed at the head of the bed. Workplace and computer desk - both an overhead light and a desk lamp should illuminate. If the room has zoning, then this will allow you to do work or read without disturbing the sleep of other family members.

Mirror, dressing table or wardrobe lighting

Small recessed lights are ideal for the closet. At least three lamps are placed next to the mirror: one at the top and one on each side. The dressing table is usually lit from two sides.

Night illumination

The ideal option is not too bright and low-lying or floor-standing built-in light sources that turn on easily in the dark. This is convenient for entering or leaving the bedroom without disturbing the rest of the household.

Decorative light, popular today, helps to create zoning of space, as well as to focus attention on any part of the interior, for example, a picture or a set of them. This is helped by sconces, special lamps with directional light, spot lighting and more. Built-in light sources, specially selected for your interior, provide the most room for creativity. As a budget option, LED strips can be used for this purpose, which are powered both from the mains and from batteries.

The peculiarities of decorative light are that it can be multi-colored, can specially create delicate shadows, rotate or flicker like a starry sky, or "run" like on a beautiful neon sign. Not everyone wants peace and quiet to always reign in their bedroom, therefore, as additional lighting, they often mount unusual original lamps like a touchscreen from nightclubs or disco balls. All of them, of course, must have their own power supply and not be adjacent to soft light sources.

Whatever lighting you choose for the bedroom, it should invariably bring convenience and coziness to it, so that, if you wish, you can always fully relax from the hustle and bustle of the working day and have a good night's sleep.
