Such a piece of furniture as a bedspread initially performed a more practical function - it served for warmth. By the 18th century in France, this detail became more and more elegant and attractive, until it also acquired a decorative function. What is the significance of bedspreads today, what materials are they made of?

Features and purpose

A bedspread in the bedroom is a type of home textile that is laid on top of a made bed. The product allows you to protect it from dust and dirt, prying eyes. A properly chosen bedspread undoubtedly decorates the bedroom and can even become its accent. It gives the room completeness, becomes part of the style. Finally, the blanket can also be used as a cover during the afternoon siesta or if it gets cold under the covers.

Based on the functions described above, we can conclude that the product should be suitable in size, be combined with the style of the bedroom, be attractive in appearance and pleasant to use, withstand many washings, while maintaining quality and appearance.

Types and materials

All existing products can be divided into 2 groups:

  • those that are sewn from natural materials (quilted woolen);
  • products made of artificial analogs (a blanket made of artificial fur).

The first ones are environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic, however, their service life is shorter, after washing natural fabrics shrink... Analogs made of artificial fabrics do not have these disadvantages, but they can accumulate static electricity, sometimes they are not so pleasant to the touch.However, we will immediately make a reservation that such a division is conditional. Most of the products are combination bedspreads. That is, natural threads are added to artificial threads and vice versa. This allows you to improve the performance properties of the bedspread, as well as significantly reduce the cost of the product.

The most common types of bedspreads are:

  • cotton fabrics, as well as their mixture with artificial fabrics, as a result of which a densely woven fabric with a smooth surface is obtained (poplin, viscose, calico, percale);
  • cotton, woolen and mixed fabrics with a rough surface (jacquard, tapestry, pique);
  • natural or synthetic (as well as mixed options) fabrics with a fleecy surface (velor, faux fur with short and long pile, plush, velvet);
  • synthetic fabrics made of polyester fibers (velsoft, fleece, microfiber);
  • silk and printed artificial fabrics (satin, brocade, polyester).

Cotton and silk products are distinguished by their visual appeal, practicality, and environmental friendliness. The fleecy and velvet bedspreads look no less attractive, but they attract dust and are not recommended for use by allergy sufferers. To clean them, as a rule, you have to use a dry cleaning service.

And if you often lie on such bedspreads, then over time "bald spots" are formed on them, which significantly reduces the aesthetic value of the product.

Colors

In Soviet society, one of the most important criteria for choosing a bedspread was its maximum correspondence to curtains and curtains. If possible curtains and bedspreads were sewn from the same fabrics, however, today designers recognize this as bad manners.

You can select a product that, in texture, shade or pattern, will be combined with the rest of the textiles in the bedroom, or look harmoniously with furniture, flooring. However, contrasting combinations are no less interesting. It is important to mix cold shades with cold shades, and warm shades with warm ones. If this color rule is not followed, the room does not look in the same style, but evokes associations with a thoughtless pile of things.

When choosing a product with a pattern, remember that the size of the latter should correspond to the dimensions of the room... Large drawings in a small bedroom will overwhelm her. Excessive "variegation", saturation with ornaments in this case will also be ridiculous, visually overload and reduce the bedroom. It is important to combine the print on the bedspread with other existing "geometry" in the room. For example, if there are squares and rectangles on the walls (for example, in the form of a pattern on wallpaper or picture frames), then the bedspread should repeat this print or not have it at all.

White and pastel shades, blue bedspread and its variations (for example, turquoise, blue), pastel and coffee, brown shades, gray colors can be considered widespread and universal.

Depending on the patterns, bedspreads can take several forms:

  • rectangular - is a rectangle, for which the product is also called a bedspread;
  • bilateral - the feature of the product is that both sides of it are front, if necessary, you can quickly change the style of the bedroom by simply turning the bedspread over;
  • covers - the bed linen and mattress are completely covered, while the legs of the bed remain open;
  • with oversight - is a wide frill that frames the product around the perimeter, while the valance can be strict (has opposite folds in the corners), draped (draperies around the perimeter), pleated (instead of draperies - wide pleats).

Dimensions (edit)

To determine the size of the bedspread, you need to know the size of the bed. Please measure your length, width and height before purchasing. The obtained parameters are the minimum size of the bedspread... Ideally, this figure should be added another 10-15 cm on each side. If the bed has a headboard, then on its side it is possible not to add the indicated numbers to the bedspread.

If you need a bedspread that falls beautifully to the floor, then add to the basic parameters 1 time in width and 2 times in height add the height of the bed when tucked in. It is worth adding up to 15 cm in length if you want the product to lie on the floor. Models are sewn in several standard sizes. For a double bed, these are bedspreads 180x200 cm or 160x200 cm, for 1.5 sleeping beds - 140x200 cm.There are also very large products - 240x260 cm, single beds - 100x200 cm or 90x200 cm, for children - 90x100 cm or 90x160 cm.

Style solutions

In classic rooms, the repetition of bedspreads and other textiles in the room is quite common. This primarily concerns the curtains in the bedroom. Usually, products are selected from dense tapestry or velor in classic shades. If a print is used, then these are noble ornaments. This analogy looks good in rustic interiors. However, it is better to opt for cotton products. Vegetable or animal print, scenes of village life are welcome.

A delicate bedspread with flounces emphasizes the romance of the room. Pay attention to the length of the product. If the bedspread reached the floor, it would look old-fashioned and pretentious. In this case, the length of the bedspread emphasizes the dynamism, lightness and modernity of the mistress of the bedroom. For bedrooms in a modern style, as well as in the spirit of minimalism, you can consider bedspread-cover option... It is sewn strictly according to the size of the mattress, it may look like a cocoon that covers the bed.

As for the design of the product, both monochromatic and printed models will equally harmoniously fit into such an interior.

However, the cover is an excellent solution not only for minimalist designs, but also for carved wood beds, original design models. In a word, that furniture, which in itself is the accent of the room. It will be successful to use the product in the form of a canopy bed cover, soft protruding details. For classic or aristocratic bedrooms, massive beds with a wide mattress, a product with a valance may be the best option. There is a stereotype that such models are only splendor and airy, although there are also denser, smooth models.

Bedrooms in the spirit of shabby, country, provence or vintage require more democratic options from deliberately natural fabrics... An excellent solution might be knitted model, resembling, rather, a large blanket. Snow-white bedspreads with patterns, embroidery or fringe will also become a harmonious accessory in such premises. In this case, ruffles and folds emphasize the luxury of the room and bring notes of solemnity.

It should be remembered that these details visually increase the sleeping space, so a ruffled bedspread may not be suitable for medium to small bedrooms.

Ruches and flounces will also perfectly cope with the task of making the room more delicate, light, romantic. Usually, this technique is resorted to if a standard bedroom needs to be turned into a girl's. It is advisable to supplement the bedspread with several pillows of different sizes. Versatile, but at the same time stylish is considered the blanket is white. It brings to the bedroom the nobility of the bedrooms of aristocrats, freshness, visually expands the space. And so that white does not look boring, you can choose a product with pinches, imitation of a coach tie, etc.

Of course, you will have to carefully monitor the purity and whiteness - leaving the bedspread in a yellow or gray shade will instantly make the entire bedroom look messy and old-fashioned. A model using the patchwork technique (sewing with patches) will help to create the most comfortable and cozy atmosphere. It is especially relevant in eclectic, vintage, rustic rooms. Such a product will become a "highlight" of the bedroom, but the latter should not be overloaded.

How to choose?

In general, when choosing a product for a bed, you should be guided by the following criteria: size, quality and appearance compliance with your personal wishes. The dimensions of the product must correspond to the dimensions of the mattress or bed. Don't buy a model that is too short, if this is not a design solution for the interior of the bedroom. Too long will drag along the floor and look sloppy. Usually, short models are tucked under the mattress to showcase the unusual legs of the bed.

It is also important to consider the age, lifestyle and character of the owner of the room. So, in the bedroom of an adult woman, a pale pink bedspread with bows and ruffles may be inappropriate. In a beige bedroom, the product can be selected both bright and pastel. The peculiarities of the location of the room relative to the cardinal points are also taken into account. If the bedroom "looks" to the north, it is recommended to bring warmth and comfort with the help of textiles of pleasant textures and warm colors. For southern rooms, you can choose cooler colors.

Even before buying, you should decide whether your bedspread will be washed in a washing machine or you will have to go to a dry cleaner to clean it. For families with small children or pets, it is best to choose bedspreads that are not afraid of frequent washings. It is good if the products are not pastel shades, with decor on the surface (beads, brushes). The optimal material is viscose, satin, cotton, as well as their combinations. But tapestry and silk are not the best solution for such families.

An important aspect is the quality of the bedspread. It must not accumulate static electricity or have an unpleasant "artificial" odor. A good thing will be noble to the touch, retain its color and shape, size after washing. The sets that enjoy the well-deserved confidence of buyers are Turkish, Italian (they produce sets with a headboard back), and domestic products. Turkey produces luxury sets; their new bedding sets usually dictate fashion trends for other manufacturers of neighboring countries.

Care and storage

Washing and care in general should be appropriate for the type of fabric and the care instructions on the product label should be followed. It is better not to soak colored and printed products, and it is better to wash colored versions by hand during the first wash, separately from other things. Tapestry can be machine washed (by hand) or dry cleaned. Wrinkles can be ironed out with a non-hot steam iron. It is recommended to steam the front side through cheesecloth.

Satin bedspreads can be washed in hot water up to 95 C. However, if this is a colored product, then the water temperature should not exceed 60 C. It is better to dry without resorting to a tumble dryer. It is allowed to use a steam iron to get rid of folds and creases. Fur bedspreads can be washed in non-hot water, not higher than 30 C. Avoid aggressive compositions and modes of washing, mechanical drying, strong spin. Woolen products are looked after in the same way. To get rid of folds, sometimes it is enough to hang such bedspreads on a rope.

When using an iron, the cover must be moistened.

Examples in the interior

Recall that when choosing a bedspread, one of the criteria should be its compliance with the interior of the bed. In this example, we can see that the main colors are warm pastel shades. At the same time, the bed and other furniture are dark, so a lighter coffee shade will become the basis of the bedspread. Decorative inserts of a brown shade (repeat the color of the bed) and pillows to match them allow him to "make friends" with other colors.

If you take a closer look, it becomes obvious that each pair of pillows repeats the color of one of the bedroom elements - bedspreads, headboards, curtains and armchairs. Thanks to this, a special harmony is achieved, a mood of home comfort and warmth is created.

The next example is an illustration of how a bright unusual bedspread became the accent of a rather calm (and for some, perhaps boring) room and transformed it.

The main condition for the attractiveness of such interiors is one main accent and its small "support" within this room. Please note that the print of the bedspread is repeated in a small picture hanging on the bed. Lighting also helps to create volume and correctly direct attention.

The next example is a successful combination of wallpaper prints on the walls and bedspreads. However, such success and visual harmony are due to the right approach. The color of the wallpaper pattern becomes the basis for the shade of the bedspread, on which an unobtrusive print is also spread. Only with this approach can the luridness of the interior be avoided.

Since we're talking about combining prints, let's turn to another example. The upholstery of the headboard is continued in the bedspread. To avoid the funny effect when everything merges together, pillows help - they are made of other materials, and therefore seem to dilute the space.

In this case, it was possible to swap the products - choose a plain fabric for the headboard and bedspread and decorate the sleeping place with printed pillows.

Another interesting option is how, with the help of the bedspread, they gave the bedroom a finished look, ensured maximum compliance with the chosen style. Before us is an interesting room, decorated in ethnic style. It is quite calm in nature - natural materials, pastel shades. But it is the bright bedspread in the ethnic spirit that gives the room charm, adds "zest". Without it, the bedroom would look dull.
