90s clothing style
Despite the controversy of the era, it was she who brought into fashion many things that are considered cult today - jeans, mini-skirts, lingerie-style dresses and bombers. And modern teenagers, who were born much later, increasingly prefer clothes from the 90s.
Let's remember what the fashion era was at the end of the twentieth millennium.
Features of the era
The way to dress in the 90s is better called not a style, but a new approach to fashion and the choice of clothes. The very principle of creating clothes by designers and creating an image by ordinary people began to change.
The main principle of the era is “to be yourself”. They began to pay much attention to individuality, reflection of the inner world of a person and their own style. It was at this time that the profession of a stylist and image maker appeared, and glossy magazines began to give advice on how to emphasize their individuality.
Specific traits
In the 90s, denim clothing became especially popular - absolutely everyone wore it. These are not only jeans, but also skirts, shorts, sundresses for girls and overalls for both sexes.
It was then that a denim suit was created - trousers and a jacket or jacket, which must be worn together. Moreover, designers have created denim bags, hats and even denim shoes. It is not for nothing that this era is sometimes called "denim".
Also, for the first time, unisex clothing became popular - t-shirts, oversized sweaters, sneakers or other comfortable shoes were worn with jeans.
At the same time, deliberate theatricality and an abundance of bright colors, especially in female images, were in vogue.
More attention was paid not so much to clothing as to the human body.It had to be either pale or very tanned, slender, sometimes even too much, the figure became an integral part of the fashionable bow.
It became obligatory to visit not only the gym, but also the beauty parlor. Cosmetic surgery has become very popular. A cult of supermodels appeared - everyone tried to be equal to Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss.
Since the clothes could hardly surprise anyone, fashionistas began to modify their bodies - to do piercings, tattoos, the style of which is a topic for a separate conversation.
Style of the 90s in Russia
The fashion of the end of the twentieth century in the world and on the territory of the post-Soviet states, and in Russia in particular, has somewhat distinguished itself. What we take to be the fashion of the 90s was popular in America and Europe in the mid 80s.
This is due to the fact that the Iron Curtain fell, and streams of bright outfits rushed to us, which previously could only be obtained from speculators. It was not so important for the inhabitants of the former Soviet Union to follow the world fashion trends as to wear "foreign" clothes.
This period was remembered for jeans-dumplings, leather and denim mini-skirts, blouses and sweaters with wide shoulders, colored leggings, fashion for tracksuits, colorful knitted sweaters, and electronic wristwatches.
Style directions of the era
Grunge
Kurt Cobain and his group Nirvana are considered the founder of the style. They have revolutionized not only the world of music, but also the world of fashion. Their fans, following Kurt, began to wear baggy sweaters, bulky men's trousers (which today we call boyfriend jeans), stretched cardigans, plaid shirts, leather jackets, worn-out sneakers and heavy boots.
Thus, they declared their indifference to the fashion industry. The main features of grunge are untidiness, layering, oversized clothing, checked and denim.
Runway fashion adopted the tradition of grunge, it could be found in Vivienne Westwood, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld.
Minimalism
This style originated in the 60s, but reached its greatest development precisely at the end of the twentieth century. Many designers have relied on conservatism, simplicity of shapes and colors. Great attention was paid to the strict cut and simple silhouettes.
The most prominent representatives of the style are Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, who later cultivated the unisex style that emerged from minimalism. Over time, unisex morphed into androgyny, which is popular today.
If grunge came to the catwalks from the streets, then with minimalism it was the opposite. Thanks to the efforts of designers in everyday wear, laconic jeans, white tops and T-shirts, flat-soled shoes, jackets and a minimum of accessories have become popular.
In the movies, minimalism was brilliantly represented by Rachel and Monica from Friends, Dana Scully from The X-Files, and the heroine Sharon Stone from Basic Instinct.
Rave and neon
In music, grunge has been replaced by a new direction - rave. This is electronic music, of which non-stop parties and drugs were an integral part. Inevitably, this influenced fashion trends in clothing. Acid colors, vinyl and plastic, superminis, tees and tops with psychedelic prints, shoes with a huge platform, bright hair and makeup became popular.
It was difficult to find this direction on the catwalks, but on the streets the style was more than active. Hair in blue, green, orange, a 15-centimeter platform, vinyl clothing - all this was popular even in Russia.
Sport chic
In the mid-90s, another style direction was born, which made leggings an iconic piece of clothing. They were worn with sneakers, shiny T-shirts, dresses and miniskirts.
Also popular was a crop top (preferably showing off a navel piercing) worn with jeans or miniskirts.
Sport-chic has come both to the catwalks and to the cinema. He could be found in most of the youth TV series of the time.
Eco style
At the end of the twentieth century, the ecology around the world deteriorated sharply, which could not but affect the fashion industry. Designers began to look for ways not to create, but to process materials that were in use.
For example, fashion designer Martin Margela, altered old clothes that were out of fashion. Over time, this idea of reshaping and re-sewing old clothes became widespread, and at the moment it has reached its peak. Eco-style, not only in clothes, but also in the interior, has been popular for more than a year.
This includes the abandonment of synthetic fabrics in favor of linen, cotton and hemp, natural leather shoes.
At the same time, the "green" began to actively promote the ban on natural fur, which designers began to replace with synthetic. In the 90s, Franco Moschino became the first, and today many fashion brands no longer use him in their collections.
Iconic clothing
Business image
To understand how the business women of the time dressed, it's worth remembering Agent Scully. These were elongated jackets with huge shoulders, trousers or short skirts, silk shirts and massive coats.
Casual look
- Sheath dress, linen-style dress, square short dresses in the style of minimalism.
- Crop tops, T-shirts and T-shirts with fringes (the bottom was cut into thin stripes), bright or white T-shirts with prints and photos of your favorite stars. One of the striking examples is a T-shirt with the main characters of the movie "Titanic", which almost every girl had in the late 90s.
- Leggings in bright colors and with various prints.
- Oversized sweaters, cropped sweaters, knitted dresses and jackets.
- Classic trousers with a high waist, trousers with a bell bottom from the knee, trousers with ethnic and animal prints.
- Denim and leather jumpsuits.
- All kinds of denim clothes - trousers, skirts, shorts, jackets, sundresses.
- A variety of leather clothing - leather jackets, trousers and shorts, overalls, skirts, vests, long raincoats.
Shoes and accessories.
Shoes with massive tractor soles, shoes and boots with thick, stable heels were popular. Grunge fans wore Grinders and Dr. Martens boots. Sneakers and sneakers were also relevant, but if in the USA they were Convers and Adidas, then we mainly have Chinese fakes.
Chokers, large hoop earrings and thin chains were preferred for their jewelry.
90s style today
Despite the fact that this period has long been considered one of the most insipid, today it is incredibly popular. Beginning in 2012, elements of that era began to appear in the fashion collections of designers.
At first it was neon colors, in 2013 there was a real boom in grunge. Some copied all the same Kurt, while others added eclectic grunge to it. Lace and coarse knit sweaters paired with coarse boots didn't go out of style for several seasons.
Some designers had elements of rave, minimalism, sport chic. The last two directions have not gone out of fashion lately, they have become universal.
At the moment, elements of the style of the 90s are at the peak of their popularity. Wide heels, square toes on shoes, crop tops, high-waisted jeans, miniskirts with plain white tees.
Each designer presents this era in a different way. Someone bets on minimalism, which is appreciated for its rigor and simplicity, while others use the glitter and variegation of that period in their collections.
It's great! Thanks a lot. Very interesting and informative.
I would like to add about the grunge style. And if we talk about him exactly as a style of clothing, then first of all it must be said that he brought something new, which influenced the fashion industry.First, let me remind you that it was the "grunge" style that became the founder of the very ripped jeans that young people still wear. Secondly, grunge brought into fashion plaid shirts and very fashionable now heavy, rough boots with thick soles. In addition, grunge and hippie should not be confused: untidiness is a hippie) And grunge is rather carelessness, as the personification of freedom, but things are always, albeit worn, but clean, even a little washed out.
I agree about the washed things :). I washed my jeans almost every day and dried them over the gas oven.
