All about bulk candles
Bulk candles have an attractive appearance, are safe in every sense and are easy to renew at home. The variety of wax shades and candlestick shapes allows you to choose a product for every taste.
What it is?
Bulk candles, often referred to as pearl, granular or sand candles, are formed from three main elements: special wax is poured into a container that looks like something between a vase and a flask, and a special cotton wick is inserted. The composition of such lighting devices includes palm wax, also known as palm stearin, an environmentally friendly and safe substance obtained from the fleshy part of the oil palm fruit. By the way, for this only those fruits are harvested that are already ripe and interfere with the tree. The material is used not in the usual liquid at first, but after the hardening state, but in the form of spherical granules with a diameter of 1-2 millimeters. White balls look very much like beads.
However, candlesticks filled with colored wax - granules painted with special dyes - can also be purchased for interior decoration.
The material used for candles does not smoke or smoke, has a pleasant natural scent, does not float or deform. Products maintain a presentable appearance and performance even when cast paraffin candles melt and lose their attractive shape. The presence of a limiting capacity prevents sagging on furniture. You should also not be afraid of the release of heavy substances during combustion. It is also valuable that the natural resource is renewable, in contrast to the same paraffin.
Loose candles, which can be placed on absolutely any horizontal surface, from a table to a cabinet shelf, are very economical and even profitable to use. For example, a candlestick with a volume of 200 milliliters, filled with only 100 grams of loose wax, is able to give pleasure for 10-12 hours. Professional decorators appreciate the opportunity to pour wax into a special bag at any time, and transform the flask itself into a flower vase. It's great that long burning pellets are renewable - any candle can be easily renewed after it burns out. By the way, it is allowed to light them both outdoors and indoors.
During the first hour of operation, a puddle of hot substance appears in the candle, the depth of which can reach 6 centimeters. With each passing hour, both wax and oil will evaporate, and the "bath" will slightly sag down. The melting temperature of a pearl candle is approximately 68 degrees, so it burns three times longer than a paraffin one. It is worth mentioning that the only drawback of stearic candles is the high price, which exceeds the cost of the same paraffin.
How to do it?
Even schoolchildren make bulk candles with their own hands - the workflow is so simple that anyone can handle it... The main thing is to choose high-quality materials for creativity.
The container used as a candlestick should be made of thick glass, although, in principle, any non-combustible vessel will do: a ceramic vase, a whiskey glass, a jam jar. Experts also recommend choosing containers with a diameter of at least 5-6 centimeters so that the fire does not spoil the form, and the liquid substance does not stick to its surface. The minimum container height is 3-4 centimeters - this will allow you to place such a number of granules in which the wick will be fixed.
The design of the candlestick can be anything you like. Forms with transparent or frosted glass, round, square, oval and any other configuration are suitable. You can also use containers with images, patterns or other decorative elements.
The wax itself must be purchased from a trusted manufacturer.
The work begins with the fact that the granules are poured into a candlestick and neatly leveled by tapping and rotating the mold. This is necessary so that the substance melts in the center and does not spread to the edges. The minimum layer height should be 3-4 centimeters. At will, it is allowed to fill a quarter, third, half, three-quarters or a full candlestick.
A clear glass container is best filled halfway. A wick is inserted in the center of the candle as low as possible so that only 5 millimeters of it remain above the surface. The full length of the wick, as a rule, does not go beyond 5-6 centimeters. Interlaced fibers 3 centimeters long are enough for 4 hours of burning, and 4 centimeters - for 6 hours. The 6 cm wick is ideal for ten hours of use. Several wicks are used when the diameter of the candle is more than 15 centimeters.
You can also use balls of several colors and form patterns from them.... The easiest way, of course, is to lay out an even layer by layer, observing the appearance of horizontal stripes on the sides.
To receive pattern "Mountains" you need to take a funnel. You will have to fill the candlestick in such a way that the layers are formed at varying angles to the table surface.
Lace pattern requires first filling the vessel with multi-colored layers, and then using a wooden tool to lower them vertically or at an angle along the walls of the vessel. The granules from the upper layers should wake down, forming a lace.
Looks very impressive "Luminous path", resulting from two grooves. Each is filled with wax, after which the wicks are inserted along their entire length with an interval of 5-7 centimeters.
To create a decorative element called "Burning Lake" you will need to prepare a very wide round container. First, it is filled with granules, and then with wicks over the entire surface, maintaining intervals of 5 to 7 centimeters.
The combined product will also look original. To obtain it, a wide candle is taken with a depression in the upper part, which is then filled with organic granules and a wick.
The base itself can look like a classic cylinder, or its appearance can resemble a sphere, a cone or a human figure.
How to update?
Anyone can handle the renewal of a bulk candle, not even one who has never worked with decorative lighting fixtures before. After extinguishing the light and the wax cooling, it is enough to pull out the cinder with a wick, add fresh wax and insert a new wick. If the candle is completely burnt out, then all the formed crust is removed from the vessel.
You can also pour the remaining wax into a vessel of a different shape and get a completely new product. In some cases, it will be possible to reanimate the candle with the help of special wax sand, which looks like sugar. It is made from natural beeswax. It is imperative to use wax to renew your sand candle, not harmful paraffin.
