Metis dachshunds: characteristics of popular hybrids and features of caring for them
Dogs of breeds, distinguished by their small size, remain favorites among other animals living with a person in his home. Today, a lover of faithful four-legged pets will be able to choose an animal from a large number of different breeds, where dachshunds are especially popular. In the light of its relevance, now you can find mixed variations of a hunting dog, no less interesting from the point of view of exterior and behavior.
Who are they?
The Dachshund breed is represented by animals with well-developed hunting instincts. Dogs stand out among other representatives of pets with an elongated body, an active and friendly disposition, and short limbs. As a rule, the size of dachshunds rarely exceeds 20 centimeters at the withers, the weight varies between 6-10 kilograms. Dogs live no more than 15 years.
Since this breed is very popular among breeders of hunting dogs-partners, as well as among dog lovers who keep them at home, today you can meet a cross between a dachshund with various large and small dogs. Mestizos adopt exterior and behavioral characteristics from their parents, and are also distinguished by increased training abilities in comparison with thoroughbred and purebred animals.
Hybrids are positioned as designer dogs, however, due to the loss of purebred qualities, they are not allowed to show. When breeding mestizo, it can be quite difficult to predict the result of crossing, since not a single breeder will undertake to reliably assert how the animal's body will behave. Dachshund / mongrel crosses can be especially unpredictable.
The demand for hybrids is due to their low cost, as well as immunity to many diseases, which the dog usually adopts from different breeds. Today there are many crossbreeding options, each of which is popular with dog lovers.
Advantages and disadvantages of hybrids
Such hybrids, like any other animal, have strengths and weaknesses. The advantages of mestizo dachshunds include the following qualities:
- as a rule, most of the crossed hunting dogs have strong immunity to various diseases;
- the life expectancy of mestizo in most cases will be higher than that of purebred individuals, this is due to genetic characteristics;
- lactating bitches are distinguished by a high level of milkiness, so they will be able to feed more puppies;
- dogs do not stand out for their high cost, therefore they are available to most breeders.
Among the disadvantages of hunting dachshund hybrids, the following should be noted.
- In each case of crossing animals of two breeds, there is a risk of getting a completely unpredictable result. This applies not only to the exterior of the dog, even if small in size, but also to its behavioral qualities. So, an outwardly attractive dachshund can acquire a very aggressive disposition, especially when using an ordinary mongrel as a second animal.
- Also, there is always a high probability that the mestizo will inherit from their even purebred parents not only positive characteristics of the breed, but also negative ones.
There were cases when diseases from both breeds were transmitted to a hybrid at the genetic level at the same time, which seriously affected its life expectancy.

How to contain?
Caring for hybrids of dogs of different breeds is reduced to the implementation of mandatory measures related to the maintenance of the house of a four-legged friend.If the pet has inherited a long coat, then the animal will need to be combed regularly; combing the dog 2-3 times a week is considered optimal. Since every half-breed will inherit from the dachshund a tendency to dig the earth, the hybrids will have to be bathed more often, and you can also visit grooming salons with the pet.
Obligatory hygiene measures are cleaning the ears and eyes. This is best done with damp cotton pads. In some breeds, the organs of vision are a vulnerable part of the body and therefore require regular maintenance. The dog needs to trim the claws as they grow back.
For these purposes, you can use a clipper or resort to the help of specialists in the salon.
Every week, your pet needs to brush its teeth using a brush and toothpaste designed for dogs. Some hybrids will not be able to live on the street or in an open-air cage, so before choosing it is worth studying the features of the content of each breed. Pets will need two daily walks in the fresh air.
Dachshunds are prone to gaining excess weight, despite their activity, so the breeder must strictly control the diet of the mestizo. For feeding, you can use industrial feed or natural food. It is important to provide the dog with all the necessary vitamins and minerals. A couple of times a month, you can arrange fasting days for the dog. The menu of mestizos should be dominated by lean meat, dairy products, vegetables and boiled cereals. Commercial feed must be premium. Hybrids will need vitamin complexes on a regular basis.
An important point when keeping such dogs is socialization and training. Animals must obey their master, since even a small dog who considers himself the leader in the family, due to the lack of proper education, can pose a danger to humans. It is not recommended for the breeder to show aggression, as well as to beat the dog. Exercise regularly and is best done outdoors.
Some dogs can be trained to relieve themselves in a special litter box in the home.
How to distinguish a thoroughbred puppy from a mestizo?
The main distinguishing feature of a hybrid from a purebred animal will be the exterior, in addition, a person, having observed the behavior of a dog, may find in it some behavioral qualities that are not characteristic of the breed. It will also indicate a cross between the dog and another breed. When planning the acquisition of a purebred animal, you should study the established standards inherent in such pets. There are no similar parameters for mestizos.
In addition to an independent analysis of the exterior and behavioral qualities, indicating that the puppy is purebred, there will be a chip or a stamp on the dog. The number indicated on them will be spelled out in the pedigree, which will become a vivid confirmation of the pedigree origin of the animal. Mestizos will not have such "tips" due to their hybrid origin.
