Menstruation is an important part of any healthy woman's life. But in spite of everything, each such period should not interfere with active modern life. Most women and girls opt for panty liners, preferring them to all other hygiene products. Only a small percentage consider the use of tampons to be one of the most convenient ways to make their life easier during this period. However, it can be difficult for those new to the craft to find the right size. How to do this, what nuances need to be taken into account in this case, will be discussed in the article.

Why is size important?

The larger the tampon, the more it will absorb. From the point of view of logic, it may seem that the most convenient is the largest tampon (supposedly it will protect against leakage, and this is most important). However, it is not. Really, A tampon that is too absorbent can absorb more secretions, but it can also cause toxic shock. A similar condition manifests itself in the form of high fever, vomiting, rash, and other symptoms. Another problem that can arise if you choose too large a tampon is that the vaginal mucosa can dry out. This, in turn, can cause microflora disturbances and even cause inflammation. If the tampon is too small, then, for obvious reasons, leakage cannot be avoided.

Thus, doctors recommend choosing the tampon with the lowest absorbency required. It is recommended to start with the smallest size (usually slim) and then gradually increase the size as needed.

Absorbance levels

As already mentioned, and quite obviously, the size of the tampons determines the level of absorbency. Simply put, the larger the tampon, the more it will absorb. Most modern tampons are 5 cm long, the smallest are 1.3 cm in diameter. The more absorbency a tampon is, the larger its diameter. Tampons can be roughly divided into several categories according to their absorbency.

  • Ultra, the level of absorption is 6 or more drops (more than 20 ml). The biggest. It is recommended to purchase in case of extremely heavy discharge. These are usually nocturnal items.
  • Super plus, the level of absorption is 5 drops (from 9 to 20 ml). They are also used during the heaviest periods.
  • Super, the level of absorption is 4 drops (from 7 to 15 ml). Similar to Super plus but thinner. It should be used when there is a tendency for the discharge of menstruation to be above average.
  • Regular or Normal, the level of absorption is 3 drops (from 3 to 9 ml). Suitable for those who always have small discharge.
  • Junior, aka Slim, the level of absorption is 2 drops or 1 drop (from 1 to 3 milliliters). Suitable for the first and last days of menstruation.

How to choose the size?

It is relatively easy to choose a tampon on your own without the help of a doctor; you just need to take into account some basic factors.

  • The most important criterion in choosing a tampon is your own feelings. If the product brings discomfort, then discard it immediately. The tampon shouldn't be felt. If for you the question of how to determine what size a tampon is needed still remains unclear, then it is recommended to opt for special kits. It is often difficult to find a suitable tampon in regular stores - most of the assortment is medium-sized products that are not suitable for those who first decided to use them. Small or large tampons can be found at specialty hygiene stores, drug stores, or online shopping platforms. If you have not used tampons before, then, as already noted, you need to purchase the thinnest / smallest. They are easy to recognize by the Slim, Junior, Slim fit labels. One of their advantages is that they are easy to insert.
  • It can be considered that the tampon was chosen correctly if, within a period of 4 to 6 hours, it did not have time to completely saturate the secretions. If you have to change the product more often than once every 4 hours, then you need to choose a model with a different, higher absorbency. It is also necessary to select such products according to the level of absorbency according to the day of menstruation. Usually, in the first 1-3 days, the discharge is the strongest, and later it decreases.
  • The applicator is also an important factor. If you have just started using such products, then it is better to take tampons with a plastic applicator. Concurrently, they are also the most versatile - they are used by most women. And there are also cardboard applicators, which can usually be seen in budget models. For those who do not want to feel the tampon, in general, there are products without applicators.

Sliding applicators are relatively modern. Before using them, you need to "stretch" (push one part out of the other).
