Biewer Yorkshire Terrier: what does it look like and how to keep it?
The Biewer Yorkshire Terrier is a small decorative puppet dog, pretty, intelligent and friendly. The breed is young, it is a little over 30 years old. Over the years, hilarious crumbs have delighted many of their owners and brought positiveness into their lives.
Origin
In 1984, in a litter of Yorkies, German breeders named Beaver had puppies with an unusual color for this species. There was a mutation responsible for the white color and white spots were found in the babies. The owners liked the manifestation of the unusual pigment, they decided to fix it in subsequent generations. After four years of persistent selection work, in 1988, the new breed was presented in the show ring in Wiesbaden as a black and white Yorkie. A year later, the breed was registered in the German club A. S. N. - L. e. V. and created the first standard. The standard was finally signed in 2007.
The difference in the breed was not only in white spots. It contained genes that the Yorkies did not have. This meant that other types of dogs, not related to terriers, participated in the creation of this breed. Black and white Yorkies arrived in Russia in 2008.
The decorative beaver, with the light hand of the English singer Margot Eskens, began to be called "a ball of wool". At dinner, her husband presented her with a dish covered with a lid. When the singer opened it, she saw a tiny beaver puppy and exclaimed with admiration: “ala PomPon!”, And this name stuck among the people.

Character
There is a misconception that small dogs are not smart and cocky. The Biewer-Yorkshire Terrier refutes the offensive impression with its character. He is quick-witted, lends itself well to training, he understands everything that the owner tells him. Beaver gets along well with other pets, will not offend even a bird if it is a member of the family. He enjoys playing with small children. At the same time, his heart is very courageous. Small growth will not stop the pet from rushing to protect the owner if he is in danger.
Beaver is a sociable, affectionate, cheerful dog, he can quickly dispel the bad mood of others and set them up to be positive. The kid loves all family members faithfully and gladly participates in their life. Leaving an adult dog in the wrong hands and a new environment is like killing it. The animal will endlessly suffer, therefore, people who are not confident in their attitude to animals, it is better not to choose this breed.
Beavers love outdoor games, but their temperament is quite moderate, they are obedient and docile, unless, of course, the owner spoils the pet. The dog will quickly realize that he is an important person for his family, will begin to show stubbornness, be capricious and willful. It is better to acquire a puppy at the age of 3 months and immediately engage in his upbringing, then he will become a good friend and companion.
Comparison with Yorkshire Terrier
For the Biewer, Yorkshire Terriers have become the basic breed, therefore, these pets have an external resemblance. But since other breeds of dogs participated in the creation of the tricolor york, they also have certain differences.
- Wool is the main difference between these types. Yorkies are blessed with dark or silvery fur. The Beaver has a thicker, shinier and softer coat that is resistant to tangles and dirt. They have an unusual color, created by the spots on the head and body.
- Beavers have strong immunity, they have hereditary diseases, but they are less susceptible to them than Yorkshire terriers.
- Tricolor York is much quieter than its brother.
- If you skip walks and do not physically load the dog enough, the beaver will begin to get fat, which does not happen with the Yorkie.
- Beavers are larger, have a stronger physique, strong muscular limbs, so they surpass Yorkies in speed.
In addition to personal data, both breeds differ in time and place of origin. Yorkshire Terriers were bred in England at the end of the 19th century, and biewers in the 80s of the last century.
How to choose a puppy?
The puppy can be purchased using advertisements on the Internet. But it is better to do this in the nursery, since in Russia biewers are not often found and no one is immune from deception. Professional breeders will provide documents for the dog, as well as information about parents, vaccinations. The place where the puppy is kept should be inspected, it should be well-groomed and warm. Then pay attention to the baby's health. If he is active and cheerful, communicates with pleasure and does not hide in a corner, then, most likely, he is healthy. If the puppy whines, tries to bite when picked up, then something is bothering him. A distended abdomen may indicate digestive disorders or worms.
When choosing a puppy, you should examine its coat. At the age of 2-3 months, it is still short, but dense and uniform, without bald spots. The color is checked against the standard. The spots that distinguish this breed are harmoniously located throughout the body. The ideal baby is white on the chest, abdomen and limbs. It is better not to take a puppy with a chaotic pattern. The presence of golden spots is allowed.
The beaver has 12 incisors, the lack of teeth indicates pathology. The outside silhouette of the dog is important. The back should be straight, slightly wide and even. The nose and eyelids are free of age spots, the iris is clear, the eyes are dark. Kids are distinguished by strong, thick paws. By two months they weigh 900 g.
It is better to take the puppy home at the age of 2-3 months, when the distinctive features of the breed begin to be seen. Completely all the features of the breed can be seen only by six months.
Maintenance and care
The maintenance and care of a decorative dog involves a number of points: hygiene, grooming, walking, feeding, visiting a veterinarian. Let's consider everything in order.
Hygiene
Pet hygiene should be taught from puppyhood, then he will take all the procedures for granted as an adult.
- The morning should begin with an examination of the condition of the eyes and ears to exclude inflammation and suppuration. If necessary, the eyes are washed with boiled water, chamomile infusion or special pharmaceutical agents. Dirt from the ears is carefully removed with a cotton swab.
- A dog toothbrush and toothpaste should be purchased. The brush is put on the finger, then the teeth are brushed. The procedure is carried out every 3 or 4 days.
- Bathing should be done 1-2 times a month. The pet's ears are closed and the body is washed with a special hypoallergenic dog shampoo. To make the procedure seem more enjoyable, you can throw toys in the bathroom. After bathing, the moisture from the wool is removed with a towel and, if necessary, the dog is dried with a hairdryer. Then it is combed.
- In addition to bathing, brushing and trimming is essential for a good coat. If the dog does not participate in exhibitions, a short hygienic haircut is suitable for him, which the owners can master, but it is better to entrust the dog's hairstyle to an experienced groomer. A pet needs a haircut from the age of four months. Beaver also needs daily brushing. The wool is tidied up with a special massage brush, and the bangs are tied with a bow. The fur of this breed does not shed seasonally, it is almost never seen on sofas or carpets.
- It is necessary to monitor the condition of the pet's claws, as they grow, they should be trimmed with scissors. With daily walking, the dog grinds them on a hard surface during walks. In winter, when walks become infrequent, claws will have to be trimmed much more often.
- Walking is necessary for the beaver, without movement it will begin to get fat. He should be offered active games, running, jumping. The kid needs to be taken to a safe place, wherever he risks getting run over by a car or colliding with a large dog. In winter, the pet can relieve itself in a cat litter box or a hygienic diaper.
Health
Vaccinations will provide protection from many types of diseases to the dog. The first vaccination is given to a baby at the age of 8-9 weeks. He receives comprehensive protection against 7 viruses, such as hepatitis, distemper, leptospirosis, etc. The puppy is re-vaccinated when he is 3 months old, a component against rabies is added to the general vaccine. Further, vaccinations are carried out once a year according to the scheme and recommendations of the veterinarian. Before taking a pet for vaccination, it must be treated for helminths.
As already noted, beavers have hereditary pathologies, only they rarely develop, since good health is inherent in this breed. You need to pay attention to the following problems:
- ailments of the vascular system affect the growth of puppies;
- unbalanced nutrition can cause pancreatitis;
- lack of activity, overfeeding, treating with sweets leads to obesity;
- osteochondropathy of the head of the hip bone got the beavers from the Yorkies;
- gut problems can cause food allergies and diarrhea.
It is necessary to monitor how the puppy's teeth are changing, as this may be abnormal. After walking, the dog should be checked for ticks and fleas. If the care of health and appearance is timely and correct, the pet can happily live up to 15 years.
Feeding
A puppy's diet is different from that of an adult dog, so consider them separately.
Puppies
Breeders provide the puppies with high quality food. Taking the baby home, you should ask what was included in his diet from the breeder and prepare him the same feeding. Changing the menu, if necessary, should take place gradually. The number of feedings depends on the age of the puppies. If complementary foods are used with natural products, they cannot be combined with dry food. In the diet of babies, it is necessary to introduce rice, buckwheat, boiled fish, meat and turkey. They are also given eggs, cottage cheese, milk. You can add olive oil to the dish. At the age of six months, the beavers are transferred to three meals a day, the puppies are no longer given milk, replacing it with fermented milk products. This is necessary for the digestive system to function well.
Adult dogs
Adult pets should be fed twice a day. Their food needs to be well balanced. If the diet of dogs contains super-premium dry food, you should not worry about the health of the pet, they meet all the requirements of proper nutrition. Feeding natural food involves periodically adding vitamins and minerals to meals. The animal's diet should include cereals, vegetables, raw beef and boiled chicken, boiled tripe and offal, fat-free sea fish, olive oil. Excludes baked goods, legumes, sweets, smoked meats and fried foods.
Upbringing
Beavers do not require special skills such as hunting, fighting, or sentry. It is enough to teach them the correct behavior in order to protect themselves from the whims and willfulness of the dog in the future. You can start by reinforcing your peeing habits on a tray or absorbent diaper. They will come in handy when the pet is left without a walk in bad weather.
Teaching the Beaver commands is not difficult, he quickly masters simple concepts: "sit", "lie down", "fu", "come to me." The dog is mentally balanced, he responds normally to commands. The pet will not run away if he is not allowed, or take in his mouth whatever it finds. It is necessary to train the dog not to accept food from strangers. If the cunning dog begins to evade classes, the owner will have to be persistent, but the educational process cannot be interrupted.In the future, the pet will get used to the rules of behavior and life will improve. During training, the beaver should be encouraged with treats and never physically punished. It is enough to lower your voice and change the intonation, the sensitive dog will understand everything.
Popular nicknames
