For the Yorkshire Terrier, natural meat is an excellent option. It is recommended to take chicken, turkey, beef or rabbit fillets. It is better to include in the menu and offal: lung, liver, heart, stomachs (give no more than once a week). Fillet can be used every day along with boiled cereals or vegetables (beets, cabbage, carrots, pumpkin).

Almost any greens and green vegetables will be an excellent option. Sometimes you can give animals a small amount of fermented milk components: cottage cheese, kefir or fermented baked milk. They can be used every day, but no more than once and in small portions.

Egg yolk can be fed to terriers once a week. But it is better to take quail eggs. Adding olive oil is also great as it promotes good digestion.

In small quantities, you can enter the menu and prunes with dried apricots. These foods contribute to a good metabolism in the body.

Currently there are a considerable number of ready-made food for the Yorkshire terrier.

  • Orijen. This dry food is produced in Canada. It is distinguished by the maximum content of meat products.
  • Hills. This feed belongs to the premium class. This diet is based on natural meat and rice.
  • Acana. The food is produced on the basis of meat. By-products are not used at all in its manufacture. This food also contains fruits, vegetables and berries.
  • Brit care. This Czech brand produces dog food based on poultry or lamb. It also contains rice grains, dried beet chips and salmon oil.
  • Belcando. The main component for the production of such feed is rice. In addition, the composition contains meat and medicinal herbs. This food is saturated with various vitamin and mineral supplements.
  • Monge. In the production of such feed, chicken meat is in the first place. It contains rice grains and corn. The food does not contain by-products and aromatic additives.
  • Trainer. This Italian brand produces diets based on rice and rice protein. Only after these components comes meat. Most often, duck fillets are used for cooking.
  • Nero Gold. The main component is chicken meat. The composition also contains maize, rice grains and chicken fat.

There are a few things to pay attention to before purchasing the right food. So, be sure to check the class the diet belongs to. Super-premium class is suitable for Yorkshire terriers, it is not recommended to buy economy class food. It can harm the digestive system of the Yorkshire Terrier.

You also need to pay attention to the composition of the menu. It is better to choose food with the maximum content of meat products and rice. A diet with vegetables and fruits or berries is also an excellent option for this breed of dog.

If you decide to give preference to ready-made commercial food, then keep in mind that they contain too little water, so sometimes it is worth introducing wet food.

    You can start feeding your Yorkie puppy with wet food, and then gradually transfer it to dry food. But at the same time, veterinarians are advised to purchase ready-made food of the same brand.

    Quality food from specialty stores has the right balance of protein, fat, minerals, carbohydrates and vitamins that your dog needs. Dry food can help maintain healthy teeth in your Yorkie. They do not cause the appearance of tartar or plaque.

    What shouldn't be given?

    It is strictly forbidden to give some products to Yorkshire terriers. These include sugar and other sweets, citrus fruits or citrus juice, because these ingredients can cause a severe allergic reaction in your pet.

    The diet should not include food containing too much seasoning or salt. TThese dogs should not be given saltwater fish, salted broths, legumes, and long bones.

    Pastry products - bread, pasta, pastries - should also not be included in the dog's menu, as they can provoke dermatitis or diarrhea in the animal. Smoked meats - cheeses, sausages, sausages - are not given to pets, because they can lead to liver or pancreas diseases.

    How to feed your puppies correctly?

    Remember that for the first weeks a Yorkshire terrier puppy should eat its mother's milk. At the same time, it is recommended to periodically weigh it in order to track the weight gain of the pet.

    If the puppy does not begin to gain weight at all, then you will have to feed him additionally. To do this, you can buy a ready-made special mixture in the store or make it yourself at home.

    Currently, there are a large number of different ready-made formula for feeding puppies. These include the products of the Dutch company Unilac. This mixture contains in its composition all the substances necessary for the normal growth and development of the animal.

    Esbilak milk formula for puppies is also in great demand today. It looks like snow-white powder. This product contains trace minerals, minerals and vitamins to help strengthen the puppy's body.

    Newborn puppies should be fed every two hours. If the animal is a little older, then the mixture can be given to it once every three or four hours.

    If you want to prepare the mixture yourself, then you should use natural cow or goat milk. It is better not to take a store product. To make the food as useful as possible for your pet, chicken yolk is added to it. All components must be thoroughly mixed together. If you are going to feed very young puppies, vitamins A and D are also added to the mixture.

    When the animal is 3-5 weeks old, it is additionally fed with porridge of a liquid consistency. As a rule, they are prepared from buckwheat grains or oatmeal. It is during this feeding that puppies are taught to eat food from a bowl.

    Monthly pets can already start giving chopped minced beef. It can be served both raw and pre-cooked. You can also gradually introduce hot liquid food (soups) into the menu.

    When preparing soups for feeding puppies, you need to include in its composition a little cereal that you use for porridge, chopped or finely chopped meat (turkey, veal or beef).You can put some cabbage or carrots.

    In addition, it is better to introduce special vitamin supplements into the diet for the normal development of the puppy. You can use fish oil as them. First, two drops are injected, and then gradually increase to 20 drops.

    It is already permissible to gradually transfer two-month-old puppies to special feeds. At 2 months, you can give the dog a little boiled fish fillets.

    Puppies under two months old should be fed six times a day. It is permissible to feed pets up to four months five times. Six-month-old animals are already given food four times, and then three times.

    Features of feeding adults

    After a year, the Yorkshire Terrier can only be fed twice a day. You can give meat, fish, cooked cereals, some fruits and vegetables. But before that, you need to calculate the serving size. There is one teaspoon of food for every 0.5 kilogram of a dog's weight.

    There are some feeding habits for lactating and pregnant Yorkshire terriers. Do not change the dog's diet too drastically and drastically during such a period. This can put a lot of stress on your pet.

    If you fed your dog with food before pregnancy, then you need to buy special food for the animal, intended for pets during lactation. There is no need to transfer them to natural food.

    If your dog was originally on a natural diet, then it is recommended to include more fermented milk products in it. All food servings should be increased slightly.

    Milk porridge is an excellent option for pregnant and lactating terriers. Do not forget that during this period the dog needs a large amount of clean filtered water.

    After giving birth, your dog will be in dire need of a lot of protein and carbohydrates. If 2 or 3 puppies were born, then the nursing pet needs to eat several times more food per day than before giving birth.

    Pay attention to the amount of fluid you consume. For a nursing Yorkie, milk tea is an excellent option. For full energy recovery, it is permissible to add a little glucose.

    If Yorkies are not properly raised, they can get used to taking food from the hands of a person, so dogs should be taught to bowl from an early age.
