Many representatives of the fair sex give birth to miniature decorative dogs as their favorite pets. It can be Yorkshire Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Brussels Griffon and others. However, such a breed as the Toy Terrier, of an interesting color - red with black, is no less popular.

Description

A dog of this breed is energetic, moves a lot and loves to play, has a negative attitude towards loneliness and indifference. She is very attached to her master and always follows him, she is even ready to defend him. These dogs do not understand at all that they are very small, and therefore they can enter into a fight with representatives of large breeds. They are great companions, you can always take them with you. You can even visit restaurants with them. Toy terriers get excited quickly, so they shake most of the time. This is completely normal.

This breed is of 2 types: English and Russian. During crossing, smooth-haired and long-haired animals were bred, and they received the same name "Russian Toy Terrier".

Such little dogs they are absolutely not inferior in size even to a kitten, and that is why many female representatives began to take them with them everywhere. When transporting a toy terrier, you will not have any problems, since they are allowed to be carried in transport in a bag or simply hidden under clothes. But if you are going to go abroad, then you will have to run to collect all the necessary documents, otherwise you will not be released from the country.

Dogs are very energetic, with a cheerful disposition. They gladly make new acquaintances, they get along easily with everyone. They can be taught simple commands.

Mini-terriers are very pretty, with large eyes, high-set ears. And even in spite of their activity, at the necessary moments they will sit quietly and peacefully. If you take your pet with you to the store, then your pet can take a place right in the basket.

Despite their docile nature, some of this breed can be fidgety. And in order for them not to bring you unnecessary worries, they always need to do something. Despite the fact that the dog can relieve himself in a specially equipped place, it is necessary to take him out for a walk outside.

Note! You cannot push all their desires around, since the animal can feel like it is in charge, and it will no longer be possible to re-educate it.

External characteristics

Red Toy Terriers are characterized by the following distinctive external data:

  • weight - up to 3 kg;
  • height at the withers - 19–28 cm;
  • pointed muzzle;
  • Long neck;
  • small teeth;
  • the nose is dark or the same color as the coat color;
  • big eyes;
  • erect ears;
  • straight back;
  • docked tail (in most cases);
  • graceful paws;
  • thin and dry skin;
  • in long-haired dogs, the coat is slightly wavy, long and covers the claws; in smooth-haired dogs, it is short, fits well to the body, does not form bald spots.

How long do they live?

The life span of these animals is 12-15 years. But if there is proper care, proper nutrition, the necessary physical activity, then the pet will be able to live up to 23 years of age.

Diseases

Pets are susceptible to certain diseases, which the owners need to be aware of and, if possible, warn about.

  • Diseases of the musculoskeletal system (due to diminutiveness and fragility of bones). It is for this reason that one can often see limping toy terriers on the streets.
  • Neurology. This can affect both behavior and the functioning of the brain (circulatory problems).
  • Digestion. It is very important to eat a balanced diet.
  • Diseases of the eyes and mouth.

If you notice any signs of any disease, then urgently you need to contact a specialist in a veterinary clinic. It is strictly forbidden to diagnose and prescribe treatment ourselves!

But it can be difficult to diagnose a disease, because the small size often does not allow not only making a high-quality diagnosis, but also making the necessary tests. And the lack of a timely diagnosis and, accordingly, treatment can lead to sad consequences.

Almost always, all illnesses are caused by inadequate care. The health of the animal also depends on timely vaccinations, proper nutrition and care.

Content rules

In order for the animal to bring you only happiness and joy, and not create unnecessary trouble, you must follow some rules.

To prevent an unpleasant smell from emanating from the pet, he needs to be washed on time, to keep the place where he eats and goes to the toilet cleanliness. He can be litter-trained, but if you have a cat, then don't think that they can have one toilet for two. And you need to teach it from the first days, as you have it.

But do not think that having a litter box will free you from walking. This breed is very sociable, and if your pet has friends, he will really like it. But keep him away from large rocks. And so that the dog does not freeze, wear a suit or put it under a jacket.

Do not feed your pet. Meals should be balanced and include dry food, meat, fish, buckwheat, rice, dairy products, and occasionally vegetables and fruits.

Advantages and disadvantages

The positive qualities of the Toy Terrier make it a favorite breed among many dog breeders:

  • attractive appearance;
  • small size;
  • convenient to maintain;
  • requires little food;
  • friendly;
  • you can take with you on trips.

The red-haired mini-terrier, like all other species, has not only pluses, but also minuses, which must be studied before the establishment. In this case, the negative point is that animals easily break bones due to their fragility. And since these dogs are mobile and are in motion all the time, and also jump, there is a strong load on them, which can lead to fractures.

But it is worth paying attention to the fact that the bones will heal for a very long time or this may not happen at all. This will require treatment, which will be expensive, and further care will take a long time.

Walking

If your pet loves to move on the street on its own, and not on a leash, then at such moments you need to be attentive and careful. Due to the fact that toy terriers do not feel their size, they can calmly approach large representatives, and they, in turn, can attack and harm them, as a result of which they can have various injuries incompatible with life. In addition, due to their small size, they may simply not be noticed by people passing or passing by. Also, they are always freezing outside, not only in winter, but also in summer.

Note! Experts propose to train the animal to the litter box, and in those isolated cases when the dog will go out into the street, it must be dressed in special costumes.

Before you get yourself a toy terrier, be sure to weigh the pros and cons of the breed. Also study the characteristics of the species, make sure that you can provide all the necessary conditions. And only then get a dog.
