Everything about the "houndstooth" pattern on the fabric
The “goose foot” pattern has several alternative names, among which “dog's fangs” and a broken-type cage are better known. The traditional color of the print is black and white, for many seasons in a row the pattern has been conquering the catwalk. The print has long been ranked among the classic, neutral. Despite its rich history, it does not lose its relevance in modern clothing and interior design.
Origin story
The pattern, which went down in history as a "goose foot", belongs to the category of checkered prints. And, like most of this category, he was born in Scotland, during the Roman Empire. Archaeological research indicates that in such ancient times, the drawing was actively used by the Scandinavians, British and other peoples. But the black and white hit of all time has its origin in Scottish culture. However, at the very beginning, the print was different from what it appears in modern design. Only in the 19th century it was transformed into an ornament familiar to everyone today, and before that it looked more like a "border tartan". The pattern carried a serious semantic meaning; people who wished to declare their neutrality and lack of belonging to clans wrapped themselves in such canvases.
At first, the pattern was named for its proximity to the shape of a canine front canine. But then they noticed the similarity with the prints of the paws of geese, so the name was born, which was fixed in the history of fashion. The fabric masters weaved the fabric in a special way, intertwining black and white threads in a crisscross fashion. The canvas turned out to be quite smooth, light and effective. The print became widespread in the 19th century, when Scottish politicians used the neutral meaning of the picture as a kind of code.This image quickly gained popularity, and even the Prince of England did not disdain it, though already at the turn of the 20th century.
For decades, this type of cage was distributed exclusively in Europe. And then a number of famous personalities used the print in their outfits, so it gradually became famous.
Popularization
The first steps in the popularization of the cell were made by the great Coco Chanel. In the first half of the 20th century, it was she who began to include this or that printed element in the collection of clothes. But the drawing was massively distributed throughout the world by the equally great Christian Dior. He sewed several pieces of printed fabric for the 1948 collection, after which the pattern became his kind of emblem. In 10 years, the brand will release the legendary plaid shoes that will conquer the world. The print, which was considered old-fashioned, is reborn in the second half of the 20th century. Already in the bold 80s, designers are experimenting in every possible way with the size and shade of the cage. But by the 90s, the traditional drawing is acquiring more and more classic features.
But in the XXI century, the stereotypes about the old-fashioned "legs" were finally broken. The best designers in the world include clothes and accessories printed in different variations and shades in their collections. Houndstooth today decorates not only traditional types of clothing, but also jackets, sneakers, interior items. Modern fashion is loyal to this type of drawing; it is no longer associated with a thing from a grandmother's chest. Couturiers and mass-market designers create a variety of things in large and small cells of this type.
Fashion bloggers actively use such clothes in their looks. Stylists believe that the prospects for the "crow's feet" are very bright.
Areas of use of fabric
Despite the fact that the cage is a laconic print, the variegation of the “paws” has its own characteristics. Clothes of this kind do not mix well with other types of prints, some styles visually increase the volume. Therefore, before stitching a thing with such a pattern, it is worth evaluating your initial data. As a rule, clothes with a similar print are distinguished by their sophistication and special charm.
Now many models of things of different seasons are sewn from such fabric.
- Coat. Stylish and catchy thing that attracts attention. The cut can be any, most often traditional and white-blue, black-red colors are used. It is better to wear such a bright thing with monochromatic, neutral things.
- Down jackets. Very stylish and non-trivial models of down jackets allow you to stand out from the crowd in cold weather. Winter and demi-season jackets of various styles are increasingly adorned with this print. The length can be any - the jacket will still catch the eye. Traditional colors are complemented by combinations of juicy or muted tones.
- Dresses. One of the most classic incarnations of a print that can be considered versatile. In such a dress, you can go to work, on a date, to the theater, or for a walk. It combines elegance and chic. A monochrome blazer will be a great addition to a similar dress. Dresses with such a pattern are sewn from both dense and light fabrics, so such a dress can be called all-season.
- Pants. If the dress is too flashy for you, choose printed trousers. Checkered models are particularly chic, stylish and effective. The only thing is that the cell can get fat, so this fact should be taken into account. It is better to combine trousers with a monochrome top.
- Jackets. A great thing for a casual or austere look. Restrained color combinations are preferable here, although bright colors may well be included in informal outfits. The jacket will be a great addition to jeans, plain trousers, skirts.
- Skirts. Feminine plaid skirts are another good thing for all time. Classic wool skirts coexist with satin, chiffon, silk models in stores. The traditional style is a pencil, it is appropriate in almost any situation.Also common models are A-line, mini, flared midi and maxi.
- Costumes. Couples with skirts and trousers in this print are chosen by those who love the English style and prefer elegant outfits. A suit of such a plan will be organic in an office setting, in informal situations.
The main thing is that the additions to the costume are chosen correctly, it is better if they are monochrome.
- Sweaters. Another thing that has been relevant in recent years is relatively new in this design. It is less stiff than a suit or dress, so it fits well with relaxed outfits. A sweater or cardigan in a “houndstooth” is a bright and effective thing, experiments with color are more than appropriate here.
- Leggings. Quite a catchy thing that needs to be carefully used in looks for every day. In a sporty version, the print becomes more harmonious. In recent years, women of fashion often wear not only leggings, but also tights with such a print. It is worth remembering that they only look good on flawless legs. The colors are very diverse - from neutral to pastel and contrasting bright.
- Scarves. Of course, they produce various accessories with such a print, but it is precisely scarves that have become classics for a long time. Such a chic scarf is able to revive any image, it will make it catchy and expressive, without reducing the degree of elegance. It is versatile and fits well into any outfit style and mood.
- Bags. A trend without a rich history, because only in recent years it has become an adornment of many designer collections. A leather bag with a textile cover or padding on the leather itself - such variations are offered by designers today. The bag looks as impressive as possible and very stylish.
Clothes and accessories are by no means an exhaustive list of things that are adorned with a houndstooth print. This ornament is also in demand among interior designers. Today this pattern can be found on:
- finishing materials;
- furniture upholstery;
- tiles of different types;
- carpets.
Houndstooth interior design is most often used in the traditional black and white version. Such graphic-type accents make the design very lively, while not looking vulgar and not overloading the room. Other color combinations are more than appropriate too, especially if you use muted shades.
- Walls. A drawing of this type is quite often used to decorate walls, however, as an addition. Wallpaper and tiles add showiness to the room. Most often, part of the wall, one of the walls or an apron in the kitchen is decorated this way.
- Floor. Again, tiles are used here, but you can use a less radical way to decorate the floor. Buying carpet with this print is a very interesting decision.
- Furniture upholstery. Since the textile variation of the print is the most common, checkered upholstery is very common. Sofas, armchairs, an ottoman or a pouf, decorated in this way, look very stylish and respectable.
The most practical thing is to order removable covers that can be washed, as the fabric can be quite branded.
- Textile. "Houndstooth" is used by designers to create curtains, tablecloths, napkins, pillows and other textile accessories. This is the most practical variation for introducing a print into the interior, because such things are the easiest to replace if necessary.
