Trench coat - we understand models and quality
Peculiarities
The trench coat was created by gabardine factory owner Thomas Burberry in 1901 as an alternative to heavy British military overcoats. The models of this cloak were made from a waterproof material invented by the Scottish chemist Charles Mackintosh. At first, the trench coat was intended only for foot soldiers, and the front-line soldiers called it the "trench coat". Sometimes a trench coat is called a trench coat, in fact it is the same thing.
Since most veterans continued to wear trench coats after their retirement, they became quite popular even among the civilian population. The trench coat made it possible to look more respectable and businesslike. The women's version of the trench coat, introduced into fashion with the light hand of Coco Chanel, has retained its original cut.
The features of any model of a trench coat, be it a historical overcoat or a modern fashionable trench coat, are always its invariable attributes:
- Double-breasted clasp. The trench coat inherited from military jackets and overcoats, when they could be fastened on both sides, depending on the direction of the wind. The classic trench coat has 5 buttons in each row.
- The similarity of shoulder straps. Initially, they were sewn only on officer models, then they were attached to the trench coats of ordinary employees, playing the role of additional pockets for gloves, hats and other trifles.
- Mandatory belt. On the very first officer trench coats of the early 20th century. the belt was the only fastener. During the First World War, soldiers attached all kinds of military equipment to it - flasks, flashlights, binoculars, knives, and so on. In addition, the straight cut of the trench coat with the help of a belt can be easily adjusted to the characteristics of any figure.
- Eton collar. In the raised state, it served as additional insulation and protection from the wind for soldiers and officers.
- Spacious pockets. Quite a functional detail that has not lost its significance today. In wartime, some items of military ammunition were kept in their pockets.
- Departure yoke. It was added to the original design during the First World War as an additional shock-absorbing layer to soften the recoil of the rifle butt and to protect the soldier's shoulder from chafing with the rifle belt. It was located either only on the right shoulder, or on both sides. In women's models, it is traditionally sewn on the left shoulder. The yoke, located on the back, provides better protection from the rain.
- Cuffs with straps on the sleeves. Replaced the classic button cuffs for tighter coverage of the wrist straps in bad weather.
- Removable lining. The woolen lining served as a good insulation for the military in cold weather, although the trench coat was never a piece of winter clothing, but was rather used as a raincoat. At the moment, such linings are made of lighter materials, they allow you to lengthen the season of use of the trench coat.
Models
A classic trench coat is a beautiful and functional piece of outerwear that is a must-have in a basic wardrobe for all the fair sex. A modern women's trench coat is a double-breasted (less often single-breasted or with a buckle fastener) raincoat with a straight or slightly fitted cut. Sometimes the cut-off bottom is noticeably gathered. There is an incision or an opposite fold at the back. Cuffed sleeves can be tucked up or puckered. The usual set-in sleeve is often replaced by a raglan. The collar is classic turn-down, the presence of detachable details and shoulder straps are invariable.
The belt is tied or fastened with a buckle. Women's trench coats are often decorated with large, often contrasting buttons.
The children's trench coat for little fashionistas has all the features of a classic trench coat. Raincoats for girls are often sewn from water-repellent fabric and equipped with a detachable hood. Basically, trench coats are bought for children as an element of a business school wardrobe. But there are also quite "funny" models - from shiny fabrics, with bright prints or asymmetric cut.
For the demi-season, trench coats with leather, often quilted, sleeves are incredibly popular. And in summer, sleeveless trench coats are relevant, they are distinguished from ordinary sleeveless jackets by the presence of details typical for a classic trench coat: a turn-down collar, belt, shoulder straps, straps, fly-off yokes, as well as a double-breasted cut.
Ageless classics have their own immense audience among people of non-model parameters. A typical trench coat, thanks to its strict and clear cut, slightly widening towards the bottom, will easily hide the flaws of the full figure and bring the silhouette together. Owners of the A-silhouette can be advised trench coats widened downwards, and for ladies with an O-silhouette it is better to choose a straight cut, it is better to refuse the belt or tie it behind the back.
Styles
Styles of a modern women's trench coat are divided into tight-fitting, modern (looser), trapezoidal and oversized. Variants on the theme of the classic trench coat include flared hemlines, puffy puff sleeves, bright colors and prints, addition of a hood, a zip, fur and lace trim, the use of edging, decorative buttons, buttons and buckles.
Today, a trench coat is no longer just a raincoat. There are many so-called hybrids.for example, a cropped piece is called a trench jacket, and a lined mid-thigh length is known as a trench jacket. Leather trench jackets are especially popular. The trench coat is an elongated trench coat made of quality woolen overcoat fabric. A warm sheepskin trench coat is usually also equipped with a classic turn-down collar, two rows of buttons and a yoke. Not all models have shoulder straps... A belt or belt adds femininity to all these variations on his trench coat and emphasizes the figure.
Lightweight cotton models that repeat the cut of a classic trench coat are called anther trench coats. A trench dress is fashionable and functional; such a piece of clothing can be either with sleeves of various cuts or without them at all. So that the trench dress does not look boring, it is diluted with neckerchiefs and catchy accessories.
By season
The classic cut of trench coats has not changed for over a century. The straight silhouette of the cloak will adorn a girl and a woman with absolutely any figure. Such a trench coat, with or without a thin lining, is good to wear in a cool summer, as well as in late spring and early autumn. A quilted trench coat made of raincoat fabric is a real salvation in an autumn storm. Equipped with a deep hood, it protects not only from the cold wind, but also from the rain.
For the cold season, manufacturers produce trench coats with a warm liner or with a removable vest. There are also models with fur. Winter trench coats made of woolen fabric are quite popular - gabardine, drape, crepe, boucle, tweed and even cashmere.
Length
The trench coat is popular and relevant regardless of its length. Here it is important to proceed from your own preferences and features of the figure. For example, trench coats of any length are suitable for tall and slender girls and women, for short and thin it is preferable to choose short models up to the middle of the thigh, and slightly plump ones - up to the knee.
In addition, it is necessary to take into account those wardrobe items with which you plan to combine your trench coat. For lovers of jeans and trousers, it is more appropriate to buy cropped models, and for fans of skirts and dresses - products up to mid-calf length. But do not forget that the longer the trench coat, the warmer it is. If you are not an avid motorist and are planning to buy a non-summer trench coat model, think about styles that at least cover the hips.
Material
Since, in fact, all models of trench coats are similar due to the fact that they are actually sewn according to the same pattern, in order to stand out, you need to choose your model, which differs in length, material and color. As for the fabric, then, oddly enough, there is a fairly wide selection. If earlier trench coats were sewn exclusively from the patented Burberry water-repellent due to the special interweaving of gabardine threads, then Today, typical materials for a lightweight trench coat are also cotton, satin, silk, taffeta, tweed and denim.
In sunny and dry weather, a knitted trench coat will be the central accent of a stylish look. Tireless knitters could not ignore such an interesting style. This rather spectacular and unusual wardrobe item, knitted by hand or machine, is a great stylization for a classic trench coat.
In the production of trench coats, fabrics with special moisture-repellent impregnations and a Teflon coating are widely used. Also popular are polyamide, nylon and polyester waterproof fabrics. The raincoat fabric is practical, all sorts of fashionable styles are sewn from it, the trench coat is no exception. Leather trench coats have not given up their positions for several decades, but recently, patent leather trench coats have been receiving special attention.
Modern fashion designers also love to cut suede and tanned leather to match the patterns of a traditional trench coat. Warm trench coats are also made from thick coat wool. Wool is also used in trench coats as a lining. Fur can also be both outside and inside the product. Fur trench coats made of astrakhan fur and sheared fur look especially stylish.
Color solutions
Historically, traditional trench coats were only available in four colors - black, white, blue and sandy beige. And today, in the production of trench coats, monochrome solutions are most common, as well as pastel shades of gray-beige-brown gamut. These colors are versatile, they fit perfectly into any style and adorn any look.Recently, the red trench coat has also been classified as a classic model.
Modern interpretations of the classic trench coat are expressed in a wide variety of colors and prints - yellow, orange, pink, blue, green; flowers, geometry, "crow's feet", python, leopard, zebra, hearts, Turkish cucumbers, arabesques and so on. Trench coats in a cage look beautiful, models made in black and white are especially attractive. Checkered lining paired with a solid color top is a pretty stylish solution. Leather trench coats also delight in color variety, in addition to the classic black, dark blue, brown and beige shades on the catwalks, there are products of plum, terracotta, coral, emerald, turquoise, canary yellow and other bright colors.
Brands
Every self-respecting brand considers it its duty to produce its own line of fashionable trench coats. In addition to the founder of the Burberry trench coat, whose products are easily recognizable by the plaid lining with the family print, trench coats are sewn by Zara, Max Mara, Mango, Massimo Dutti, Michael Kors and Kenzo.
Fashion trends
Like any other item borrowed from a men's wardrobe, a classic trench coat should be worn with something overtly feminine. Therefore, no wide jeans, masculine shirts and rough boots. A short chiffon dress in a romantic style, mini-shorts, a skirt a couple of centimeters below the trench coat, tapered trousers with arrows, fashionable leather leggings, stretch jeans and a neutral top or turtleneck. A bright scarf or kerchief, threaded under the shoulder strap, will be an excellent addition to the outfit, and shoes with heels will emphasize an exquisite image.
With a cropped trench coat or trench jacket, you can wear loose-fitting trousers, the shorter the trench, the wider the trousers can be. A topical bomber or sweatshirt will accentuate the boldness of the outfit. Shoes with flat soles are suitable for a short raincoat. One of the fashion trends dictates that we wear sneakers and slip-ons in combination with a short trench coat. Bright rubber boots will indicate the original purpose of the trench coat as a raincoat designed to keep out the rain.
Colored and printed trench coats are no longer so versatile, and they should be combined with clothes of laconic design and muted tones so as not to look too provocative and vulgar.
