How to clean a cast iron pan from carbon deposits at home?
Although at the present time a large number of new products for the kitchen have appeared, allowing you to cope with homework as quickly and easily as possible, many housewives still prefer to use the good old cast-iron frying pan. However, the owners of such dishes often have to think about how to clean them from carbon deposits at home, because over time, the pan becomes dirty. There are many ways to get rid of such contamination, some of them were used by our grandmothers, such methods are time-tested.
What is the best way to wash?
Housewives who use kitchen utensils often think about what to do in order for them to remain aesthetic, clean, and also retain their properties for a long time. To do this, you need to take into account some recommendations.
Using the dishwasher
Cast iron items must not be washed in a dishwasher. Otherwise, rust will start to appear on the dishes.
If this error cannot be avoided, you can proceed as follows with the frying pan:
- rinse the product under running water (it must be warm), without using detergents;
- wipe the pan with a cloth towel;
- apply vegetable oil to the product (a few drops are enough), take a dry rag and scrub the pan. This tool should not be very much, otherwise everything will stick to the surface;
- pour salt into a frying pan, put it on high heat and wait until the smell appears;
- remove salt, wipe the dishes with the same cloth and evaluate the result - usually all unsightly traces disappear from the surface.
Hot dishes
Do not wash hot cast iron dishes. If you constantly pour water on a hot surface, it will deteriorate after a while. A hot frying pan can burst from the cold.
It is recommended to first wait, let the product cool down, and then wash the dishes using warm water.
Burnt food
Sometimes, after cooking, food particles burn to the surface of the pan. To get rid of them, do the following:
- pour soda, salt on the bottom, pour liquid into the pan. She should cover the layer of salt and soda;
- put the dishes on high heat, wait thirty minutes, then pour out the mixture and wash the pan (as you usually do).
Modern means
Today, consumers have access to a variety of tools, using which, you can get rid of old carbon deposits (according to advertisers and manufacturers). Many of them are really quite effective.
Many of these cleaning products are based on an acidic solution, which will eat away at the grease deposits. The most popular are Shumanit, Chister, Mister Muscle, Cillit Bang. Housewives often choose also Sanita - a cream that removes grease and other impurities very well.
So, apply the detergent to the dishes, clean the outer surface using a metal washcloth. Then rinse the pan using warm water, wipe it with dry material and apply oil to the surface. Products that are aggressive should be handled with rubber gloves. This will help protect your hands.
High temperatures
Carbon deposits appear due to the fact that pieces of food and fat burn to the surface of the dishes, but at the same time many get rid of it by burning. There are different ways of such cleaning. Some firing methods are quite safe and can be done at home. Some need more space.
First firing method:
- turn on the stove (you will need to use the largest burner);
- place the dishes so that the fire completely covers one of its sides;
- Wait a little (just a few minutes) and try to remove the carbon deposits using a knife. If unsuccessful, wait some more, let the pan heat up more;
- when it is possible to remove the contamination, go to the other side;
- at the end, let the dishes cool down and wash them with detergent.
The essence of the second method is the use of a blowtorch. The effect on carbon deposits in this case is the same (high temperature) - when heated, the fat becomes soot, which can be removed quickly and easily. However, this method is quite dangerous, precautions are necessary. As a rule, pans are cleaned in this way in workshops, garages - such places are best suited for such work. You should not experiment in a living room, otherwise you can spoil something or even start a fire.
A cast iron pan is fired using a regular fire. During a trip to nature, you can not only relax, but also solve some household issues.
The procedure is as follows:
- if the handle of the pan is not cast iron, it will have to be removed;
- you will need to place the item directly into the flame;
- wait fifteen minutes, carefully remove the pan using a stick, remove carbon deposits with a knife;
- if necessary, repeat the procedure again. Cast iron is fire resistant.
Boiling
You can prepare a mixture that was already known to our parents. In the past, there were no non-stick products, so everyone had to find effective and affordable ways to remove contaminants. If the necessary solution is created, taking into account all the rules, the old carbon deposits will be removed easily and quickly.
This tool consists of the following components:
- silicate glue;
- soda ash;
- soap.
To wash a cast iron product from rust and carbon deposits, it is better to use a regular dark laundry soap... It achieves better results than modern flavored products.
Take a small container, rub the soap there. Place also soda ash (200 g) there, add one tube of silicate glue. Add a little water, mix everything thoroughly.
Then you need to choose a container in which you will boil the composition. It shouldn't be very deep. In this case, it is necessary to select a sufficient width so that a frying pan can be put into the container. There should not be a lot of water, otherwise digestion will become less effective, there will be less active substances.
How long it takes to boil the pan depends on how dirty it is. In some cases, boiling alone is not enough, and it is possible to completely cleanse burnt food and fat only with the help of a person. You will need to rub the dishes, then boil again. It is necessary to boil objects from cast iron with an open window, otherwise the room will smell very bad.
Vinegar, soda, rock salt
You can use a mixture of baking soda, vinegar, and salt to wash your cast iron cookware. It will be necessary to mix all these components (the proportions must be equal). Add water - a few liters. Place cast iron in this mixture and simmer for about thirty minutes.
If there is a lot of carbon deposits, it is old, then boil twice as long. As a result, you will still be able to wash the old frying pan well inside and out.
Metal brush
Even if you use special products that allow you to effectively deal with dirt, or boil a pan, you cannot do without mechanical stress. It is recommended to choose a good metal brush for cleaning such dishes.
Of course, a metal product can leave scratches and marks on the surface. This can be avoided if correct, use such an item as carefully as possible. You will say goodbye to traces of soot, grease - and at the same time preserve the surface of the pan.
To wipe off a thick layer of burning from a frying pan, you can use a special metal attachment and a drill.
Thanks to such a tool, you will save energy - which could have been spent with a regular brush.
Surface restoration
Regardless of whether you choose a modern or popular way of cleaning the pans, then the surface of the product will need to be restored. The procedure is as follows:
- put the object on a strong fire, heat it;
- apply oil to the product using a brush;
- Allow the skillet to air, then rinse it under warm running water (no cleaning products needed) and dry with a towel.
By regularly caring for a cast iron pan, you can ensure that it retains its original appearance and lasts as long as possible. To avoid problems, you need to take into account all useful recommendations and do not forget about the safety rules.
