It's no secret that the state of the toilet, its cleanliness and pleasant smell speaks of the cleanliness of the owners. In addition, all residents of the apartment or house regularly visit the toilet. Therefore, it is very important to maintain cleanliness and hygiene there.

A toilet bowl freshener is not an obligatory part of this room, but its presence significantly increases the comfortable stay there. No matter how well the ventilation system works, it is difficult to completely remove unpleasant odors.

The modern market is rich in products such as toilet fresheners. Many of them are advertised, the consumer learns about some on the review sites or on the recommendations of friends. However, few people know that an effective and inexpensive air freshener is easy to make with your own hands at home.

Types of air fresheners on sale

The perfume industry continues to thrive and offers a variety of fragrances, even for toilet fresheners. Therefore, any consumer may well choose an option that is suitable in terms of smell, shape and cost.

All air fresheners can be roughly divided according to the principle of action and the form of release.

According to the principle of action, all funds can be divided into three groups.

Deodorants

Deodorant agents have the ability to bind molecules of an unpleasant odor, neutralizing it.

Flavors

These products have a strong odor that does not destroy unpleasant odors, but simply smells much more intense.

Combined action

They combine a deodorant effect and have a pronounced aroma.

According to the form of release, there are several types of air fresheners.

Spray can

The spray is very popular due to its affordable price and wide range of fragrances. Used throughout the apartment, including the bathroom. The aerosol is pumped into a container under pressure, easily sprayed by pressing a special button.

Of the minuses of such a tool, it is worth mentioning:

  • the need to regularly spray the spray;
  • short term of validity;
  • not all sprays effectively deal with unpleasant odors;
  • the composition of the aerosol is not suitable for everyone, especially for allergy sufferers;
  • it is contraindicated to spray the agent in a room with an air purifier, since the released ozone, when combined with spray molecules, turns into an unpleasant compound that affects the respiratory tract in a negative way.

Autosampler

It also sprays the product into the air, but liquid, gel or oil is poured directly into the dispenser. There are options where a cartridge or a special mini-cartridge is inserted. The essence of the device (which is also called a dispenser) is that it periodically sprays a certain amount of aromatic substances by itself. It can be programmed for the required period.

Of the minuses, it is worth noting the rather high cost of the dispenser and the low versatility of replaceable blocks.

If you suddenly cannot buy a cartridge from a familiar manufacturer, a product from another company will not work.

Gel air fresheners

They are containers filled with transparent gel balls.

Electronic means

Air fresheners spray gel or water-soluble aromatic oils. The devices practically do not create any noise, they work on an area of up to 15 m² continuously for 4-8 hours.

Sensory

These are fresheners that are triggered by a certain stimulus (turning on the light, opening the door, any movement). Their cost is high, therefore they are used more often in commercial premises (hotels, airports).

Aromatic blocks

They work constantly, unlike aerosols and auto-sprayers. These can be containers with a gel or solid base, which gradually evaporate, removing unpleasant odors. They can be attached to a wall or any hard surface.

Solid

Fresheners are plates that can be attached to walls or the rim of a toilet bowl. They work on every contact with water. A variety of such fresheners include special tablets or cubes that need to be thrown into the toilet cistern. There they dissolve, giving a pleasant tint to the water and cleansing the toilet with every flush.

Other means

They even came up with USB fresheners that work from the connectors of laptops or PCs. It is clear that this option is not very suitable for a toilet, but anything is possible.

A variety of rinsing compounds stand out: gel-like, solid ball-like, self-adhesive discs and cleanliness stickers. They can usually be hung under the rim of the toilet, and each time they are flushed, they give off a copious lather and a fresh scent.

Blocks are disposable and reusable, equipped with a comfortable handle that is securely attached to the toilet. If such a block accidentally fails (which is not uncommon in families with young researchers), it can be easily retrieved, since the irregular shape does not allow passage into the pipe.

DIY toilet bowl

You have probably noticed that all toilet bowl products are marked: “remove from children”, “avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes”, “do not use inside”. These warnings indicate the potential danger of such products. Of course, an adult will not start trying or swallowing such products, and for children, bright packaging and a pleasant smell always remain very attractive. Therefore, it makes sense to try to make a safe, without potent substances, freshener with your own hands: sparingly and a minimum of chemistry. The environmental friendliness of the resulting product is not its only advantage.You can really save on household chemicals while taking care of the environment.

From the recipes below, you can choose the one you like:

  • freshener based on essential oils;
  • original ball pendant with essential oils;
  • gel freshener;
  • from toothpaste.

Essential oils are an effective remedy against unpleasant odors. According to consumer reviews, air fresheners based on natural essential oils confidently occupy a leading position. It's important to remember that these volatiles can cause allergies, so experiment with caution.

  • For the simplest freshener, take a small, wide-necked container with a cotton ball moistened with a few drops of essential oil inside. You can take the oil of lemon, grapefruit, orange, pine, rosemary, cedar - to your taste. Place an open jar near the battery, heating will increase the volatility of the essential components. Changing cotton wool is enough once a week.
  • You can drip the oil of your choice onto a toilet paper roll for a similar effect.
  • Drop 15 drops of essential oil into a container, add half a glass of vinegar and one and a half glasses of water, mix. Pour the resulting mixture into a jar with a screw cap, in which several holes have been made, and put it to the battery. You can do the same with baking soda.
  • For suspension, mix 70 g of starch with 25 g of salt and 100 ml of water in a bowl. Put on low heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mass thickens. Remove from heat, cool for a minute, then add 15 ml of vinegar and 5 drops of essential oil. For an extra cleanliness effect, you can add soap shavings dissolved in water. Knead the resulting composition well with your hands, form a ball and leave it to harden at room temperature for 10 hours. From a piece of wire, make a hook on which the ball will be planted. Bend the other end so that the suspension can be hung in the toilet, it will last for 2-3 weeks.

Do-it-yourself toilet fresheners can be made using other available means:

  • For a gel freshener, in one bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of gelatin with water, in another - 2 tablespoons of soda and salt, food coloring. When the gelatin swells, mix it with a glass of water and a colored mixture, add 2 tablespoons of vinegar and 20 drops of essential oil. Put the "jelly" in the refrigerator until it hardens, then cut it into pieces that fit into the toilet block.
  • Another option is to heat 250 ml of water, add 15 g of gelatin and 10 ml of glycerin, stir thoroughly. Then add a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon and a few drops of essential oil to the mixture. Pour the resulting gel into a container with a wide mouth and leave in the toilet.
  • Take a tube of toothpaste with a bright mint scent, pierce it several times with a thick needle, and place it in the toilet cistern. The fresh scent is provided for a long time.

Now you know what to do to keep the washroom clean and smell good. It remains to choose the most convenient option.
