Bicycles "Tourist": history, characteristics and subtleties of choice

This bicycle model is so relevant that it is even currently produced at the Kharkov Bicycle Plant. Of course, the modern version is different from its predecessor, but it's still the same Tourist bike.

KhVZ named after G.I.Petrovsky was founded in 1923. The first "Tourist" rolled off the assembly line in 1949, and it was produced until 1961. During this stage of production, three modifications of the product were created, namely: B-31, B-32 and B-33.

Bike series B-31 was a 1-speed product with a freewheel mechanism. But since it had only one speed, its production was stopped, and since the release was then produced in small batches, then this model can no longer be found in someone else's use.

Model construction B-32 similar to the B-31, but it had a peculiarity. The product had 3 speeds that could be switched while driving. During the production period, the vehicle remained almost unchanged, however, by the end of production, some changes were still made. We replaced the original derailleur with a telescopic one, and also changed the design of the fork.

For a vehicle B-33 chrome steel was used and replaced aluminum. The bushings have changed and become, like all tourist models that were produced at KhVZ. The emblem has been modified in the product design. It was the B-33 that became the founder of the classical concept of the design of tourist vehicles.

Since 1961, the name of the bicycle has changed, and instead of "Tourist", it became known as "Sputnik". Such changes were associated with advances in space. The first version under this name was model B-34which has been slightly modernized. The steering wheel was made of aluminum, and the comb was removed from the wings. Further, in all subsequent models, only the appearance changed, and also some parts were made from other materials. The transformation of the transmission can be considered a significant difference, since one more speed has been added.

The vehicle geometry was retained up to B-301, and for this model, the feathers have been changed, their length has become shorter.

The original name of the line returned in 1977, but the new bike model was similar in everything except design to the model "Sport 542-01". Sputnik, on the other hand, became a separate line, and its release continued until 1983.

The new vehicle model appeared in 1980 and was produced for 7 years. Then it was decided to change the design, but not change the design of the bike. The 153-421 was not particularly successful as the quality of the metal was not very good, which was reflected in the frame.

In the USSR, the last released bicycle "Tourist" of the old version was numbered 153-452, and had the following changes:

• the braking system has become aluminum;
• the trunk mount has changed.

However, the version had significant drawbacks, since the quality was not up to par, and almost all the connections of the product could be attributed to defective ones.

Compared to conventional road products, this one had a lightweight design for faster movement. However, after some time, KhVZ resumed production of this model, since it was very popular, but in a more modern form.

The first 3 models of the "Tourist" vehicle were similar in technical parameters.

The approximate weight was 14 kg, the transport had 3 gears, the last model had 4 gears. The pedals were lightweight, cast. You could choose between a hard or soft seat. Chrome-plated steel was used as the material for the manufacture, so these bicycles were considered reliable and unpretentious in maintenance.

The bicycles had a wheel size of 622 mm and a diameter of 28 inches. A distinctive feature of touring bicycles compared to road bicycles was their increased wheelbase. The wheel width is 25 mm, due to this, friction is reduced and the applied physical load when traveling is minimized. The tires themselves have become more reliable, which made it possible to cross uneven roads on such bicycles and take walks in the forests.

The vehicle frame height varies from 540 to 600 mm, in 20 mm increments.

The set included a bell, wheel lights and a pump. At the enterprise itself, a trunk was installed, and there was also a frame bag on the frame, which contained the tools. Some models had a flashlight with an electric generator as a bonus.

The rear sprockets of the bicycle had from 16 to 24 teeth, the front sprocket had 51 teeth. Both rear and hand brakes were present.
