Why are tulips given on March 8?
A few days before March 8, the question of what flowers and how many of them need to be purchased as a gift for loved ones and close women is extremely acute, and you also need to congratulate your colleagues at work. Let's figure out what are the norms of modern etiquette and floristry rules in this regard.
Why tulips?
For most ordinary people, these modest plants are associated with a spring drop, and their delicate smell is difficult to confuse with the smells of other flowers. A bouquet of quivering tulips after a long winter is able to convey the feeling of spring awakening, quickly and for a long time will cheer you up. Why is it customary to give flowers like tulips on March 8?
You can find many legends that can explain this fact. According to one of them, scarlet tulips appeared at the place of the death of a young boy. He adored his beloved so much that when he was told that she was dead, in despair he jumped from a high cliff onto stones. And then at the place of the guy's death, scarlet tulips appeared.
In England, children are taught that tulips are cozy beds for flower fairies.
And according to the Kazakh legend, it was from the bright yellow tulip bud that true happiness was born.
In Central Asia, they say that a blue tulip blooms high in the mountains once a year, which can be seen only in early spring. And the one who is lucky to pick this beautiful flower will be accompanied by happiness and good luck throughout his life.
At the same time, it is worth remembering that, in reality, not everyone considers March 8 a holiday of beauty, tenderness, femininity. For a long time, this holiday was dedicated to the ideas of gender equality. After all, 150 years ago, women did not have the right to vote in elections, could not receive an inheritance, they were often denied custody of their own children upon divorce. And they could get a divorce itself only in exceptional cases, and they were rarely given the opportunity to marry for true love.
But, as the story goes, in the 20th century, women began to actively fight for their rights - and today they enjoy almost all the privileges that modern men do.
The very idea of International Women's Day first appeared at the beginning of the 20th century.when the famous suffragette movement advocated for women's rights. It was Clara Zetkin who suggested starting to celebrate Women's Day on March 8th. The holiday has become a symbol of the victory of women in the struggle for their rights.
Now this day is celebrated in many post-Soviet republics, in some of them it is a significant event and weekend. In the Western world, March 8 is celebrated in those countries that are part of the UN. This day is another reason to remind the whole world of the achievements that modern women have achieved, and that in a number of countries women still face violence, their rights are violated and their status is lower than that of men. And since the tulip is considered a symbol of prosperity, harmony and growth, in addition, it is marked by early flowering and unpretentiousness, it is not surprising that it is considered to be its main attribute on March 8th.

How much can you give?
March 8 is the best holiday to present flowers to a pretty colleague or a girl you like. It is better for colleagues to choose a bouquet of 5, 7, 9, maximum of 15 buds. For women at work, it is not the size of the bouquet that is important, but the attention, therefore, small neat bouquets of 5-7 tulips are enough. And 9 or 15 flowers are more suitable for a gift to a woman leader.
It is better for your girlfriend to present a bouquet of 7 or more tulips. An armful of peony flowers saturated in color, a whole decorative basket or a large box with them will amaze your darling. It is best to attach a small toy and a greeting card to the bouquet. The most popular song sizes for loved ones are 51 or 101 tulips.
Mother and grandmother, and sometimes even my own aunt, are usually considered to be loved and close women. Close female relatives should be presented with a lush bouquet of unblown tulips so that they stand longer. It is best to choose monochromatic bouquets: white, orange, pink or rich yellow plant tones are perfect for these purposes. You can also buy tulips with arrows or fringed buds - they look very elegant. Mom, grandmother, aunt will be very happy with the gift and attention.
The tradition of giving bouquets of an odd number of buds for the holidays comes from the beliefs of the ancient Slavs, where parity usually meant the end of the life cycle, but odd numbers were considered amulets from evil.
At the same time, modern florists claim that this rule only works when there are less than 12 buds in the composition. If there are more than 12 colors, superstition can be disregarded. It is no coincidence that the artist from the well-known song gave his beloved a million scarlet roses - an even number of flowers. The author of the hit clearly knew all the intricacies of floristry.
