Species overview
A pencil bookmark is a simple and interesting craft that absolutely everyone can do, regardless of the development of creativity, experience and age. You can find the simplest possible master class for preschoolers or give preference to a complex option that requires an investment of time and effort. The product in the shape of a pencil goes well with school textbooks and your favorite literary works in voluminous volumes.
Different types of such bookmarks are classified, usually according to the technique of needlework or the material of manufacture. There are several options for decorative "pencils".
- Origami. The classic version that allows you to fold the product without the use of glue or other materials, exclusively from a sheet of one-sided colored paper. This is a fairly simple solution, allowing you to use both square and rectangular blanks.
- Applique made of cardboard or colored paper. Such a "pencil" can be decorated with the name of the school subject or other decorative elements.
- Knitted. Interesting and original "road" bookmarks that are not afraid of creasing or other mechanical influences.
- In the scrapbooking technique. They are suitable for books "with history", beloved and precious volumes, will be a wonderful unique gift for lovers of reading.
The pencil shape is quite popular among craftsmen who work in various handicraft techniques. It is not surprising that you can also find a lot of master classes for making such bookmarks.
How to do it yourself?
Even the simplest craft must be made carefully, according to the instructions. Most often, together with the children, they make pencil bookmarks using the origami technique. A detailed diagram will help you step by step through all the actions, even for preschoolers. It is enough to prepare thick glossy colored paper (it is stronger, does not tear) with one painted side and cut out a rectangular blank 80 × 200 mm in size from it.
The folding order of the origami craft will help you complete the task.
- Turn the workpiece over with the white side towards the master.
- Fold back a narrow colored strip along the top edge. 5-10 mm is enough.
- From about the middle to the top, the paper strip is folded in half along its length, barely marking a line in the center.
- Turn the workpiece over with the colored side. Bend the corners inward so as to form a pointed tip with a top, from which a colored strip extends.
- Re-hem. This stage is needed to further sharpen the tip of the "pencil", to narrow and lengthen it.
- Turn the workpiece over. Bend the remaining straight part of the strip up. Clearly highlight the fold line by ironing it.
- Flip the future "pencil". Fold a strip of paper towards the center on each of the 2 sides. Store in "pocket" to prevent accidental unfolding. If it does not hold tightly, you can glue it.
The product is ready. You can use it for its intended purpose, investing in textbooks, books, marking a line while reading.
Master class on creating a knitted bookmark
For those who know how to knit at least basic loops and crochet posts, the ability to knit a pencil bookmark in stages may also seem interesting. To create a product measuring 250 × 50 mm, you will need a skein of 50 g of thick cotton yarn of the base color (it will take about 1/4), as well as a small amount of beige and darker than the base, threads. For example, dark blue is added to blue, and burgundy to red. Knitting is carried out using the hook number 2.
Let's consider the order of work.
- Cast on 50 stitches in a chain with basic color threads.
- Knit 9 rows with single crochet. In a row of them there will be 49 + 1 air.
- Row 10 is knitted with single crochets. After 49, the thread is cut off. Tie in contrasting yarn.
- Tie parallel lines. They are formed with a chain stitch in 2 rows, through an air loop. The thread is taken out for work, then pulled through it, knitted.
- Without changing the color, go to the design of the edging. It is performed along the perimeter of the craft, on 3 sides. In the corners, 3 single crochets are knitted in 1 loop. The thread is cut off, beige is tied.
- The edge remaining without edging is tied. You should have 12 single crochets and 1 chain stitch.
- Then, step by step, over 5 rows, knitting is performed with a decrease in the penultimate step. An air loop is knitted last.
- On the 6th row, 6 columns are knitted. The thread changes to the base color. An air loop is tied.
- Further, knitting is carried out with a decrease. Until there are no loops on the 12th row. The thread is fixed, broken.
All that remains is to iron and steam the resulting bookmark. Such a knitted pencil does not harm the book endpaper, is convenient to use, and takes up little space on trips and travels.
Original pencil bookmark with appliqués
If a simple origami pencil-bookmark scheme does not require the use of a large amount of materials, then when working in the applique technique, you will have to spend a little more time preparing. In order for the craft to turn out beautiful and neat, you will have to use a ruler and pencil, glue (PVA or stick), scissors, colored cardboard and paper.
Let's consider step by step the procedure.
- Drawing a template. It is built on paper, similar to the sample. It is important that the workpiece is beautiful and neat. It consists of 2 parts, united by a fold, opens by analogy with a book.
- The workpiece is cut from the sheet. Bends. The tip and an uneven "wood" cut are outlined, as when turning a real pencil. These parts are cut off.
- The lower part of the template - the "body" of the pencil - is drawn on the cardboard. Divided into 2 elements with a slight reduction in length - so that when glued between the parts, a white strip remains. You can use several overlays - for example, bright over neutral, gold, silver.
- The "nose" is also drawn from cardboard. Glued onto the workpiece.
The drop-down pencil bookmark is ready. Inside, you can stick a lined note sheet or put pleasant wishes if the product is being prepared as a gift for a reading lover.
