Features of red gold
Gold is a noble and expensive metal, from which a variety of jewelry is especially appreciated. Perhaps one of the external criteria by which people distinguish gold is its color. After all, the metal can be white, and pink, and yellow, and red.
Red metal is one of the most sought-after and recognizable all over the world., from it eminent jewelers make all kinds of expensive jewelry for women and men. In this article, we will talk in more detail about the red gold alloy, its advantages and disadvantages, and also consider how the alloy differs from other metals.
What it is?
The red color of gold, however, like yellow, is one of the most widespread and demanded. A red tint is obtained if copper is added to pure gold in a certain amount. As a result, a so-called ligature is created, in simple language called "alloy".
As is known, jewelry is not made of pure gold... Because it is very fragile, it is customary to mix in a certain amount of another metal, in this case copper, to obtain an alloy of a certain sample. The sample depends on the amount of impurities in the gold. The composition itself may contain other additives that do not change color, but affect the quality of the future metal.
The addition of third-party metals does not mean that the item will be cheaper or less valuable.
On the contrary, with the help of the ligature, the product will be more wear-resistant and beautiful in appearance.
Red gold can be of the following samples (in the metric system):
- 375;
- 583;
- 585;
- 750.
So, for example, the proportion of pure gold in 585 standard is 58.5%, everything else is accounted for by third-party impurities. In red gold, copper is an impurity.But in the 375 sample of gold, only about 40%. In 750 standard pure precious metal is about 75%.
If the precious metal is 75%, then copper accounts for about 21%, and also often 4-5% silver is added to the alloy. If red gold is 333 samples, then it contains more copper than gold, that is, 57.5%, silver in such a ligature usually accounts for about 10%, but gold itself, as is clear from the sample, is only 33%. Jewelry of this sample is most accessible to a wide range of buyers.
585 standard red gold is today one of the most popular in jewelry stores in our country.
Products with this fineness have excellent value for money.
As for the prices for the red metal, they can depend on several factors:
- samples;
- inserts of precious and semi-precious stones;
- product weight;
- manufacturer and brand.
On average, 585 standard red gold costs between 1200-1500 rubles per gram. Much depends on the place of purchase and sale, as well as on the region of the country.
Advantages and disadvantages
The brighter the red shade of the metal, the more copper it contains and, accordingly, the lower its fineness. The following factors can be attributed to the advantages of red gold.
- Wide demand... Many famous jewelry houses work with red gold. You can find products made of beautiful metal at Tiffany, Cartier, Piaget, Graff and Bvlgary. Also, metal is often used to create expensive accessories, such as watches.
- Wear resistance, strength, durability.
- The nobility of metal, which does not darken over time, unlike, for example, the same silver.
- No so-called expiration date... Many metal jewelry has become a family property for several generations.
Red metal jewelry will suit people of any age... They can emphasize their refined taste, solidity and elegance. Red gold jewelry is a safe bet for older ladies, as jewelry will highlight their status.
The disadvantages, of course, include the high prices for red metal jewelry. But it should be understood that the main price for a gold piece is not formed because of its color, but depends, as a rule, on the original design and work of the master.
For example, rings that are different in design, but of the same weight, can cost with a difference of several hundred thousand rubles, since a lot depends on the popularity of the brand.
What is the difference?
Red, white, pink and yellow gold differ from each other not only in color, but also in composition. It is impossible to say which color is better, because each person suits his own version not only for personal preferences, but also for other factors, for example, skin color (if it concerns the choice of jewelry).
Red and pink shades are obtained if a large amount of copper is present in the ligature. Nickel is often added to rose gold for a subtle hue. But to create a white tint of gold, silver, nickel, platinum or palladium are added to the ligature.
As for the yellow gold familiar to everyone (this shade is its natural color), several metals are often added to the alloy at once, including silver, zinc, copper and nickel.
But the total amount of impurities is usually small, due to which it turns out to preserve the original color of the natural precious metal.
How to choose?
Red metal jewelry is great for everyday life, but that doesn't mean it can't be chosen for party, prom and wedding. They look moderate, discreet and neat. Earrings are winning out of them, especially with small precious stones.
White gold is most often combined with dark stones and pearls; it is important to wear such jewelry for a special occasion. White gold is considered one of the most expensive metals, and therefore jewelry with it can cost more than usual.
Wedding rings and any "magnificent" jewelry for special celebrations are often purchased from yellow metal.Yellow gold is prized mainly in Europe, where it is often chosen by monarchs, but red is especially loved in Russia since tsarist times.
It is extremely important to select gold jewelry from reputable licensed jewelry stores. Authentic products will definitely have a brand and a test. On modern products that are branded, a lady in a kokoshnik should be clearly visible, looking to the right. Foreign gold is branded in carats, the letter K is visible on the product. Carat is a unit of measurement not only for precious stones, but also for gold.
So, for example, 585 gold fineness corresponds to 14 carats.
How to care?
It is advisable to store any jewelry in the place designated for them. A safe or box is best. If other metals or jewelry from other alloys are stored next to gold, it is better to isolate gold by hiding jewelry in bags or paper.
Gold items can fade over time, especially if worn very often. To fix this, you can purchase a special cleaner for gold jewelry or use the tools at hand.
- To gently cleanse the dirt, it is recommended to take 3-4 tbsp. l. salt and stir them in a glass of warm water. Place the decorations in a glass, soak them in the solution for several hours. After that, the gold should be rinsed under running water and dried well.
- One of the popular and safe cleaning recipes is to use a toothbrush (soft) and a small amount of toothpaste.... Jewelry should be well rubbed and cleaned from dirt, then rinsed in clean water and dried on a towel.
- The jewelry is also cleaned with the well-known hydrogen peroxide, which is sold in any pharmacy. A small amount of peroxide (about 40-50 ml) should be poured into a container and a glass of water should be added there, and then put in the resulting decoration solution for 15-20 minutes. After a while, take out the gold, rinse and dry.
These recipes for cleansing jewelry at home are suitable for accessories without stones. Depending on the type of stone, it must be washed following special instructions, otherwise it may change its color. But usually ordinary cubic zirconia from rare cleaning with toothpaste nothing happens. On the contrary, they begin to shine even brighter.
