Good oral hygiene is not limited to regular toothbrushing in the morning and evening. It is necessary to supplement the care procedure with the use of dental rinses. But even this approach does not guarantee complete cleaning of all contact surfaces of the teeth and interdental spaces. It is there that plaque is always collected, which decomposes over time and becomes the cause of the development of caries and periodontitis. The prevention of such problems can be the use of dental floss - flosser.

Characteristic

Each tooth has five surfaces. The brush is capable of high-quality cleaning of the front, chewing and lingual parts. Floss should be used to clean the remaining contact flanks. It better removes plaque deposited at the gum line, thereby preventing the development of gingivitis and inflammation of the periodontal tissues.

A peculiar mix of a toothpick with a thread, made in the form of a slingshot, is called a flosser. With the help of a stretched thread, it is convenient to get to hard-to-reach places for effective cleaning. Such a product is much more convenient to use than a regular floss thread: you do not need to make long manipulations with the thread, unwind and wind it on your fingers, opening the jaw wide for greater access to the distant teeth.

Dental floss on a stick is convenient for cleaning teeth, but not without drawbacks - it is not always possible to press floss in a toothpick tightly to the surface of the tooth, as is done when manipulating the "manual" floss from the box.

There are several types of yarn with a holder. There are also specialized threads for cleaning dentures and orthodontic plates.This suture has a wide fibrous end on one side, which makes it possible to efficiently process the surface of the prostheses. At the other end, the thread is impregnated with a wax base and sharpened, which allows it to be used in narrow, hard-to-reach places. Those who wear braces just need threads of this kind. It is difficult to fully clean such a surface with a standard brush.

For patients who first decided to use such a device, it is advisable to start cleaning with a more gentle version of floss with a waxed flat thread. For greater efficiency, the dental floss on the slingshot can be impregnated with various compounds. For disinfection, chlorhexidine is usually used as an impregnation, coping with pathogenic flora in the oral cavity. And if you need to strengthen the tooth enamel, threads soaked in sodium fluoride solution will come in handy. There are also common hygienic formulations for improving bad breath.

Flosser effectively and safely cleans the interdental space only if it is correctly selected. If, when buying a toothpick with a floss, the peculiarities of the location of the teeth in the dentition are not taken into account, there is a possibility of injury to the gums. In addition, there are a number of contraindications to the use of such dental machines:

  • pulpitis;
  • the presence of carious cavities;
  • periodontal disease;
  • bleeding gums.

Before buying such a product, you need to consult a dentist to determine the features of the bite, the shape and condition of the teeth. If the floss is used incorrectly or insufficiently, unwanted complications can appear.

Views

Dental floss are of different types and differ in the shape of the section.

  • Round. The cross section is made in the form of a circle. Visually, this option is similar to an ordinary thread, only of a much smaller diameter. Indicated for patients with large interdental spaces. For the same purposes, tape floss is recommended. Bulk dental floss are similar to round ones, but they differ in the ability to slightly increase in size in a humid environment, upon contact with saliva in the oral cavity. Such flosses are recommended for periodontal diseases, gum recession, exposure of the necks and roots of the teeth.
  • Flat. It is used when the teeth are tightly packed (crowding). The flat cross-section thread is able to penetrate between densely spaced teeth for effective cleaning.

Also flossers are subdivided according to the quality of processing.

  • Waxed. Smoother, with adherent fibers. They are additionally treated with wax, a thin layer of which provides easy sliding and penetration into the most inaccessible places. But this type has the disadvantage of relatively low strength. In addition, the low friction force does not allow to completely clean the interdental space with such flossies. Dentists recommend using them for those who have many teeth with fillings, and the teeth are tightly pressed together.
  • Unwaxed. They have a fibrous structure for effective plaque removal. In the process of brushing, the surface delaminates into individual fibers, which contributes to the treatment of a larger area of the tooth surface.

Various materials are used to make dental floss. Reusable dental machines are made from plastic... This material is ideally suited for this purpose, as it is lightweight and easy to clean. Plastic toothpicks come in one and two strands, suitable for children or adults, for cleaning braces and treating implants, etc.

Dental floss can also be matched by type.

  • Silk. Silk is a natural material. It produces strong and thin toothpicks, some of the most popular.
  • Nylon. Synthetic nylon is as good as silk. Such flossers are more affordable and common.
  • Teflon. High quality Teflon has a sliding surface and is able to penetrate into the most difficult to reach places.
  • Nylon. A durable synthetic polyamide fiber that is not suitable for everyone.

Choice

Which flosser would be more suitable? There is no definite answer to this question, since the choice of dental floss on sale is quite wide. Each species has certain advantages and disadvantages. When buying a toothpick with a handle, it is important to follow the dentist's recommendations and consider your own needs.

When deciding on a suitable machine for cleaning the interdental space, you need to take into account your dental characteristics in relation to the thickness of the thread:

  • flat tape floss is suitable for wide gaps between teeth;
  • it is better to clean narrow interdental spaces with waxed types of floss, which glide easier in confined spaces;
  • for travel, it is more comfortable to use disposable flossers or threads, packaged in portions.

The dental floss on the handle is suitable for business travel and resort use, comfortable at home.

They are suitable for the elderly and anyone who finds it problematic to use yarn from a skein in a standard container. Flossers on the handle are ideal for those who do not have the opportunity to purchase an electric toothpick with floss. And let all the manipulations have to be performed independently, but it is affordable, hygienic and convenient.

Flossers are available with a flexible holder, long and short handles, simple shapes and in the form of animal figures, especially for children. With complicated dental care, in the presence of orthodontic structures and bridges, the use of superfloss is shown - a special type of floss toothpick with areas of different structures.

Application rules

Flosser with a thread as a toothpick on a plastic holder is easy to use for its intended purpose. Even a child can cope with this task.

  • The handle is held in one hand.
  • Movements in different directions are made without effort and pressure. The machine is driven up and down in a zigzag manner according to the same principle as when using floss with your own fingers.
  • The thread is not pressed between the teeth so as not to injure the gums, the cleaning machine moves from and along the gums.

Dentists differ on how best to floss - before or after brushing with a toothbrush. Some experts believe that first you need to remove the main plaque with a brush, and then remove the rest with a thread. Others are sure that it is correct to do the opposite, otherwise it is possible to remove the fluorides remaining on the surface of the teeth after processing with toothpaste - they provide the prevention of caries. According to recent studies, the second option is more effective. At the same time, dental associations recommend acting on the basis of their own preferences, since it is better, in principle, to use a thread than not to use it at all.

If the hand flossing machine is used correctly, daily oral hygiene will be much more effective, which will have a positive effect on the health of the teeth. Plus, this approach will provide fresher breath and an open smile.
